January 9,2025 Meeting
2
Good evening, Just a reminder that our next meeting is 6:30 this Thursday at the Club. 1004 Montezuma Ave. Also, I just wanted to say what a great time had by all. we were working on the three types of antennas, we built a 6-meter portable, a 2-meter jpole from faraday cloth and a handheld 2-meter directional antenna from a tape measure. Special thanks to Thomas and Jimmie for their support. Bruno, will you be there to open up the building on Thursday? Thanks all 73 Alan KQ4ELM

2 Meter Simplex Test
5
We had a brief test of our 2 meter simplex capabilities today. Below are the results of the test. We need to improve the VHF capabilities a little bit. HF NVIS is a good solution, but I'd like to see our local VHF working a bit better. Even NVIS can bounce over someone this close. It might do us well to build 2 meter copper J-pole antennas. They only cost about $30 worth of copper, and half an hour of build time. They're rigid and work well. It would also do well to test 6 meters for direct VHF contact, which was the purpose of the 6 meter antenna build today. Jimmie and I will be testing this weekend once he has his strung up. We'll let you know the results. We have a few more 6 meter verticals in progress to test as well. Any other ideas to improve local communication are certainly welcome. KJ4IRF Thomas

ARES Information
5
ARES Members Please note that we agreed to cancel our meeting this month on December 12, 2024 and resume in January. Our antenna building workshop will be January 4, 2025 during the W4DHN workday. More info is on the Groups.io. The antenna building is open to anyone as long as you let us know you are coming so we can advise you what pieces/parts you will need to bring (or make arrangements to purchase) to help build the antenna you would like. The workshop begins at 9am at the American Red Cross Office, 1004 Montezuma Avenue in Dothan. Snacks and Coffee will be available;-) Also of note: Alan and I totally understand being busy and/or having too many irons in the fire. Our ARES club is not a mandatory show up each month or even Task Book progress each month. Yes, in a perfect world we would all love that, but with that said, if you don¡¯t enjoy learning about the ARES world or helping others/our community, then just tell us you are not interested BUT,¡ if you are interested, at least stay on the fringes and keep your ears and eyes open to the information and jump in when you can. It is always better to be at least somewhat familiar with a program than clueless when you want or need to jump in and help. We are in this for the long haul to become better HAM operators and to understand how we best can serve when disasters/tragedies happen. It is not a race, just a progression of becoming more informed and knowing who and where we need to contact/network when the chips are down. Teamwork is always the best work. I appreciate all of you! Happy Holidays, Barbara KM4RBE

ADPH Houston County Stations
3
I have done some digging into the ADPH-funded station at Flowers and have reached a dead end. The Director of Plant Operations at Flowers states that he looked around and could not find the radio equipment at all. I'm not certain where the equipment went. He stated that someone named Bill Woodham used to run the radio station and is now retired. I don't know who this person is. I don't see a Bill or William Woodham in the FCC ULS database in the state of Alabama. I know a Bert Woodham, who owns the cabinet shop down the road from me. I can contact him to see if Bill is of any relation, but it seems as if we have reached the end of the rope here. It might be an option to request another grant to rebuild the station, but I am not certain that we would not wind up in the same situation some years down the road. Perhaps we can think up alternative locations for another station. There is a very big upside to having a station at Flowers as it is one of the central points of emergency-related activity in the county, not to mention the height of the building. I don't know if the antennas are still in place there. I told him that I'd reach out again soon to visit and inspect it myself. Ken Hosey K4PDI stated that he would check the status of the local ADPH station to see if any equipment remains on site there. The last word we had on that station is the antennas were damaged during roof construction. The status of the radios is unknown until one of us finds out. Ken, has there been any update on this one? The Southeast Health station is in good working order, aside from the HF radio still being in the repair shop in Syracuse. I analyzed both of the HF antennas and have full SWR graphs of each band on each antenna printed and present at the station's control point. The VHF/UHF antennas, feedlines, and radio are all in great working order. I have been activating that station once per month during our nets. My next activation of that station is tomorrow night. Does anyone have any insight or updates for the remaining stations? KJ4IRF Thomas

Net control for W4DHN
8
Scott Drum has graciously offered to fill-in for me for the ARES net on December 31st, but I had offered to do both on New Year¡¯s Eve since typically we stay home but now I have an opportunity to reunite with a cousin I haven¡¯t known very well. So, is there anyone that does not have plans during the regular net on New Year¡¯s Eve at 8pm that would call it for me as well. I will switch with someone (even on Christmas Eve). Thanks in advance. Antenna Builds
6
All, Here are three choices of simple antenna builds. We can build one or all three or if you have another antenna you would like to build, we can add it to the list. I would like to be able to use the club's workshop on Saturday January 4th to do the build. This will allow us a month to pick which build you would like to complete and acquire the necessary parts. Please let me know which one you would like. See two Attached files plus, 6 Meters Antenna. 16.4ft RG58 - https://a.co/d/0gBYX3i 2x 10ft 3/4" Sch40 PVC pipe 1x 3/4" Sch40 Female Female joint 3/4" Sch40 end cap 50mm to 3/4" 3d printed form - I can print them at home Fishing line 1/4" drill bit Drill 6ft tomato stake or other way to hold the antenna vertical.
