ALLSTAR is currently activated on W?VFW 145.27 repeater. We are transceiving with Blind hams Talk Group ALLSTAR #50631. KD4DYI (Pat) servers in NYC bridge our signal into DMR, D-star and ECHOLINK. That gives up multi-mode worldwide coverage.
Since linking I have heard hams in about 15 states, France, Germany, Switzerland and New Zealand. The beauty of ALLSTAR is that you can use a radio into a repeater, a radio into a hotspot, your computer, cellphone or tablet, or you can use a land line 800 number and you can then connect to over 20,000 other nodes. All Audio is CD quality, (48Kbits) and FULL DUPLEX..You can even control and use a HF rig..USING ALLSTAR is the simplest of these 21 century innovations. The most popular device to get you on the internet happens to be a $35 Raspberry PI. Then you need a dongle to convert audio to Voice over Internet Protocol (VOIP) I have researched these "dongles" and they can cost $35 to $295 depending to what degree you desire. Plus how much hand holding you need. I? believe I am the most educated in ALLSTAR in the club, as I got W?VFW/R VHF machine on the air? The unti I am recommending for a group buy is SHARI by N8AR... The kit (of which all surface mounted devices have been mounted and wave soldered.) has become available but in quanity 1 sales. SHARI ?is available as a simple parts kit (install 8 through-hole parts, the radio module and complete final assembly) for $55 (UHF), $60 (VHF). A fully assembled and tested SHARI is $80 (UHF), $85 (VHF) (We build your kit for you. You are still responsible for proper operation in the amateur radio service). Shipping is $8 via USPS Priority Mail. Basically the kit is placing the board in a metal box. I have emailed STEVE and he told me for the Club W?VFW if we ordered 5 minimum, he would ship for free.. The reason for the SHARI is you do not need to donate a multichannel radio to act as the hotspot. It comes with a 500mw FM radio and antenna. So.. You need a SHARI($55-60), a RASPBERRY PI ($35-55), A wallwart ($9.95) a SD card ($4.95), and internet. Then you via your HT can access 14,773 nodes... Here are links for your further investigation.
