Locked Re. Vn12 ram gear case. 5
Thanks for all the help on the oil fill problem, seem to have that resolved. Now another problem, have a oil leak around shaft behind driven pulley. Don't see a seal in the parts manual. A question now is, I can't find any vent for the gear case. I have been working on everything from auto's to large machinery for about 60 years and have never seen a gear case using oil that wasn't vented. Would adding one be an advantage or a disadvantage. All comments welcome. Thanks all. On Sat, Jan 22, 2022 at 12:44 PM, Randall Rose via groups.io <randyj7210@...> wrote:

Locked Possible Part Out of VN 12
I have a Van Norman 12, serial # 13304 (earlier model) I may be parting out because the table needs some work, and the self-proclaimed buyer keeps delaying pickup of the machine. The machine ran quietly when I got it. Let me know via private message what arts you are looking for in case this mill has to go for parts. I have a shipping account and can ship larger pieces if needed at reasonable rates (ie: LTL, termianl to terminal, 500# on standard pallet for $210 from Washington state to Alabama, insured for $8000).

Locked My VN12 2
I'm sure I took a lot of photos of my equipment, but this is all I have handy. I added DRO's to the mill years ago after getting a job to build some camera bodies for a company in Israel. The dimensions were metric and rather than do the conversions on all numbers and create some errors, I chose to add DRO's to the machine on all three axis. I added an old photo of me making chips. The DROs I used were from a small company called Shooting Star, don't know if they are still in business. Jim

Locked Fabricating a VN Overarm and Arbor Support 2
Frank B.: Being a retired ME, you probably know better than I that an overarm and arbor support for a VN mill can be made in the shop. The overarm seems to be just a chunk of TGP ( Turned, Ground and Polished ) shafting stock. Substitute arbor supports can be made from solid stock or a weldment. Wouldn't be surprised if there are plans on the 'net. It might be of general interest to read accounts of boring an overarm right on the mill! The distance between centers of the upper and lower holes isn't critical if the arbor bearing ( or center ) _itself_is bored deliberately off center and mounted so that it can be rotated within the lower hole of the support. The single round overarm allows the arbor support to be located along an arc. The exact radius of that arc can be changed with the eccentric bearing. What say? John Ruth

Locked VanNorman 16M
I am happy to join the new VanNorman group. I have a mostly pre 1960 USA manufactured machine shop. My next project will be a 1960ish 16M. I bought the machine with VN vise, misc end and shell shell mill adapters along with some horizontal arbors. It's in decent shape but needs a major clean-up and cosmetic refurb. My first mill was a VN 6 and I'm looking forward to working another VN mill

Locked newly formed Van Norman group
I was very sorry to see Yahoo drop the groups, they have not done a very graceful job of it. I've tried to send messages via Yahoo and most attempts were a failure. I do not like Facebook for personal reasons. Most of the Yahoo groups that I subscribed to went to Groups.IO. I couldn't find a Van Norman group so I created one. I am very surprised about the response through the night. I created a "free" group. It is mainly a group to sent emails through. I don't know if the free level will allow storage of files, photos, etc. The paid level, $20 a month or $200 for a years has lots of features but I don't know that I want to be the one paying for it. There are other ways of storing photos and files, dropbox, google docs, etc. I don't want to be the only moderator of this group, I would like to see at least three people. I don't know that it will occupy much time but there still has to be somebody who can monitor it. Ideas? James Holtzman, emptech@...
