Re: Header rattle?

Bob Lombardi

I once had a rattle on a Yamaha SR500 that I thought was coming from a cam chain.?? It turned out to be the inner pipe of the header pipe.
I drilled some holes in the outer pipe and plug welded the noisy inner pipe to the outer pipe in a few places.
That did the trick.

Ok....so...one cap nut on left header required tightening! Ha. Little loose fasteners can create a racket? and for those not in the know, a serious loud noise can mimic excessive valve train noise and cause panic?
So ..did all the test starts in the garage hoping for the sound to reverberate, def quieter than the other day! Nothing at idle but over 4k rpm in the garage? You're gonna get noise. Perhaps a loose inner damper or something in header? Just speculation.

Sounds better than before, no muffler baffles appear loose or dislodged so might call it a day. Will report tomorrow after am ride.?
