Do I understand that RMS relay is the storing and forwarding of traffic,
and RMS trimode is the scanner to pick up traffic?
Do they work together?
Thanks, from a newbie.

开云体育Wayne to answeryour question.?You will connect to trimode with vara. Depending on the setup at sysop you have few options If sysop is jyst a radio only store and forward If sysop os part of yhe hybrid system then you mail send or received using vara willbe collected / forwarded via the hybrid portion of the sysopsystem via www or via radio Yes trimode connects to hf and also vhf woth different software packaged using vara as a digital mode. It also support pactor 1-4, ardop and robust packet.? Hope this answers your question Greetings from the Namib Pieter Jacobs +264811277615 NETS NTNSS De v51pj On 16 Dec 2024, at 13:30, Wayne Francis via groups.io <w3hiz@...> wrote:

Hi Wayne, I have been using both VARA HF, VARA VHF, VARAC,and Winlink on my system setup,? The only caution I can share is when WIN11 does a update your?com ports can really screw up all your settings. When I participated in the 12 Dec EDM member exercises I paused my updates. However after I turned them back on and all my ports are trash ?and? now I am back to establishing all my ports. I'll send you a direct email if you want to check out all the RMS stations available, including the MESH ones.73 de Greg |
And to answer your original question...
Yes, RMS Relay is the store and forward component and RMS Trimode is the HF scanner (not VHF) for ARDOP, PACTOR and Vara HF. For VHF connections, use RMS Packet which in addition to AX.25 packet, also does Vara FM. Both RMS Trimode and RMS Packet work with RMS Relay. Support for these applications is on Google Groups:

开云体育Greg, I really don't understand all the 'windows updates trash my ports', trash talk. My shack computer started out as a Windows 10 laptop, that was then updated to Windows 11, and through that and all the various subsequent security and feature updates, I have NEVER experienced any port mess up, mysterious volume control changes, or ANY of the stuff that so many folks keep slamming Windows over. WTF are you guys doing to your systems to get such bad behavior? I DO remember to ALWAYS plug my USB cables in to the exact same physical ports from each of my devices (including an external hub).? And I ensure that my cables are plugged in and the devices are turned on, BEFORE I start up any apps that use those devices. Those two edicts have safely kept me out of the 'Windows trashes my ports' business. I'm sure YMMV, but please give it a rest, blaming Windows for everything.? It's simply not so... 73,

开云体育I agree with Greg.? Just like with MacOS & Linux (which I also use), you can reduce your issues by reusing the same USB ports for each peripheral as the OS remembers the last one (if it’s not already used by another peripheral), and otherwise you’ll need to re-point apps to the new port. ? There’s no escaping the fact that the vast majority of ham radio apps are for Windows and Android, for good reason for developers.? Linux is growing, which is a good alternative if you can give up your fav Windows apps or find out that they run on a Windows API stack on Linux (not often; eg MS Office does not). ? You can always run a virtual machine layer on MacOS, but you have to buy a Windows license anyway for that.? VMware’s Fusion (which costs $) provides the best networking compatibility, inc USB, but you can try the free VirtualBox from Oracle that can be made to work most of the time after jumping through some hoops.? YMMV, as I have not bothered to spend my time on getting VARA to work in a Windows VM, since it works so well on my native Windows metal. ? Stephen W9SK ? ? I always read these stories of sound device issues but never experienced anything. I have never seen the COM port issue. But with Windows 11 24H2 and the first update after that, I had to spend hours resetting the audio devices. Nothing was unplugged during the update. But upon restart, devices were reassigned and some devices were outright reconfigured. After I had the sound devices properly reassigned, then I had to go over the volume levels. Hours of work to get things back to what I had just prior to the update. And even on my regular desktop and laptop, that have no radio software installed, I had to make a change to the sound device assignment. So yep, it does indeed happen., Nothing to do with unplugging and reconnecting cables.
?
The good news is that these major updates don't roll out so often. I'll likely not need to change anything again for several months. And before the next major update I plan to take screen snapshots of volume levels so I will be prepared if I need to reset volume levels again.
?
In short, some - not all - of the updates do change things. Been there and saw it with my own eyes.

开云体育Doug, I just upgraded to Windows 11 24H2 on my shack laptop (HP Zbook) leaving all my devices/radio plugged in, and after all was done, I carefully checked my audio levels and audio/com port assignments, and NOTHING was touched, period. I then proceeded to run my usual set of radio programs, Ham Radio Deluxe, WSJT-X, and Winlink with VARA HF, and EVERYTHING continued to work as before.? I made FT8 contacts, which were logged to HRD, and sent a Winlink message on 40M to a remote RMS. So, I don't know what kind of weirdness you have going on your system(s), but every laptop in our household has now successfully upgraded to Windows 11 24H2, with NO issues whatsoever.? That includes two laptops heavily used for game playing by my daughter and grandson, my Photoshop/Lightroom laptop, and my XYL's work-from-home business laptop. 73,
