W0NE Winlink Net Reminder
Hi All, It's almost time for our weekly Winlink net. This week we will try a simple exercise. To check in this week, if your client supports it, please try to check in using the "Winlink Check-In" form found under "General Forms." If you haven't used forms before, A nice tutorial for using Winlink Express is here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6hQfPUfnLgs&pp=ygUNd2lubGluayBmb3Jtcw%3D%3D A tutorial for PAT can be found here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XYWKUUGNGwQ&pp=ygUNd2lubGluayBmb3Jtcw%3D%3D Since a lot of check-ins are still using Telnet, use the comments field to note any roadblocks to checking in over radio. I will share these comments with the group after the net and hopefully some of the elmers in the group can offer some help or suggestions. If your client doesn't support forms, feel free to use the standard 1-line check in format we have used the past couple of weeks. Feel free to leave any comments below the check-in line. As always, send your message to W0NE@.... 73, Ben - KU0HN

W0NE Winlink Net Roster - Week #3 2
We had 12 check-ins this week with a few comments. If anyone has any suggestions, please feel free to share. Since we didn't do the usual check-in format in the check-in form I'm going to just list the callsign and any comments. Here is this week's roster: KF0S - Eric - First time using forms and the UI in PAT. Good additional small item for me to learn this week. Using Telnet as I haven't tried hooking my computer to one of my radios again. New hardware, different OS, and lack of time from when I did this is the past. I do have access to a D700 and also a MFJ TNC connected to an older ICOM mobile I had set up long ago. I do believe I have a USB-Serial dongle that should work. KC9LLI - Bruce KF9CP - Paul KD9KGQ - Shawn KD9POL - Rodney KD9CZM - Chris - Trying over HF. What are good gateways to choose from? KD9GVS - Rick W9GM - Ken K0GMK - Mark K0WLO - Wayne - Telnet only because not usually near a shack on Thursdays KE0EXE - Bob - Running Winlink on PC because do not know yet how to use HF radio to send to a node. Also not yet easy to hook up good HF antenna. Do have good, local, 2m FM capability and a laptop in Shack; "acoustic" is my only, viable coupling-means, for now. Eric, If you get the time to work on the setup and need help let me know. I've been running Pat for a few years now. Chris, Are you running PAT or Winlink Express? Winlink Express has built in propagation forecasts that I have found are very useful for finding an HF gateway. I typically use PAT which doesn't have this feature. Here are some of the gateways I use regularly. Of course success will vary with antennas, solar conditions, time of day, etc... so it's something you just have to get a feel for. 80 meters, day time: N0LCR-1, NU9R, K0SI 40 meters: K0SI, K9BBS, WD5EED, KD0SFY 20 meters: KD0SFY I see Ken has been using VA3EOA for the past few check-ins so that might be a good option to try as well. If anyone has any favorite HF gateways, feel free to share. Bob, what radios are you running? Maybe someone will have a good suggestion on an interface for your VHF radio. 73 and see you all next week. Ben - KU0HN

W0NE Winlink Net Reminder - Week 4
Tomorrow is our weekly Winlink net. This week let's do a regular check-in either with the check-in form or the normal email body in the following format: Name, Callsign, City, County, State, Country, Mode (and Gateway if applicable) If you use the form, you can put that information in the comments section. Also, feel free to share any projects you are working on--ham related or not--below the check-in information (either in the email body or comments field). For next week's exercise we will be using the position reporting feature if you want to plan ahead. 73, Ben - KU0HN

Moving/Copying Winlink Express files 2
FYI, I successfully copied my Winlink Express emails (and configuration) from one computer to another, today, using the following, simple procedure: [email protected] | Transfer configuration and data groups.io (And, actually, I even skipped the part about hitting “Finish”—so I did run the program, several times, on the target machine, before I did the file-copying.) This seemed to work fine, for a one-time transfer, if anyone else needs to do this. There is also a way to Export existing, downloaded messages, and then Import them into a different instance of W/E (like on another machine), if you are generally wanting to keep two machines “in sync”—I think it would be painful to do this on a regular basis, but once in a while might be okay. This way, the configuration parameters would not be overwritten, too, like they are if the whole directory is simply copied (like I did). -Bob KE0EXE

W0NE Winlink Net Results - Week 4
We had 10 check-ins this week, It looks like a few more check-ins over RF this week as well. Bob, KE0EXE,Rochester, Olmsted, MN, USA, Telnet via CMS. Location from GPS, manually-entered. All good learning for me: right amount, at right pace! Chris, KD9CZM, Holmen, La Crosse, WI, USA, ARDOP Using N0LCR at 7.102 -- Project I'm working on is to play around with my HP VR headset and productivity tools so I can have a virtual environment with all my desktop applications easily accessible in a Minority Report sort of fashion. I'd love to be able to use JS8Call and WSJTX in a virtual environment with multiple screens. KI6NAZ did a video about how he did it back in 2022 so I'm going to give it a try too. Lance Tagliapietra, AD0UT, Winona, Winona, Minnesota, U.S.A, Telnet Ken, W9GM, Marquette, Marquette, MI, USA, VARA HF Note: No projects currently Wayne, K0WLO, Madison, Dane, WI, USA, Telnet Mark, K0GMK, Rochester, Olmsted, MN, USA, VARA HF Collin, AA0CN, Rochester, Olmsted, MN, USA, Vara-HF, via N5TW Shawn, KD9KGQ, Holmen, La Crosse County, WI, USA, VARA HF Eric Van Norman, KF0S, Rochester, Olmsted, MN, telnet, My other hobby is R/C aircraft. While it's getting late in the season for spending a lot of time at the airfield, I will replace the floats on one plane with skis for winter flying. Ben, KU0HN, Lewiston, Winona, MN, USA, HF Ardop, I finally got the 6 meter Antenna installed for the packet node and NPR modem. Now I just have to get the radio interface built. It looks like there are some very interesting projects going on in the group. Next week we will do a location report, and my homework is going to be to figure out how to make a nice map for the results the next day. 73, Ben - KU0HN

Connect Yaesu FT-2400M to computer 5
Hi Bob, To connect your radio to the computer you will need to add one more item to the mix. You'll need either a TNC or an external sound card device between the computer and radio. You will also need the appropriate cables to connect things up. I currently use a TNC for packet when I'm portable, but at the home station I use an external sound card with my VHF rig. Two of the more popular sound card devices are the digirig and the SignaLink USB, but there are others. https://digirig.net/ https://tigertronics.com/ Both digirig and Tigertronics (SignaLink) offer a variety of cables. You can of course make up your own. One benefit to using a sound card over a TNC is that you can run VARA FM. Of course you will need to have a local RMS Gateway that has VARA FM available. Ben, or one of the other Group members may have something they would like to add. 73, Ken W9GM

W0NE Winlink Net Reminder - Week 5
It's time, once again, to check in to the weekly Winlink net. This week let's use the net check-in template again, but I will send a map on Friday with the reported locations. To access the template on Winlink Express, do the following: Click on the Message -> New Message menu item. Click on Select Template and then expand Standard Templates. Double click on either the GENERAL Forms or the MAPPING-GIS FORMS item to open it, then double click on Winlink Check In.txt. The form will open in your default browser. On PAT, do the following: Click Action -> Compose Click "Template" Click on either the GENERAL Forms or the MAPPING-GIS FORMS item to open it, then double click on Winlink Check In.txt. The form will open in your default browser. Fill out the form as usual. In the Send To field, enter W0NE. In the location, enter a description of your location. In the Latitude and Longitude fields, enter your FPS coordinates. You can find them on Google Maps or other mapping apps if you don't have a GPS handy. Feel free to fudge them a little if you don't want your QTH on the map. In the comments field, enter the usual check-in data: Name, Callsign, City, County, State, Country, Mode (and Gateway if applicable) In the second line, feel free to make any suggestions for anything you would like to see in future exercise, whether it is something new you want to learn or just a good idea you have seen on other nets. My homework will be to use the GPS data to map all the check-ins and I will send out a link to the map on Friday. 73, Ben - KU0HN

W0NE Winlink Net Results - Week 5 2
We only had 8 check-ins this week, although significantly more over RF which is good progress. As promised, here is the map of the results for those that included their location: https://www.google.com/maps/d/u/0/edit?mid=1h6Sh2Gxu3HbADug8G5D5xRLSJwAj8cw&usp=sharing I learned a bit making the map. When I sent my own check-in using PAT, some of the messages came in there, and some came in later when I was checking results with Winlink Express. Winlink Express has a neat export feature I wanted to try out for mapping, but since the first few check-ins were in PAT I had to do some manual data manipulation. Next time I'll know better. The full roster is below: Ben, KU0HN, Lewiston, Winona, MN, USA, VHF Packet Eric Van Norman, KF0S, Rochester, MN, Olmsted, Mom USA, Telnet Will be interesting to see the map. Ken, W9GM, La Crosse, La Crosse, WI, VARA HF, VA3EMN When more people are onboard or up to speed, try P2P sessions. Otherwise keep up with what you are doing. Glad to have the local net. 73, Ken W9GM Mark, K0GMK, Rochester, Olmsted, MN, VARA HF, Icom ic-7300, Diamond BB7V Vertical antenna on back patio at 23' Chris Muller, KD9CZM, La Crosse, WI, USA, Vara FM Still experimenting with VR productivity software and how to create a virtual environment for playing radio Boney Joseph, NA0SA, ROCHESTER, OLMSTED, MN, USA, RadioMail app on iOS, New Ham. Learning. Happy to be here. On vacation currently. K0NY - Early Check-In while doing some testing KF0ACN - Late Check-in but Packet Winlink was working from his QTH with the new antenna on 145.030 at Witoka. This was not previously possible from central Winona. On a side note, I always try to get my outdoor projects finished up "before the snow flies" which may just be tomorrow, so it looks like I'm behind schedule again this year. 73 and see you next week. W0NE Winlink Net Reminder- Week 6 3
Hello everyone, It's time for our weekly check-in. Since the weather is always a favorite topic for hams to complain about, there is a Winlink form for that! Since this week's weather has been worthy of complaints, you can use this form for your check-in. The form is found under Weather Forms -> local weather report. Feel free to use data from whatever sources are available. If you have a weather station or other measurement equipment, feel free to use it, otherwise internet forecast data is fine. If you enter GPS coordinates I will map the data again this week. In the Notes section, include the regular check-in line: Name, Callsign, City, County, State, Country, Mode (and Gateway if applicable) If you are mobile or don't have forms, you are still always welcome to check in with the usual data in the body of a message. 73, Ben KU0HN

W0ne Winlink Net Results - Week 6
We had a pretty good turn-out this week. I think I heard from everyone in the list, even if a couple of people couldn't check in this week. We also had quite the DX check-in from NA0SA using Radiomail--no form, but the GPS location did work. You will have to check the map to see where he checked in from. Here is the map of results: https://www.google.com/maps/d/edit?mid=1VbjFk-8mx1zFuIBldKx6eiJAvKkhl_k&usp=sharing Since we have done forms the last couple of weeks, I think next week's activity will be a challenge to use VHF packet (if you can) to connect through an intermediate node, either digipeating or with a connect script. I'll plan to send out some instructions next week. See you all next week. 73, Ben - KU0HN

I figured I'd start a new topic for this in case there is some discussion... I have heard from a few people that Thursdays aren't ideal for this net because of work schedules. I picked Thursday out of thin air, so I'm open to changing it if it could help people participate more easily. We could change the day, or maybe open the check-in period up to two or three days. If you have an opinion please let me know. 73, Ben - KU0HN

W0NE-7 Packet Node testing -- help needed
I promise this will be my last topic for tonight. The other evening, W9GM informed me he was having issues with the W0NE-10 Winlink gateway on 145.030. We did some testing, and discovered that because the new antenna receives so much better the volume coming in to Direwolf was way too loud. We adjusted it and I think it's performing a little better. Last night KF0ACN, who has marginal coverage at best, was having difficulty getting in on that frequency as well. I'm thinking maybe I turned the volume down too much. We are going to, hopefully, do some on-air troubleshooting this evening to find a happy medium. If you use the 145.030 port, I would appreciate it if you could give it a test and provide any feedback (although not tonight since I'll be working on it.) I'd like to get this figured out in time for next week's net. 73, Ben - KU0HN

W0NE Winlink Net Reminder - Week 7 4
Hello again, everyone. It's that time of the week. This week's exercise will be to send a message--use the standard check-in--using packet Winlink, but rather than connecting directly, connect via a digipeater or using a connect script to go through one or more packet nodes. This is useful if you are in a location with no local gateway, or if the internet connection is down at your local gateway. A suggested path for those in Winona or La Crosse might be to connect to W9GM-10 via W0NE-7 on 145.030 or KU0HN-10 via W0NE-7 on 145.670. In Rochester, you could connect to W0NE-10 via MNROC2 on 145.670. To use a digipeater in Winlink Express, simple fill in the gateway you want to connect to and put the digipeater's SSID in the box after "Via." In PAT, you need to type "via" in between the target gateway and the intermediate digipeater. For example, "KU0HN-10 via W0NE-7." Connect scripts only work in Winlink Express at this time, but they are a bit more powerful. To connect to W0NE-10 through MNROC2, set the connection type to Script and use the following script: C MNROC2 CONN !WAITFOR ? C W0NE-10 LINK More information on digipeaters and scripts can be found here: https://www.qsl.net/w4eat/w4eat/Making_a_packet_connection_to_a_.htm 73, Ben - KU0HN

VHF Packet WinLink Success - Finally 2
Setting up VHF Packet WinLink was a bit of a multiple day nightmare. The rig is a Yaesu FT-818nd and SignaLink connected to a Win10 PC. After a few YouTube videos some Google searches for advice on the 817/818 setup I got it all “tuned” to work. The issue that kept shutting me down was the RST WinLink node I was “trying” to connect to for testing was as it turns out… not working. Additionally, there are two frequencies published for it making the whole thing even more frustrating. Then.. I tried MINROC2 and it worked first time with no errors. i informed the RST node admin about the issues. I almost gave up… :-) 73 Mark (K?GMK)

Need some help getting VARA-FM up and running w/ Digirig 9
I had hoped to check-in this week, using the radio, but... ...I'm running into problems, with setting-up VARA-FM. I get VU-meter response to the rig's Volume control, after opening-up the Squelch. Rig is Yaesu FT-2500M, and the custom cable I bought from Digirig seems to be built correctly (I've beeped it out, and compared to documentation found on the Internet, for my specific radio). However, the x-mit functionality does not seem to work (PTT wire in that cable is not being triggered by the Digirig--or, at least, the radio never goes into transmit mode). I believe the problem is that VARA-FM is not recognizing the COM port (I get a message: "Unable to open radio serial port COM1. May be in use by another application."). I also tried VOX, but that put up a window that was a dead-end and said "Signalink TX Properties", with no enabled functionality/buttons on it. The USB-attach does seem to sort-of work, in that I see a new device come and go, in Windows 10 Device Manager, under "Audio inputs and outputs". It is called "Digirig (USB PnP Sound Device)"--I might have renamed it from "Generic..." or something like that, early-on, yesterday, when I first plugged-in the USB-C cable from the PC, to the Digirig. ...Not sure what to try next, or what to expect, or even how to debug this, further! "Help!?" -Bob KE0EXE

W0NE Winlink Net Reminder - Week 8
Hello Everyone, Tomorrow is our weekly Winlink net. Since it seems like lots of us are getting to the point where we are able to check in over RF, let's make that our activity this week. If it's not possible, telnet is still fine. Either use the Winlink check-in form, or send a regular body with the following format: Email Body: Name, Callsign, City, County, State, Country, Mode (and Gateway if applicable) I think if we have a few weeks of comfortable RF check-ins we can try peer-to-peer. 73, Ben - KU0HN

Hello Everyone, Here are the check-ins from this week: Ken, W9GM, La Crosse, La Crosse, WI, VARA HF, VA3EOA Ben, KU0HN, Lewiston, Winona, MN, USA, Packet via W0NE Mark, KM0GMK, Rochester, Olmsted, MN, USA, Vara HF, Packet VHF sorted out, now back to VARA HF. 73 de K0GMK Bob, KE0EXE, Rochester, Olmsted, MN, USA, Telnet, W0NE via web. I'm close, on VHF: Can ping W0STV-10 and get back "APPROVED", but my msg doesn't send. VARA-FM Ping reports a [green] +7.1 S/N on my side and a [red] +1.3 S/N on Steve's side. Using earphone, in Digirig "AUDIO" output, I hear the warbling tone, on the Auto-tune & Ping tests, at good volume. I tried all three levels of xmit power (Low, Med, High). Port is set to 8300. RMS Link Test passes, tho ports differ. Any debug suggestions? Chris, KD9CZM, Holmen, La Crosse, WI, USA, VHF Packet, Busy week and I almost forgot to check in. Thanks for the email reminder. If anyone has any ideas or advice for Bob, please do share. I can't see any reason why it shouldn't work. Also, since next week is Thanksgiving, we won't have a net. I'll see all of you again on the 30th. 73, Ben - KU0HN

W0NE Winlink Net Reminder - Week 8
Hello Everyone, I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving last week. Tomorrow is our Weekly net. For some reason I've been thinking about Field Day a bit--and it's really early for that. Field Day stations are eligible for up to 200 points just for sending Winlink messages. You can earn 100 points by sending a message to your ARRL section manager, and 10 points each for up to 10 more messages. These messages must be sent either in ICS-213 or Standard NTS format. For this week's exercise, send a check-in to W0NE using one of these forms. The message can contain the usual check-in content of: Name, Callsign, City, County, State, Country, Mode (and Gateway if applicable) Let's send over RF if possible. If not, Telnet is fine as always. 73, Ben - KU0HN

W0NE Winlink Net Reminder - Week 9
Hello Everyone, Sorry for the delay on the results this week. We had 9 check-ins which is pretty good. If anyone needs help with that, feel free to let me or the group know. I would like to try doing some P2P check-ins over RF on Dec. 21. I typically work from home thursdays so I should be able to leave a radio on to take P2P check-ins. I know not everyone--well almost nobody if I'm being honest--can get in to my station directly. We could digipeat via MNROC2 and W0NE-7, but if anyone else wants to volunteer to run in P2P mode to take check-ins for your local area that day I would appreciate it. 73 and see you all next week, Ben - KU0HN
