I've got the bike back on the road but my helmet isn't very comfortable. Turns out it's not just that I have less hair, the padding is turning back into petroleum. While pulling out scraps of foam I notice the production date: 2007! The impact foam deteriorates over time so ideally a helmet should be replaced about every five years. Sixteen years is a little bit past the sell by date. Of course, in the interim they've changed how the visors are attached, so my old ones are all useless. But the cost of a new helmet is still less than my health insurance company's deductible for treating a traumatic brain injury.?
