Re: Johnson Mesa Access

Thank you Mike,
?
After we finished on Hermit Peak this afternoon, I drove up Johnson Mesa. I parked a little low and hiked 10 minutes to the summit. I only logged 6 contacts when I heard thunder and decided to make the activation a very short one.

Mark, et al,

I failed to report that Johnson Mesa is open. All he gates are open and access to the summit is unimpeded. The views re very different given the damage done by the Hermit Fire, but from a SOTA perspective, access is like it always has been.

I am open to other summits that are not in or near a burn area. I'd like to keep the travel under two hours from Wagon Mound, as I'd like to be back there in the evening. The completes I was thinking about are not that important.

Hello Fred,

?

We are staying in Wagon Mound. Wagon Mound has their Bean Festival on Labor Day Weekend. We were there last April as my Wife's (KA0JKZ) mother had family there 60+ years ago. We met some extended family that is still in the area and will set up in their driveway.

?

<<< have heard about that celebration, have not attended but am certain it is a good time!

?

I plan to bring my Kawasaki KLR motorcycle in the back of the trailer to head out for the summits. My wife might try to convince me to take the truck though. She worries about me on the bike.

?

I would be happy to have company on these hikes. I will plan for the El Porvenir CG trailhead at 8am on Friday morning. Would earlier be better? Looks to be a bit over an hour from Wagon Mound.

?

<<<? theoretically, good.? But practically, not so sure:? likelihood of thunder storms is significant, and enhanced by the parking area is not much above creek level, a creek subject to flash flooding in the wake of the fire.

<<< let’s keep an eye on things… fred

Re: NM Trip on Labor Day Weekend

Hi Alan,
?
I have also been tied up with a wedding all of August. We were getting the back yard ready for a party after the wedding. After being together for seven years, Annette, KA0JKZ, and I were officially married on August 24th. Our trip this weekend cannot really be considered a honeymoon as we are also going with her mother, daughter, daughter's boyfriend, and my wife's best friend. So, I will go play radio. I have to be back in Wagon Mound Friday night for the festival.
?
I am hoping to go to Chimayo on Sunday. We like visiting the mission there.

Is anybody thinking about any other summits in this area this weekend?

Mark,

It would be fun to connect up for a summit or two but I'm getting family in town here in Santa Fe for a wedding and am completely tied up.

I haven't hiked Hermit recently, but the NF reports:
  • Hermits Peak Trail #223
This 9.5-mile trail was cleared to the peak in June 2024, but visitors should be cautious in burned areas and bring navigational tools.?Some say the trail can be covered with baseball-sized rocks that could cause injury.
It's a favorite of mine mostly do to the park-like top and the views. There is a spring near the top that I've never seen dry.

After Action

Weather was good as Don (KG5ISG), Tim (K5DEZ), Dale (AA7OY) and I (WB5USB) met up at trail head parking for the short hike up the ridge to the summit. We each chose a starting frequency then spread out on the summit to set up our ops. I did not get any QRM from any of the other stations. After operating for about an hour, we checked out the Grassy Overlook. see pics We did see some deer and of course Don was harassed by a Horned Lizard. see pics.?? It was a pleasure to have Dale join us. Lots of fun sharing ideas for SOTA.
Road up was in very good shape all the way to parking.? 73 all enjoy the pics WB5USB Geo

Bear BM PW-014

Bear BM has not been activated since the 350,000 acre Hermit Peak fire burned through the area.? We wondered what conditions are like.? The area is “open,” but the Skyline Trail is declared closed.

?

AD5A drove his Jeep with 35 inch tires, and transported K1JD and I (KT5X/WS0TA) to the parking place for Bear BM.? There were several severe washouts as a result of the fire.? The 35 inch tires were a must.? An off-road motorcycle probably can pick its way through to parking.

?

There is a culvert over a running stream which shows signs of flooding over the road, and the road is giving way.? I don’t know how long that piece of roadway may hold up, and when it goes, have no idea how long it might be before the underfunded forest service might be able to fix it.

?

The hike from parking to the true peak usually took less than an hour.? Today it took two hours.? The early part of the trail is not discernable, see photo below.? It helps to have been there before.? Most of the trees are down and aspen are growing up from roots thick as grass.? You have to wind your way, though since it isn’t a steep hike, it was easy albeit challenging to one’s patience.? I won’t complain about Scooter ever again.

?

There was no animal sign to speak off.
