Locked Re: VE EXAM Testing on line... Yea or Nay

I agree with the Nay!
I am new to the club but not to ham radio. I was first licensed as WA6VPX IN 1976. I have operated from VQ9, KG4, VP9 and got my Extra the hard way in about ‘84. It is not nearly as difficult as it once was considering the test questions and answers are published and CW is gone.
Let’s not give is all away by allowing/condoning cheating by doing testing on line as a matter of course!

1. Accessibility, will all potential test takers be able to use the site?
2. What about preventing folks from cheating?

Thus no I am not in favor of online testing.

Have been thinking about your issues Mike and decided to post my thoughts and offer to help. I do not use Chirp to program mine. I do them manually and they work well.

First, since you have been changing settings and stuff I would suggest a factory reset. That way you clear away any issues created by previous actions.

Then I would program them manually. Not real hard actually and I am quite willing to talk you through the process. We can meet up on 146.520 and go through the process if you like. I work 2nd shift, so a Saturday or Sunday afternoon time would be best for me. We can get you up and running on the repeaters.?

And if you are just too frustrated to mess with it anymore I can simply do it for you. You can bring me the radios and I will program according to your wishes.?

Hi Larry... Sorry to read about your dental problems. I CAN imagine the discomfort your experiencing. I think it's a good idea is to bench the repeater at your place where you can work on it when your feeling better. Stay safe!!!

Locked Re: Repeater maintenance status & plant for RadioShack/Sean Hadipour

To further the rumors, I saw the dentist Monday morning my upper left jaw was bothering me for a week, I had 2 crowns and root canals done a year ago there. They took X-rays to see if the teeth had cracked and gave me antibiotics as I had the gum tooth area cleaned and medicated there in case of infection. This morning I saw my Family doctor. Sinus infection, was given the good meds, and told if it got worse, come back and he would drain the sinus.. I took a nap and my left eye almost closed shut. 1/2 my face is swollen. I went back and he drained it.. That was an hour ago.. I feel 50% better.. On the "good" drugs.. Need to keep in the recliner all tonight. keep hot packs.. I have not seen a doctor in 2 years and now 3 visits in 2 days.

I have all the parts to fix the repeater. I need to pull it, make mods on the controller card, install a new cable between the DMK audio dongle and repeater.? The best way to do it is to remove the repeater, modify it on my work bench and then return it. I do NOT want to impact any of the nets, especially during this time of heightened stress.?

I am monitoring the 145.27 repeater... The Australian girl we have Identifying is named "Shelia". We also "installed" OPEN SKY last week. If there is a SKYWARN alert you will hear it on the squelch tail.. It comes from NWS.. So listen next warning to see if the addition was a success...

There is an option to have the "Ham Radio Newsline" or the "ARRL letter" played on the repeater, either automatically at a certain time or by command- Touchtones. ? Any comments???

Greeting to all -
The repeater maintenance that was planned for this week has been? postponed.? Larry Macionski is having dental work performed this week.? He hopes to be able to work on the repeater early next week.

The club purchased a plant and sympathy card for Sean Hadipour.? The plant and card were delivered to the Radio Shack this morning. The Radio Shack is closed.? The way I understand it, Mark is usually at the store in the morning to do paperwork and Sean comes to the store in the afternoon. Mark answered the phone this morning and waited until I arrived with the plant and card. I doubt if either have set hours for when their at the store.

Sean's family had a graveside service for his father in the Kansas City area. Mark said Sean is back in Derby and plans to be at the store this afternoon.?

Take care everybody and be safe.

That a good idea especially in this time of the covid virus. However, this removes the one on one that clubs offer to personally meet the individual and the chance to help him or her extra help in teaching the ideals of ham radio. It negates the camaraderie of helping others a club offers.

Locked club meetings using conference call

Greetings to All -?
The following?information is in reference to possibly having club meetings by way of conference calls.

I signed up for the highly rated freeconferencecall

I found it to be very easy to use.

I couldn’t start a session. “All lines have reached their maximum limit”. This response was received for 4 hours.?

I didn't find this surprising since its free.

?

I did sign up for a 14-day free trial period on gotomeeting and tested it – I found I could immediately schedule and start a conference call. I did this while the freeconferencecall was not available.

?

Zoom might be another a viable option.?Vic B indicated Zoom is very easy to use from the perspective of the organizer and the participant.

Reviews indicate Zoom has a 40 minute limit.? To avoid the time limit it costs $14 a month.

I will test Zoom this week and get a group email out to let you know which one we will be using and also when we will try to hold a club meeting using group conference call.

I'll personally pay 2-3? monthly conference call fees for the club.?

Hope all of you are doing well under the circumstances.

Also if someone starts talking before th ecourtesy beep, the repeater timer will continue to run, and time out that person instead of resetting the 3 minute talk timer.

A "roger beep" (a carryover from CB not ham radio) is generated by the user's radio. It is to indicate the person talking has ended his transmission. CB does not have any timers.

The W?VFW repeater transmits a DPL tone of 071 but receives a PL tone of 103.5... The reason for that is if they were both the same a spurious transmitter could trip the receiver. That is not our case. The second reason is I hear 2-3 repeaters on our frequency, Topeka, Ponca City and Oklahoma City. Probably because of antenna height and troposphere conditions.

Currently W?VFW is connected to Blind Hams Talk Group. there is light activity, but tonight there will be a net at 8PM tonight..
