And now it is controlled by an automobile air control solenoid (which draws more current than I wished, but I checked and it operates down to about 5V so I can adjust that current drawn downwards considerably.....)
Works perfectly.? ?There may be an almost imperceptible delay on opening, it is so tiny I'm not sure it is really? there.? ?Zero leak during inspiration;? no longer any problem with control of the variable flow resistor in the inspiratory limb! And we already have hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of cycles on these kinds of valves.? ?It is being driven in this case by only 10psi and working quite well.? ?
(I finally got an adjustable pressure control -- haven't had one for years).
And the best part?? ?We can now take advantage of our 2nd MOSFET output to independently control these two valve!!!? So now we have all kinds of pauses etc that become possible.? ?
Dave -- you asked for a valve that would have negligible flow resistance...and 1,000,000 cycles --- and now I'm pretty sure you can have it.? This was the FIRST auto solenoid the man at the store could find, and I didn't quibble -- I just took it!!!? ?We can optimize from here, but this may be a game changer.? Credit MA.

Here is the FIRST video of the expiratory valve, simply trying to control it using air pressure prior to the adjustable valve.? A bit touchy to get working right.

Very clever, but too simple?

Re: University of Florida providing liability defense and coverage for identified volunteers for the use of their intellectual property in the care of patients at Shands Hospital
Thanks everyone for providing information? ?I hope the legal eagles will take care of all of us.? ?
they didn't quite understand the large number of people who were giving them FREE EXPERTISE......
Guess they got more than what they bargained for??? but if you really care about a project, you give it your best.
I've been off running errands to work on this....and still have much much more to do.? ?But some of the ideas that some of you have provided are starting to significantly improve the system.? ??
And the TESLA people are basicallly barking up the exact same tree....they just have better valves (probably $$$) and a bunch of paid engineers who have a lot of expertise also.? ?More power to them!!!!!? ?Having multiple people working on it is great.? ?And the docs are working on better treatements --- so a lot of research and private enterprise.??
Just need to remind everyone -- the Universtiy of Florid is NOT a manufactuer, nor an insurance carrier.? ?We do projects for the good of the world, and for the care of our patients and for the creation (normally) of licenseable knowledge.? ?In this case we are giving it away free.? ?Thus our disclaimer has always made it very clear that USE IS AT YOUR PERIL -- so more power to those of you who are manufactuers, but you will need to do your part as a manufacturer.? ?We cannot ditch everything that we have merely because you have an improved method which we could have working in, say, 2-3 weeks......that will be way too late.? ?If you have something, MAKE IT WORK and SUBMIT YOUR EUA.? ?Simple as that, folks.? ?we are GIVING YOU LOTS OF FREE INFO -- you run with it, OK?

That design is perfect… as long as you can maintain the seal around the wires… because now the electronic device out of the main air stream.? How about this mod.? I placed the BMP180/280 in 3D printed carrier and placed that sub-assembly in a separate section of PVC.? The connector to the BMP module exit one side.? The hose barb at the end lets this module be replaced, if needed, while still being able to get accurate pressure readings.?
And we can put this module in the controller. It's similar to Gordon's with the addition of a part to hold the BMP in place.? I think we need to keep it in place as the pressure changes could bang it around and break wires or etc.

Folks, the effort has paid off.?
The lawyers at UF, once properly appraised of the NUMBER of volunteers working on this, have an extremely strong liability and legal defense coverage for any volunteers who are ACKNOWLEDGED FORMALLY AS VOLUNTEERS.? ?The University of Florida is not a manufacturing facility; we are a healthcare medical school (Plus liberal arts, etc) -- and your expertise, incorporated into a ventilator, should it be used on patients at our hospital -- you will not onlly have coverage, you would have legal defense, and yoiu cannot even be sued individually? ?THIS is the coveraaage that I *always* had as a physician working for them for 30 years, that ALL their employees have, and that now YOU will enjoy.? If you are on the attached list of formal volunteers.
ATTENTION SQUAGLE:? ?We cannot provide coverage for you without your NAME and where you live.? ?So please provide that or we can't provide coverage for you -- it is your choice, we can't FORCE you to identify yourself of course.??
ATTENTION THOSE REQUIRING INDEMNIFICATION:? ? ?The University of Florida is prevented by law from providing you with Indemnification.? ?So that will not happen for you.? ? Just letting you know the message from the lawyer.? ?The protection for acknowledged volunteers is EXTREMELY STRONG in my opinion --- it has many layers that are almost impenetrable.? ?I never worried in my career when covered by that protection.??
NOW -- for the REST OF THE WORLD:? ?There are carefully worded disclaimers on the University of florida CSSALT page on this design that explain to potential builders, manufacturers etc outside of University of Florida --- you are welcome to use the information; you have no warantee, no coverage, NOTHING from UF.? ?And of course that is as it should be.? ?IF we are successful (with the hellp of all these volunteers about to be acknolwedged, hopefully before NOON EDT today) at getting an FDA EUA -- *then* other manufacturers will likely have a TON EASIER TIME getting one for THEIR project as well.? ? ?
This is a very positive outcome, and I appreciate greatly Dan D'Alesio (UF Lawyer) who immediately recognized the concern and immediaately found ways to cover these volunters -- and also many of you who have proivately or publicly given me crucial advice to search for this coverage.? ?So I expect to be fully operational again for UF within a couple of hours.
See the attached document filed with Dr. Gravenstein of UF last night for the list of volunteers about to be acknowledged.

MA -- YOUR SYSTEM WORKS!!! The mechanical engineering staff on the experiment is stretched WELL beyond their abilities, so I made a run to Home Depot today (darn, fogot my mask!) and assembled my own breathing circuit at home.? ?Orbit valve, took it apart, flipped the spring to the other side (made NO other alterations to the spring) and tested it.? ?With mouth generated pressure you have blow as if you were blowing up a Balloon in order to close the valve -- it DOES take some pressure with that stock spring.? (you could change that by removing some turns obviously) --- but the THRU RESISTANCE WHEN OPEN WAS COMPLETELY NEGLIGIBLE!!!!
So I plumbed it up in a small breathing circuit (the PVC isn't even glued or screwed)? ?and it WORKS. Not perfectly with this crummy implementation, but it works.? ?See attached VIDEO.
The way to do this would be with a separate electrically controlled valve -- you could use a car vacuum solenoid or likely even another sprinkler valve.? ?I may be able to put that together -- and run it from AIR supply or even the same blended supply feeding the main ventilator.? ?There is almost no volume to the control line.? You have to make sure the pressure will bleed but most of these have guarantees of that.??
In the video I have it being controlled while elevating a book to model the resistance of a lung.? ?I don't have a working regulator on my air compressor....so pretty yucky control of tidal volume here....should have bought a pressure regulator (the one on the compressor broke years ago).
Your idea works!!!? And by using our 2nd chnanel -- you could have independent control of the expiratory valve, so you can do holds, etc.? ? And the beauty is that at rest it is COMPLETELY OPEN.??
Great work, MA!!!!? ?
Gordon
