Two miscellaneous Var AC configuration issues - frequency scheduling and antenna tuners
8
I saw in prior versions of this program that you could put in place a frequency scheduler. I don't see any such option now. Has it been discontinued? If it's still an option, how do I do it? As to antenna tuners, I have owned one for roughly a month now. How does the software actually to the antenna tuner? I let it know that I have one. I am clueless as to the program interacts, with the tuner. Would you please explain Thanks.

Var AC configuration issues. HF and FM
3
I have a station that I have successfully installed Vara AC on. I use Vara HF as my modem. I have separately installed VARA FM. I don't currently use it, because there are no gateways within range. I just came aware of people using VA AC with HT's and miles, including using other digital programs such as FLDIGI. It's particularly interesting, in that they are using DMR radios such as the Anytone D87UV HT. So the question is how go I use both the HF and FM versions of Vara? Is there a way to configure one copy of the program to allow you to choose which one you want to use for a particular session? Alternately can you run multiple copies of Var AC configured differently. Which is the preferred alternative? Thanks for your attention to this issue.

Setup for VARA on ICOM M-803 Marine SSB?
I am trying to setup for VARA HF on my ICOM M803 and have read through an earlier thread on the M802. I would still like CAT control of the radio and I am fine adding a sound card modem to my setup. I currently have a Pactor via Bluetooth working fine but want to move to VARA HF. I see there is a Digirig and SignaLink option for sound card modems, but maybe only the Digirig will allow serial control of the radio operation and SignaLink is only the data/PTT? I am not accomplished at making my own cable and would like to buy the appropriate cables to make this work on an M803, which may be slightly different than the older 802. I wonder if any of the cables I have for the Pactor would work with the Digirig?

VARA HF Anything obvious??

Here¡¯s a screen grab of WinLink Express this morning. In a nutshell: I: I heard the cute little sounds from VO1GNP 2: In Channel Select I chose Start and the script showed VARA TNC was launched and connected 3: Momentarily, First when it comes on, I get a chance to connect - as it shows Channel Free 4: Immediately before getting a chance to send, it switches to Channel Busy and stays there. 5: Is there anything obvious in what you see that I may be doing wrong?? Vara:HF and VaraFM hang on connect with Wrong Command
System info: Pi5, x64, x11 (Wayland disabled). varaHF and varaFM installed and previously working in wine. Rig control via FLrig. Radio: 991a VaraHF ver 4.8.9 VaraFM ver 4.3.8 Current condition: VaraHF will transmit and receive audio in tuning mode, both applications will ptt the radio (settings>soundcard>Tune). Problem: VaraHF hangs on connect, log indicates "Wrong command: CONNECT KM4PVB KN4CCQ" VaraFM hangs on connect, log indicates "Wrong command: CONNECT KM4PVB WC4EOC-8" Can confirm audio in and out, and radio control working fine in both applications within wine. Additional information: In VaraFM, while attempting to use "AutoTune", entering WC4EOC-8 returns "bad callsign" when attempting to autotune. removing the ssid will cause the radio to transmit the test packets, but the remote station will not answer without the ssid. I am a registered VARA user, and it does not seem to matter if my registration info is in or not. Steps taken: I have tried a total re-image of the pi and reinstall, and yielded the same results. I have tested my other computer with the radio, and it functions. See log below- running Vara in debug mode: VARA_DEBUG=1 pat http 2024/11/20 21:11:18 my-rig ready. VARAHF: "Wrong Command" error when attempting to connect to gateway.
3
This is using Linux (Raspberry PI OS) with wine and Vara HF 4.8.9 and also 4.8.7: This was working, and then it just suddenly stopped working. Every time I attempt to connect via PAT, it does not even attempt to connect, and I get a "wrong command" error in the VARAHF Log. For instance, I try to connect to the AC8NP gateway via PAT. No connection occurs and the VARA log entry is "wrong command: CONNECT KD8K AC8NP". For testing purposes, I connected via telnet directly to VARAHF on port 8300 (command port). I can enter MYCALL KD8K it responds with OK, but when I enter "CONNECT KD8K AC8NP" It simply says "wrong". When I follow that procedure on another computer it starts to connect, so I believe that sequence should work. I have totally reset wine with a new prefix and reinstalled. I also deleted version 4.8.9 and tried version 4.8.7 in case it was a bug with 4.8.9. I have copy/pasted my registration key multiple times and confirmed it was correct. Not sure what it could be, would appreciate any idea's suggestions. Thanks, John KD8K

How to monitor another convesation
2
Hello, Can anyone tell me how to monitor a VARAC conversation? I have set up another instance of VARA HF to run in monitor mode and have selected Monitor on the Monitor pull down. I can here the traffic and I can see the signal ICOM 7610 scope screen and on HDSDR. I set the VARAC frequency to correspond to the frequency of the traffic I see on the Spetrum scope i.e. 14.107.250 But I cannot see any text on the VARA HF monitor window that goes along with what I am hearing. What am I doing wrong? How can i get monitor a chat to work? Thanks, Dave W4EIP.

Soundcard ( computer side)
4
I was on VaraAC talking to a guy. He said my audio as passing through. ( don't know how that could be) I have not had any issues with several contacts. He told me to click on the microphone at the bottom. When I did this it somehow effected the soundcard and because of this the Vara Modem is effected. I think it is only on the receive. also effecting Winlink of course too. Any advise or settings to try? Jeff W0NWA

Cross-County Road Trip Again Shows Overwhelming Superiority of VARA for HF APRS!
In October 2024, I made a major road trip from my home QTH in central Michigan to Los Angeles and back. On this trip, I made the most extensive test yet comparing the performance of classic 300-baud HF AX.25 packet vs the VARA high-performance software modem for 30-meters HF APRS. I beaconed every 10 minutes, alternately on classic packet and on VARA, on the 30M APRS channel during the entire 6125 miles (9850 Km) of the round trip. My home station in Haslett (near East Lansing) Michigan received and igated both modes. In addition, several other stations around the US also served as igates for the VARA mode. The trip again confirmed again the overwhelming superiority of VARA, with it's built-in multiple levels of forward error correction, over classic HF packet. There were many days on the trip where I heard NOTHING in the car on classic packet APRS (lots of solar storms & disturbances), but copied multiple stations (including my own home station) on VARA. Full details on the trip, the setup and the results here on my website: <http://WA8LMF.net/RoadTrip/> and click on the link for RoadTrip-Oct-2024/index.htm P.S My proselytizing for APRS-over-VARA seems to be catching on -- I am now seeing igates on both coasts and the midwest beaconing regularly on the APRS-over-VARA mode on 30M since the trip! Problems - Vara Modem and Winlink Express

Totally new to this mode so please go easy on me. It took me 3 days to get here!? I¡¯ve installed VARA Modem and WINLINK Express. When I go to Soundcard and press TEST it stays RED and I get the message: ¡°To use the Tune button you have to link VARA with RMS Express, Trimode, BPQ32¡.etc¡± I downloaded RMS Link test, ran it and everything passed ok. I¡¯m very new at this (2 days old) so anything to get this going will be a blessing. Thanks de Keith VO1AE The sound card in the IC-7300 is ok because I¡¯m using WSJT-X with FT8 etc., no problem. The COMM Port for WSJT-X is COM5. That¡¯s the only one showing. Is it possible this could be a COM port problem? AND: In VARA Setup, I notice that at the top the number is 192.168.2.100 Is this correct...seems I saw it elsewhere beginning with 127

Windows USB Drivers for VARA and DRA-50 on Yaesu FT-991A
22
I am having difficulty getting VARA to work with my DRA-50 and Yaesu FT-001A. Previously it worked fine until I took the station down to upgrade my desk. When I set the audio driver in VARA, I see two USB drivers, USB Audio CODEC and USB PnP Sound Device. I was previously using USB Audio CODEC, and I think the USB PnP was added with some Yaesu drivers. In order to get PTT function on the DRA-50, I have to select USB PnP for the OUTPUT. If I select USB PnP for the INPUT, i see zero activity on the VU meter. In order to see activity at the 1 o'clock level, I have to select USB Audio CODEC. With that combination I have been unable to connect with a Winlink gateway. Is there a conflict between the two drivers? -- KV5M Lee Huntsville, Walker County, TX EM20fq

Vara with Pin Point APRS
4
Has anybody been successful running Pin Point APRS on Vara HF? I can use a Kantronics Kam XL ,with Pin Point, and send a position report to my 30M AX25 packet receiving station ok. So, I know Pin Point is set up properly. When I switch to Pin Point using Vara and send a position packet the Vara tones go out on the connected transceiver. However, the tones run for about 18 seconds (way to long). No position is reported through my 30M Vara receiving station. My 30M Vara station hears most of the traffic in the US including WA8LMF-5. I am testing Pin Point connected tp a transceiver running 10 watts to a dummy load ao as not to overload either of my Vara or AX25 stations. Any comments on a fix are appreciated. VARA HF - Winlink Gateway - audio input varies by band
5
Hi. There's probably a simple explanation/fix, to make me feel stupid, but I'm having some trouble with my Winlink gateway. As it scans from 80m, 40m, 30m, 20m, 17m, the audio input jumps from deep in the yellow region to touching the red zone (-45db to -7db). It is low (-45) on 20 & 17, and high (-7) on 80, 40, and 30m. Since it varies with the band, I suspect some kind of rfi(?), but it's high or low - no in-between. Also, I don't know what kind of rfi would affect the Windows 11 audio levels. I have ferrites on all the cables in/out of my micro-pc. Please provide me an "aha!" moment. Friday W6FRI

40M HF VARA
8
I have had HF VARA set up on my computer using my Kenwood TS-850S and a SignaLink for the past year and a half. It is my goto digital mode and I use in multiple times a week. In fact, I used it on Monday to send my digital check-ins to the various ARES nets I inhabit each week - - with no problems. I always us the same gateway (K5RAV) on 7102 Mhz. I receive that signal usually about S-8 or higher, and it usually picks me up after the first or second poll. But today, I tried to send some Winlink messages and K5RAV (or my station) seemed to be acting strange. On the TS-850, I can hear both sides of the "digital conversation" and I have become accustomed to how it sounds as it moves through the connection, sending, receiving, etc.. K5RAV picked me up immediately after the first poll, but then we went into a cycle where it would poll, my radio would answer, it would poll, my radio would answer, etc., and after about 10 of these cycles I got a QRT, both stations identified, and no traffic passed. I can only guess that I inadvertently changed something in the settings, so I went back through the set-up menus, but I could find nothing that deviated from the original configuration. I will admit that I am definitely a "user" of this technology and I have no idea what to check next. I have tried 4 or 5 other times to connect to K5RAV with no luck, and I have been working my way through other 40M gateways to try, but haven't gotten into one yet. I ended up sending my traffic on VARA FM. The VARA Log file from one of the attempts looks like this: 2024-11-13 16:50:21 Connecting to K5RAV... 1/15 2024-11-13 16:50:30 Connected to K5RAV VARA HF v4.8.7 2024-11-13 16:52:00 QRT Received 2024-11-13 16:52:06 Disconnected TX: 0 Bytes (Max: 0 bps) RX: 0 Bytes (Max: 0 bps) Session Time: 01:36 You can see that there is a 1.5 minute period between the connection and the QRT Received where there is just a back and forth handshake of some kind but no traffic getting sent in either direction. Can anyone suggest some guidance I can use? Thanks.

VARA HF signal to noise ratio issues
4
I'm having a problem with the SNR. The SNR is always in the Red, typically -19db or so. When I monitor the signal, it is very strong so I'm not sure why this continues to be an issue. I'm running an FT-819 with a Signalink. I've tried adjusting the TX and RX on the signalink but it doesn't seem to make any difference. Any ideas why I can't get the SNR to improve? Thanks in advance.

FM Deviation Calibration with TinySA Ultra
5
#icom
#VARAFM
#DRA
I have to calibrate the Wide VaraFM on a Icom 208H mobile VHF transceiver and thought I would try it with a modestly inexpensive TinySA Ultra. I asked about this procedure in the TinySA forum. My question is, can I just use VaraFM modem SW to modulate the carrier? Just use the tune function alone or do I need another form of modulation to the carrier? I will be using a DRA-50 soundcard. Am I correct in my thinking? Also, while viewing the carrier and adjust to minimum carrier? I'm hoping to just use the external antenna on the TinySA Ultra and just transmit into a dummy load on lowest power (5 watts). I'm hoping to pickup the close signal for the transceiver. Any thoughts on this setup and procedure? Thanks, Todd AL7PX
