K5ZD on the move
¿ªÔÆÌåÓýI am in the process of moving from Uxbridge, MA to Belmont, OH. For someone with a multi-tower station, this is a real project. You can read about and see photos on my blog at ? ? I owe a lot to BVARC members Martin AA1ON and Mark KW1X for providing ground crew support. Could not have done this without them! ? Randy K5ZD ? PS ¨C Really enjoyed the club meeting Monday evening.? Nice to have a presentation along with the business meeting. ? ? |

Re: Antenna presentation at April 28th BVARC meeting
Peter,
?
Once again thanks for arranging Greg's presentation last night. Very informative and useful too. This is the way most club meetings should be conducted. I hope we can see more of this kind of programming in the future.?

UPDATE FOR UPCOMING CONSORTIUM
Side comment:? Last evenings meeting was just the shot in the arm the club needed.? Greg's presentation was very informative.? Today there is very little that the average ham can do with new transceivers (as far as repairs)? - the oportunity to build home brew antennas is still a wide open field for experiments. The business portion of the meeting lasted 8 minutes.??A tip of the hat to President Ray - great job.
?
?
?
Next subject- Last night several hams asked what the topic for the upcoming Consortium was going to be.? Because we are closing in on Field Day and we plan to use the ICOM 7300 (at least three) I? thought? we could go over the settings and put a "hands on" (YOUR HANDS) demo. You might even be able to make a few contacts.? You can apply what you learn at field day.? Come join us-it will be fun. May 6TH 7pm Manville Sportmans Club 250 High Street Manville.

Peter, Thanks for pulling that presentation together for last night.? It was a real refresher on some basics and an eye-opener?for getting the most out of portable antennas. 73, Lloyd - W1LBM On Tue, Apr 29, 2025 at 8:47?AM Peter Sichel K1AV via <psichel=[email protected]> wrote:

Good morning Jim
?
If that's a 1500W dummy load, I would be interested.
?
However, I won't be able to make the meeting this month.

Antenna presentation at April 28th BVARC meeting
Here's a brief write up on Greg Mihran's presentation (attached). ?Many POTA enthusiasts describe the POTA PERformer as a game changer. ?What struck me about Greg's work is his attention to both antenna modeling and field measurement.
?
For example many amateurs have been told that ground plane radials should be 1/4 wavelength long but by measuring the current flow on the radials he was able determine this is not optimal. Proximity to the ground detunes the radials lowering their resonant frequency so the point of maximum current is pulled away from the base of the vertical into the ground increasing losses.
?
Another novel concept is measuring how counterpoise length can affect the resonance of an end fed half wave. ?Most of us have been told the outer shield of the coax can serve as the counterpoise and the length doesn't matter but that's not necessarily optimal. ?When I'm operating portable I want the most efficient antenna system I can transport and setup easily.
?
Bring your antenna questions and enjoy!
