Please explain APRS related
7
I am interested in using and joining this mode of operation but fail to fully understand the basics of operation. I have used and currently have installed Winlink RMS client software and have completely operational. I access my local RMS VARA high speed Vara FM and also use VarAC HF mode. I also have have FLdigi latest version installed and using for sitorB monitoring and other modes. Can someone please explain to me what use does APRS and fundamental operation use do (other than location) and explain thoroughly give example of all software combined actually do? How are messages sent? What SW are you using? FLdigi? I like to utilize 30 meters but fail to find others who use this band for much of any mode other than FT8, which I have no interest in whatsoever. Todd AL7PX

Yaesu FTM-7250 Setup
4
Hi Has anyone setup a FTM-7250 on VARA FM 4.3.8? If so, which Yaseu model did you select for PTT? And is either of the RTS or DTR boxes checked? I have a Soundlink that I would like to configure with it. Thanks and Happy Holidays Doug Friedt N8FRJ

VARA APRS DX
6
All: Noticed at least one DX station on 30M VARA APRS today (see attached). There used to be quite a few Europeans on Robust Packet APRS, but those numbers have dwindled to a handful of stations and a few I-gates. Like VARA, it was far superior to standard HF packet, but one needed to purchase an expensive SCS modem to get on the air at the time, which is probably the reasons why it didn't take off. I've tested VARA using an HF path simulator and it appears to be even more robust than RP ¡ª there's certainly a night and day difference in HF channel performance when compared to standard HF packet, which is clearly noticeable when comparing the two on-air. Should be interesting to see if VARA APRS takes off. Tony -K2MO

Even More Joining New APRS-over-VARA Channel
33
Experimenting with a new map layout -- comments and feedback requested. Screen capture of 30 meters APRS-over-VARA activity on the new 10.148.200 Mhz USB channel as of 3:16 PM Eastern US Time on 22 Dec 2024. Note that late at night and in the early morning hours, I am copying G4HYG from the UK on this channel nearly every day -- that's why I have expanded the map to stretch across the Atlantic to cover western Europe. Vara HF & FTDX-5000
3
Hello all - I cannot get VARA HF to trigger my rig¡¯s transmitter. The 5000 is not listed on the Radio drop down on the Vara HF Winlink Session window. I tried several Yaesu rigs to see if that would work, but it didn¡¯t. Using Winlink Express ver 1.70.20.0 and VARA HF ver 4.7.6 I¡¯m using the Yaesu SCU-17 modem. It works fine with WSJT, but not on Winlink/VARA-HF. Ideas? TNX

APRS-over-VARA Info Updated on WA8LMF Website
I have just discovered that during the re-organizing of my website pages focusing on VARA and APRS, that I accidentally screwed up links and left out some important pages. This included pages on configuring various APRS client applications to work with VARA. This has now been fixed, I hope! 30 Meters APRS-over-VARA Frequency Change on Jan 1st 2025
3
Due to frequency overlap with, and interference to/from, the "Robust Packet" channels used in Europe, APRS-over-VARA is moving to a new channel ABOVE the present AX.25 APRS channel on 30 Meters. Currently, APRS-over-VARA is operating with a radio "dial frequency" of 10.147.600, placing the center frequency of it's 500-Hz wide RF signal at 10.149.100 MHz. Starting January 1st 2025 at 0000 UTC, the new RF channel center will be 10.149.700 MHz . To make the change, set your radio "dial frequency" to: 10.148.200 MHz USB Until Jan 1st, I will be running the old channel as usual, and ALSO beaconing test signals (KJ4ERJ's Space Station Object) every two minutes on the new channel. More info is on my web site at: <http://WA8LMF.net/VARA> This page is a gateway page to multiple posts on VARA and APRS-over-VARA that have previously been scattered rather haphazardly around my web site. Click on the link in the yellow box near the top of the page for the frequency change info. Stephen H. New 30M APRS-over-VARA Channel Beginning to Take Off!
The migration of 30 meters APRS-over-VARA activity to the new channel of 10.148.20 MHz USB "dial" frequency seems to be taking off -- - even before the announced change-over on New Years eve. As of 1 PM Eastern Standard time 22 Dec 2024, this is what I am seeing on my UIview test receiver/igate in central Michigan, USA. This display and new frequency will replace the current http://WA8LMF.net/map 10.147.600 Mhz main APRS-over-VARA UIview igate/mapping-webserver display at midnight UTC on New Years Eve. (The test setup on the new channel is currently also doing igate duty - the stations on the map below can be seen on findu.com, APRS.fi, etc.) Stephen H. Hi All, Do I understand that RMS relay is the storing and forwarding of traffic, and RMS trimode is the scanner to pick up traffic? Do they work together? Thanks, from a newbie. Wayne

Channel Busy ver 4.87
3
I am running a Flex 6400 with the most recent version of SmartSDR (3.8.19 etc). I am using Vara HF 4.87 and Winlink Express 1.7.20. My computer runs windows 11. Recently both VARA and Smart SDR were upgraded. At some point after that Vara would not play nice with the Flex. I have gone through all the prior postings, adjusted my filters, set up CAT and PTT on Slice B (the only thing I am using at present on Slice B), and made the appropriate changes in the setup in Winlink. WSJTX runs just fine and have not had a problem with it. I get the red channel busy box when opening a session and will not connect for auto-connect but will try for individual stations, although showing the channel busy block. I have tried everything I can think of, any suggestions? Bob W5APO

VARA wouldn't work without update?
HI All, I was out in the boonies yesterday and went to send a message using VARA and Winlink. Wasn't crucial but it was to let the family know where I was and what was going on as weather had prevented sticking to the plan. So not critical but I did want to get a message through. When I tried I could hit a receiving stations but I would not pick up their replies although I could hear them. I got at least one email acknowledging a contact with a new station so I know I was hitting them. Got back home and hooked up to the shack radio and expereinced the same thing. Updated VARA HF modem and it works now. My question is, does this happen often? New updates break the old version? Yes, I can try to remember to update before a trip, even though needing to do that sucks. But what if a disaster happens and I haven't updated? Is this a rare thing or do updates often break VARA? On the duh side I should have tried ARDOP or whatever else there is. That was a major stupid on my part.

K4HVF with a Gateway usage question
10
I am still new to operating a VARA HF Gateway so is it normal to see the usage decrease this time of year? The gateway was getting multiple usages a day and now I might see two a day. I have checked the antenna, radio, computer and everything I could think of. Just curious about this. Thanks and Happy Holidays Jeff K4HVF

vara hf sending issue

I was able to connect to a gateway using vara hf. I could not get my Winlink Outbox email to go out, The vara dashboard was all in the green. the S/N was at the bottom of the green area. MY radio(Ftdx10) was transmitting just fine, but the email stayed in the Outbox. Any ideas what is causing this issue?

VARA-FM Highly Variable Throughput
28
A group of us ran a test yesterday with Winlink VARA-FM on 144.950. The path was 14km with a single distinct peak in-between 145m above the northern site and 60m above the southern site. Initially we could send a 90kbyte file P2P between the two locations in about 2 minutes running between level 7 and 9 in FM wide. North was using a commercial J-pole about 8 feet off the ground, while south was using an Arrow 3-el Yagi on a pole (I don't know the height but was it was elevated). We recalibrated before almost every test. A third site (west) was 9km and 13km from north and south respectively. Calibrations yielded SNRs of 23 to 27 dB in all cases. North and south could initially exchange files at good speed as stated above. We then tried north to west and found that west could not send to north while north could send to west at good speeds. The former would start at level 9 and end up at level 1, with no data transferred at the higher levels. The latter would send the same file about 3 minutes. We then elevated north's antenna to 8m, and tested again. It started to rain, which may be significant. We found that south to north did the same thing as the west to north test, starting at level 9 and dropping to level 1, and sometimes disconnecting. North could send to south without issue. We changed back to the original antenna configuration with no improvement. The elevated antenna showed the best signal strength and SNR in calibration. South tried sending to west and had the same problem. While with the variable terrain and probably knife-edge diffraction, we're surprised at the extremely variable results without corresponding variation in signal SNR, and also the extreme difference between forward and reverse directions. We're going to review and set up another test, but we would appreciate any suggestions, comments, or similar experiences from others that might account for this? 73, Chris VE3NRT
