Locked Tower removal

Marc Hammann's Executor is now in possession of his estate.? She is requesting that we take down his tower as soon as possible.? As this will require the gathering of volunteers, equipment, etc. We're looking at the 14th of October.? If you can make it please let me know.? I'm not allowed to climb so I won't be able to play "roof rat".This is in Wichita on Ellis st. near Pawnee and Southeast Blvd.Gaylen W. Klein, USN(Ret.)

Sent from my iPhone just a reminder that our meeting is tomorrow. Hope to see you at 7 PM at the post.

Locked Re: Mouser.Com now has the raspberry pi boards

Interesting Newark Electronics was the importing Distributor pre-pandemic. Many people didn;t like them becasue they did not cater to small quanity orders.. Mouser on th eother hand, will send you a 10 cent item over night.
If looking to build a ALLSTAR Hot Spot a PI4 is overkill.. We run the repeaters with just a PI2 and they have been running 3-4-5 years with plenty of Horse power.

The only PI4 I have is a PI400 -- that the one with the keyboard.. I run it with HAM-PI suite of programs.

Larry W8LM...

Locked Mouser.Com now has the raspberry pi boards

Mouser is now the exclusive distributor for raspberry pi's and when I just checked had 5500 pi 4's in stock for $55 each!

Locked Marc Hammann's estate

I have been in contact with the Executor of Marc's estate. They will not be
in possession of his home until the 24th at the earliest and quite possibly
as late as the first week of October.

I will be meeting with them Saturday the 9th of September to take pictures
that I'll post so we'll have a better idea of what needs to be done.

For those who have graciously volunteered to assist in taking down the
antennas and mast I am most appreciative I will keep you posted as I get
further information.

Respectfully,

Locked OK Rover plans for the Sep 2023 VHF Contest

The VHF contest has been going on since the 1950's. It was started by a group in Syracuse, NY, and at one time I was VP of the Syracuse VHF Club.? Even if you only have 2 meters FM, give these guys a shot at winning the section or even the region. They prepare all year for 2 weekends.?

ARLX009 Tropical Storm Hilary: Amateur Radio Activates

Amateur Radio operators activated on Sunday, August 20, 2023 to
provide communications and information for Tropical Storm Hilary. As
of mid-morning Sunday, the system was moving up the Baja Peninsula
of Mexico, expected to cross into Southern California. Heavy rains
were falling in San Diego, and local media reported that 250 airline
flights had been canceled.

Amateur radio operations began Sunday morning. The WX4NHC amateur
radio station - - at the National Hurricane
Center was on air. "WX4NHC will be on the air on the Hurricane Watch
Net frequencies of 14.325 MHz and 7.268 MHz depending on
propagation. We will also be on VoIP Hurricane Net (IRLP node 9219 /
EchoLink WX-TALK Conference node 7203, ).

"We will also be monitoring WinLink reports via wx4nhc@...
(subject line must contain //WL2K)," wrote WX4NHC Amateur Radio
Assistant Coordinator Julio Ripoll, WD4R.

The Hurricane Watch Net (HWN) was also activated Sunday morning. "We
will remain active until our services are no longer required. This
system does have a good chance of crossing into California as a
Tropical Storm. If so, it will be the first Tropical Storm to hit
California since 1939," wrote net manager Bobby Graves, KB5HAV.

HWN seeks reports to relay to the National Hurricane Center in
Miami. They have operators who are fluent in English and Spanish to
take reports. "Such weather information we look for is maximum
sustained winds, winds gusts, wind direction, barometric pressure,
rainfall amount - how much over x-amount of time, storm surge, and
damage. Should you have any outgoing Health and Welfare Traffic
before, during, or after this event, we are happy to assist as we
work closely with the Salvation Army Team Emergency Radio Network
(SATERN)," wrote Graves.

HWN also exists to provide backup communications to official
agencies such as emergency operations centers, Red Cross officials,
and storm shelters in the affected area and relays damage reports.

The primary frequencies the net uses center on 14.325 MHz and 7.268
MHz, depending on propagation. HWN thanks radio amateurs for
yielding those frequencies during operation. "It certainly makes our
job easier, and I know those in the affected area appreciate it as
well," said Graves.

ARRL will continue to monitor the situation and update its various
social media outlets. HQ staff members are in contact with WX4NHC,
The Hurricane Watch Net, and VoIP Hurricane Net officials.

Locked 2 meter Repeater Down... Sorry.

About 9:30 today August 1st.. I noticed there was a dead carrier on the repeater..

I "kerchuncked" the repeater and got the beep-boop courtesy tone indicating the input was clear and the carrier was comming from the internet.
I closed the internet session and put the repeater in Local.... kerchinked and just got a single beep indicating it is local mode..

So I decided to put reboot the controller remotely.

The controller did not come up at all.. I have a 3 minute delay set so the network at th epost is stable and before the controller asks for it's static IP...?
Nothing.. So The post does not open till 3pm.. I will try to get over then to trouble shoot further..?
?I still have issues remoting in via the internet. Right now my option is remove control via the airways.

I have a small air conditioner in the window of my workshop. I had it on yesterday and it only dropped the workshop 10 degrees. I just turned it on.

If you check my facebook page, I have a reason not to be thrilled about things today besides the heat...
I hope to be able to resurrect it by 4pm this afternoon. or at least know the problem.?

Live long and prosper..

Locked Re: Amateur Radio Clubs..-Hamfests part II

Today and Tomorrow is the Oklahoma City Hamfest. I will probably drive down early tomorrow morning.

I bought my 3 tables and tickets for the Joplin Amateur Radio Hamfest August 25-26.. Their flyer states:
Registrations from the following States
AR, CT, IL, KS, MO, NE, OK, TX
Something not a single hamfest in Kansas can spout.

Thus far this year I have been in Hamfests in Claremore OK, Lincoln, Nebraska, Dallas-Ft. Worth Texas, and representing W0VFW at the Sidewalk sale.

I have probably been in 20 or more states going to hamfests over the years. I wholehartedly encourage you to attend a few every year. Some like Enid- only 100 miles away is a great small hamfest. If you never been you should go. They fed you coffee and donuts and hotdogs at lunch.

Larry W8LM.

Locked Amateur Radio Clubs..

Club members -
It's hot outside and I kind of took a trip down memory lane via the internet..

I think I need to share this with everyone so that can know what ham clubs and hamfests are like elsewhere. Some people think I'm a blowhard. But I found an old club I belonged to for 7-8 years while living on top of the Blue Ridge -near the Shenandoah River. John Denver sings of it, and both only run 14 miles in West Virginia. I lived there.?
Berryville was the closes town to where I lived. And some pictures and stories found at this web site for the Berryville Hamfest - August 5th are special. My Son and Wife (both N8NCC)? are buried maybe 10 miles from there but in West Virginia in the Shenandoah Valley still.?
The history of the hamfest going back 72 years is amazing. My Friend N4MM- John, an IBM Field Engineer. Was there all along. Many nights and many QSO's John and I had, Along with Charley K2HPT (SK) an IBM Field engineer in Syracuse NY..another Ham's Ham and his family sports maybe 15 licenses.?

What I'd like to share with you is the web site and should you surf to it, please read the history of the hamfest, under "About the Berryville Hamfest".

There you'll read that at the Hamfest,? they had entertainment. A local gal called "PATSEY KLINE" who entertained the hams and was paid $25.. She was discovered just up the road from Berriville, just after you cross the line into West Virginia at the RAINBOW CAFE.. Still in business and I've eaten there many times.?

The SVARC - Shenandoah Valley Amateur Radio Club has it's own "club house" a ham willed his home to the club to use as a club house in the city of Winchester Virginia, where George Washington was a surveyor and 2 civil war battles were fought. . Other Amateur Radio Clubs such as Findlay (OHIO) ARC was willed a chicken farm next to I-75 where they have 2 billboards and the rent from the bill boards pays the club the taxes to keep the x-chicken farm operating all year. They have a plus 100 foot tower for their repeaters. Findlay Hamfest draws about 3-4000 hams every year too..

If gas was back at $2.00 a gallon, I take a trip next weekend and go back to "Almost Heaven"? and the Barryville Hamfest.

The point is and I can only conclude it's the water in Kansas, that all clubs in Kansas do not even compare to clubs that are operating elsewhere. Why is that?? It's so important to see the VFW group thrive and flourish.

What can it take to get clubs in the area to create history such as these clubs have. I haven't even mentioned USECA in Detroit or Port City Amateur Radio Club in New Hampshire, or the Yankee Clipper DX association in New England- or RARA- Rochester Area Radio Associates in New York..?

So enjoy enjoying the Barryville hamfest via the internet and some real dedicated amateur radio operators on their 72nd? hamfest year.
