Follow up to K1RI Equipment Tests

This AM I have tested the following and found them to be in operable condition.
Yaesu 2m FT-2500m
Yaesu 2m FT 2500m and Kantronics Communicator 3 plus (Packet control)
Kenwood TM 281A
These items are now at my home QTH.
Apparently the smoke had little on no effect on the gear.? That gives me hope none of the other equipment has been damaged.
I will attempt to assemble all the related items for the Elecraft K3? inclucing Amplifier, ATU, Directional coupler and speakers.

Then I looked at yhe QRPLabs QDX and QMX transceivers, but I still would need the laptop, tablet or cellphone. Then I ran across WB2CBA and W5BAA's DXFT8 QRP transceiver. This is a you have to build it from components and program it with firmware. So you order the RF board kit from Kees Talen K5BCQ via a paypal payment of $45.00, the STM32f746 Discovery Board from Digikey, a Micro SD card 8GB or larger, a CR2032 button cell for the real time clock, and a Mini USB cable for programming. Once everything arrived, I spent 2 hours using a very slow laptop installing the firmware in the STM32 and setting up the MicroSd card info file. I then spent another 4 hours soldering and assembling the radio. And once hooked up I had transmit but no receive. So I did a couple quick tests listed in the Groups Io DXFT8 board and discovered U1 a SMD IC was only half installed, like it shifted in the solding process, so I slid it back so all 4 tabs made contact with the board and that solved the problem. So I hooked it up to the antenna and powered it up, and it was now receiving. Unfortunately it is a QRPp transceiver which max power out on 40m is only 840 mW, on 10m its around 520 mW. Not bad for running off a 5V 1a USB Cellphone charger. You can power it with a 9 yo 15v external power source but it's only going to give less than 1 watt of RF. Plus side is it will run off one of those cellphone USB battery packs and the radio is about 1-1/8" thick and the same size as my cellphone with 3 times the weight. Now just need to add a SMA antenna and I'll be all set for POTA this year. 73 Matt NA1Q

Hi everyone,
I was talking with a friend of mine in Tuscon AZ and he was talking about how his club holds 2 ham flea markets and they do a raffle for a couple radios as a fundraiser for their club.?
Now I've seen other clubs do various items, some have unlimited tickets, some have a set number.?
Now crunching some numbers, say we buy a Icom IC-7300 which is currently $999.99 and limit to selling 250 tickets for $5 per ticket. Selling all 250 tickets would bring in $1250, netting the club $251. The drawing could be at Field Day or Annual Meeting or Club Christmas Party.?
So putting it out there what's people's thoughts on a club fundraiser, thinking $5 for a chance at a $1000 radio is appealing, and I know some folks would buy 1 to 4 tickets on average ($5 to $20).?
The proceeds could go to Field Day expenses, the scholarship fund, or anything the club deems necessary.??

Re: Radio Raffle Idea

Hi Matt,
?
The following is my personal take on your suggestion. Many club members already own the 7300. Given that we also only ever have 30 or so members show up for meetings, it's doubtfull that we would sell as many tickets that you estimated. Mark's suggestion of offering several smaller amount GCs from HRO or DX Engineering might be a better way to go. Having the club fork over $1K for a radio is a little steep and I stronly doubt we would recoup the money and make a profit. We can certainly kick the idea around at one of the club meetings.
