W4ELP Lookup not liked by Norton AntiVirus - False Positive?
The W4ELP Lookup executable is consistently being deleted because of a threat identified as the Heur.AdvMLB virus. The virus is used to steal personal information. I suspect that this is a false-positive detection but wanted to run it by the group members. I searched the messages for "Heur.AdvMLB" but did not get any hits. Is it OK to exempt this file from the scan? Heur.AdvMLB is detected each time I execute the program.

POTA Watch v23.0 available
Hi Folks,
POTA Watch has been updated to v23.0 as of July 24, 2024. Download at -> Files -> Program Files.
New feature - Added ability to filter spots to only show specific countries and block all others. This will help reduce screen clutter, especially at times of the day when other parts of the world are more active.
Fixed several minor issues.
? ? ? Blank park locations were being highlighted in yellow.
? ? ? In Options screen, several checkboxes in Mode and Band selections were interacting incorrectly.
? ? ?Callsign lookups were not working correctly, especially with "Test" and "Manual Entry" buttons in Options screen.
?
As usual, please advise of any problems or questions.

NEW - POTA Watch v22.6
POTA Watch v22.6 is posted and available for download in the Files > Program Files section of this forum.
The only change is adding a Find/Search feature to the POTA Log Repair Utility app. It allows you to search the log file for any criteria such as callsign, park, band, etc. No change to the POTA Watch itself except updating the version number. 73, Ed - W4ELP |
New POTA Log 4.1 available
POTA Log 4.1 is posted and available for download. The logger itself is unchanged, although the version is updated to 4.1. The Park Finder has 2 new features:
1. Added ability to search on Grid Square for parks 2. Saving maximum search distance as default Go to this forum, Files > Program Files for the download. These were added at the suggestion of Buz, WA5AMM. Thanks for the great suggestions, Buz!?? I hope you find these programs and the new features to be helpful to your POTA activities. 73, Ed - W4ELP |
Re: ACLog and HRD
Karl,
I have been woring for four hours today to solve a simple token problem at work.? Things seem to be getting more complicated every day. One thing I should have made clearer in my first email is that I was talking about mutiple programs running simultaneously on the same computer or "local machine" and trying to exchange data with each other.? The method can be extended to communications between outside computers as well, but there are additional considerations in doing so. I find this port stuff interesting, and I hope you'll continue to learn about it.? It makes the interface much easier than it was when dinosaurs ruled the earth.? ? Good luck and best regards, Bob, N3BD |
Re: ACLog and HRD
Thanks Ed - I did not pose my question clearly.? The WSJT part is working fine as is.? It talks to AC log as it is currently set up and that is all I want.? The problem I was having was with HRD and ACLog together by themselves not communicating.? Since I asked the question I found your pdf that talks to that issue.? Have not had time to implement per those directions but I know it worked FB last time I used HRD and ACLog together so I assume all will be well.? My bad for pulling the trigger too quickly.
Bob - Many thanks to you as well.? Good info that is very, very well explained and I will be spending some time absorbing (and experimenting).? Good stuff to know and much appreciated.? Sometimes the basics are the hardest parts on which to get educated.? I have had lots of issues with com ports - TCP - UDP - API you name it.? Getting smarter step by step will be most helpful as I muddle up stuff in the future with different rigs and different software. TU to you both and 73 Karl K0CIE -- Karl Kaukis K0CIE |
Re: ACLog and HRD
The W4ELP Lookup program use ACLog's API on port 1100 to allow it to work with HRD Logbook or DM780. Essentially all operation is done in HRD and the log info is passed to AC Log is real time. Adding WSJT to the party is? whole 'nuther thing. I have not tried that, but I don't think it will work. Since WSJT-X provides all the info to the logging program, maybe both HRD Logbook and AC Log could receive and log the UDP data from WSJT-X.
I'll take a look at this and see if I can come up with something and will let you know. 73, Ed - W4ELP |
Re: ACLog and HRD
Karl,
?
ACL seems to talk to the outside world on port 1100 TCP and port 2237 UDP.? The TCP in my mind is like a private telephone line, where one app asks a question and the other app answers it, and then the port is quiet until the next conversation.? In the TCP API, both apps must be speaking to each other using the same :"language" which is very well documented on the ACL web site.? Port 2237 is like a party line where all the apps are looked to the main line, and when one app sends something, all other other apps hear it.? TCP is highly structured dataflow-wise, and UDP is just the opposite.
?
ACL has two available ports that I know of.? One is called the "TCP API Enabled (Server)" and it is set to 1100 TCP most of the time.? Things seem to get real undocumented from here, but I have been assuming the WSJT-X port in the ACL software is a UDP port, however, I have not been able to document this.? Nevertheless, when you check the "Listen for WSJT-X" checkbox, it acts like a UDP port..? If you press "Configure," you should make sure it is set to multicast IP address - 224.0.0.1 - and Port 2237.
?
So far, I have not seen too much use for ACL's TCP port.? I think all of the ACL sister contest software uses the port, and there is one HamRadioClock app that uses the port, but, outside that, I haven't learned about any other uses.? I am very sure there are some that I don't know about or use (yet).
?
So, the short version is, and I don't use HRD, you've got to see which port is configured inside HRD, and make sure that same port is configured in AC as well.? You have a 50-50 chance of picking the right one first, and I would try UDP first, but that's just a guess.
?
To make your arrangement "talk" and "listen," you've got to figure out which ports are being used, so start experimenting.? It took me about 15 hours to figure this arrangement well enough to get ACL, WSJT-X, JTAlert, GridTracker and SDR Console (by way of OmniRig, but not through 2237) to work in peaceful harmony.
?
Have fun, and if anybody has any corrections, additions, or clarifications, please join the thread and let me hear from you.
?
Best regards,
?

ACLog and HRD
Trying to use W4ELP to get ACLog (normal daily log) to talk to HRD Log (normal daily log).? ACLLog works fine with WSJTX .? Would be a convenience if it would coordinate with HRD Log as well.? I think at one point I had it working (did a RTTY contest out of DM780 and the ACLog contest log).? AC log does not see the HRD log data when it goes in the ALE window and I think I recollect that it should.? ?I am getting this error message but it seems trivial: |
New Version POTA Logger for activators
POTALog 4.0 is ready for download. Major change is in selecting and saving parks for activations. The POTALog program operation is mostly unchanged. Just some cleanup of the main window.
The logger now uses Park Finder 2.0 which is included in the installation. With Park Finder, you can find a list of parks within any specified distance of virtually any location such as city, address or park. Lists can be made and saved for future use which should be handy for anyone planning a road trip to activate different parks. You can also search for parks by park number or a partial name. If you had installed Park Finder 1.0, the new Park Finder will delete old files and convert any park list to the new format.? There could very well be some bugs or things I have missed, so please advise of any problems or questions. 73, Ed - W4ELP |

Hi Ed,
The anti-virus folks were back to me very quickly. Confirmed it was a false positive and your installer package was "whitelisted". Webroot has not had a false positive problem for me in over a year. The package hash value is in their system now This was first time I have tried this program and will have a bit of a learning curve figuring out what files I need for which purpose... looks like the online help file is a version behind, but probably very usable. Thanks, Jack - KD4IZ |
