Re: SOTAwatch Alerts
开云体育Hi Steve!I don't think you are doing anything wrong. Since "Alerts" seem to be working FB right now, I'd guess that you caught the software at a moment with "it's pants down". Alan On 12/22/2024 1:58 PM, Steve N2IC via

SOTAwatch Alerts
I'm looking at doing my first SOTA in a long time, tomorrow. I logged into the SOTAwatch website, and spots look fine, and are updating. When I went to "Alerts", I expected to see many postings for activations over the next few days. Instead, all I see are 4 alerts - 3 from VK1MCW, and 1 from XE2GRC. What am I doing wrong ?

'tis the season
开云体育Ice cleats aren’t suitable for trail running.? They are heavy, unstable, expensive, and annoying to put on and off when the trail changes from snow to open ground.? Here is a Runner’s solution which some may find applicable to winter or spring SOTA activations. ? Cheap, take only a few minutes to install, do not hurt the shoe, that is, you can take them out again with impunity, they run over rocks, ground, then snow and ice, no problem, no need to change out of them on the trail… sheet metal screws. ??The cushioning in running shoes is most always very thick, not in racing shoes perhaps, but that isn’t the shoe one selects for trail running in the snow, and perhaps surprisingly, I have never “felt” a poke from one of these screws.? ?I do avoid putting them directly under pressure points like the ball of the foot or center of the heel. ? Those in the photo below are permanently installed in older trail running shoes which get put into service when conditions call for it.? Every now and then a screw comes out, doesn’t noticeable degrade performance, easily replaced before the next outing. ? FD kt5x

Trip report: Cerro Grande
W5N/SE-011, Cerro Grande remains an easy hike due to the dry weather. The showed patchy snow on the ground so I came prepared with cleats. There was not enough ice or snow to bother with them though. The final 100' ascent has about 8" of windblown snow. Operated for about an hour at the summit on 30 meters and 20 meters. No significant DX but a ton of first-time chasers for me. NOAA’s long term forecast for January is supposed to continue the warm and dry trend. 73, CN |

After Action Colorado Peak
开云体育Great summit to close out the year on. Don and I headed out from his QTH around 0730 en-route to trail head parking. I have never parked here before (see GPX Drive) , but Don proceeded to follow some tracks I laid out. Found a nice, almost level spot to park,? from where we started our hike up the ridge. (see GPX Hike) Turns out, there is a nice cow trail which lead us right to the top. ( .2 mile hike) We then proceeded to hike along the rim to the summit. (.2 mile hike) for a total hike of .4 mile. Nice easy hike with views from the rim. Highly recommend this summit. It has lots of room on top with some trees for mast support. 73 all enjoy the pics? Geo WB5USB

geology of Valles Calderas
开云体育Maybe too much time on my hands here… ? Came across this which may be of interest as most of us here have activated peaks in the Valles.? The first Caldera forming eruption, the Toledo event, John, Tom and I have activated Toledo, was 1.6 million years ago.? The most recent eruption in the Valles is 40,000 years ago ?

FW: video of ascent of santa clara
开云体育Video by another hiker, not me, of the peak Tom and I intend to ascend Wednesday.? Look for us around 1800z - fd ?
? I go up following the light colored diagonal, in this photo, from lower right to upper middle arriving in the slight low spot in the middle of the peak.? Approach is grassy, not loose, at least it wasn’t when I went up ten years ago: ? ? The video guy went up from the north, the yellow route in ONXhunt map below, rather than my green route.? It works, but first a steep loose talus, then bouldering to the ridge. ? |

Action Plan W5N SE 050
开云体育We will depart my QTH around 0800 in-route to W5N/SE-050 Colorado Peak.QRV should be by 1800. Nice summit with lots of room to spread out along the rim of the crater. From where we plan on parking its a .25 mile hike to the activation zone then another .25 mile to the exact summit. Fairly easy hike up the sloping ridge line. see pics? 73 all WB5USB Geo 4WD and high clearance a plus W5N SE 050 Colorado Peak.pdf

Re: After Action W5N SE 044
Oof. Yeah, that did happen, I'm sorry George. I've been using two keyers lately (long story) and forget to put them at the same speed. I've only done Tetilla once but I remember the view down into the valley was kind of special. Gave me a new appreciation for La Bajada. :-) 73, CN On Sat, Dec 14, 2024, at 4:21 PM, George Yoakum via groups.io wrote:

After Action W5N SE 044
开云体育Weather was nice as Don and I headed out from his QTH around 0730.All roads in good shape except the last mile. Must have high clearance and low range nice. Once parked the hike up the side to the summit was rocky and steep, but thankfully only .4 mile. ? see pics. Arrived at the summit by 1000 local. Total travel and hike 2 hrs 30 min. Great views from the top but real estate is at a premium, at the top. Not a lot of room for multiple ops. Maybe three stations? Only took my tuned vertical so it was 14 MHz and 10 MHz. It was a first for me when , I think, N5XR call in at about 30 wpm. Managed to snag a couple of letters before he repeated at slower speed. Got to love fast code....gives me practice. 73 all enjoy the pics? WB5USB Geo |

Proposed Activation
开云体育On Saturday, December 14, 2024, we plan on activating W5N/SE-044 (Tetilla Peak) just west and a little south of Santa Fe. (see GPX track drive) We will depart my QTH at 0800.Last Saturday we activated Caja del Rio Plateau and found it snow free so Tetilla peak will be snow free also. (see pics from last trip) From where we plan on parking its a .4 mile steep hike up to the summit. QRV should be around 1800 UTC. (see GPX file hike) The summit is not very large, but it does have a couple of nice spots to set up ops. (see pics) I have included pics from both summits. Enjoy 73 WB5USB Geo

From parking its a .2 mile hike along the ridge to the summit. see GPX files Drive and Hike Weather will be sunny with light winds and temps in he 50's. There are a couple of places on the final drive that a high clearance vehicle would be a plus and a few rocky climbs, not for the family sedan. On top there are lots of nice trees and open areas to set up ops. see previous pics?? QRV around 1800 UTC? 73 WB5USB Geo ![]()

After Action W7A AE 022
开云体育Good roads all the way to the summit, however, the last .5 mile or so to the summit is steep with a couple of places with larger rocks, nothing that the Bronco could not handle. It will require that you vehicle is capable of handling steep roads. 4L was very handy. I was surprised to see some nice pine trees at the top. Don set up right on the summit wile I set up down the slope a few yards. see pics for fun? Made some excellent contacts. Views from the top are excellent. This is state trust land, see pic, so I placed our pass on the dash as requested. Very easy to go on line to get a pass and print it out. 73 all enjoy the pics and GPX track? WB5USB George

开云体育Action Plan: W7A/AE-022? Antelope Mountain? Saturday November 30, 2024Depart my QTH by 0800 or earlier ,if possible, in route to Antelope Mountain. From Eagar Arizona we will travel west to 34.079463, -109.454210, where will will take the short drive up to the summit. QRV should be around 1900 to 1930 if we have no problems. I have never been here so I will run a GPX track and take pictures. To be on the safe side I purchased a day pass for our group from the public lands people in Arizona. Turns out you can have a group up to 11 people for a reasonable fee of $15. As always anyone wishing to join us is welcome as I have up to 11 people covered.?? 73 all WB5USB? Geo ? |
