Soundcard device missing in action!
I am trying to use VARA HF to send e-mails via WInlink, and I keep getting the mesage, "Soundcard device missing in action!" in the VARA HF log.? When I open a session in Winlink Express and then hit Start, I get the message, "Soundcard device is not ready", and then nothing else happens. Equipment is as follows: Kenwood TS-480SAT Signalink USB Dell Inspiron 15 3000 VARA HF and Windows were configured according to instructions from Signalink.? Jumpers in Signalink checked and double checked.? Input and output for the Signalink are set to USB Audio CODEC.? Normal sounds for computer set to computer soundcard. I am not seeing any audio on the VU meter in the VARA HF window.? The needle is at -96dB and doesn't move at all. I am not using CAT control for the TS-480. On the TS-480, AGC is off, and all filters wide open. On the computer, Wave Audio Services and Wave Audio Universal Services are disabled. I can hear signals clearly on the radio's speaker, including CW ID on signals. I can go to Settings>Soundcard and hit the Tune button, and it keys the radio.? When it is keyed, I can adjust power output from the Signalink. I'm not much of a computer person and have never attempted digital communications before this current effort.? I operate mostly CW. I have been trying to solve this problem for a week with no success.? Help would be greatly appreciated. |
I recently bought an HP Win11 CPU and had a heck of a time to get all my hardware and software to interface with my setup. First things first. After struggling with the HP Win11 machine I discovered that 2 things kept messing with me. Windows update and COM port installation and resets by Windows. So. I first turn on all my external hardware . FT-857D, DAR -50 sound "box", Alinco's DR-135 and DR-235. The 135 has a DAR circuit plugged in for interface and the 235 has the TX Serial chip for packet. The. I boot up the computer and after dust settles I pause Win update. I then check my device management settings for COM/PTR ports. I had to write down the manufacturer of each COM port, check the "properties" to verify the specific parameters have not changed (once I had a working system). A 3X5 or notebook entries are helpful to record " known" working interfaces . I then right click on the computer sound icon for " mixer settings" and with Win11 it can be a bit confusing if you don't write down the speaker and microphone setting for the "sound card/box" you are using. I make sure win system sounds are muted and my settings for the Winlink app for system I will boot up ( in this case VARA HF).? If all looks good I open my WL and do a quick test of my local VARA HF RMS for confirmation of 2 way connections. There has been quite a bit of help from folks in this group, so dig through the information that may be similar to your setup. Almost all the sound card manufacturers have help files on interfacing equipment. As with any hobby, reading and documenting your steps can help you in the long run to figure out a solution for yourself. System block diagram, cable configuration, and keeping track of anything else that can upset your working configuration is a challenge but rewarding when you get it all together. I may not have helped you with a specific solution but I hope you won't give up in getting your setup working. I now only use my HP WIN11 for my ham station.?? Good luck. 73 de Greg? I enjoy CW a lot! On Mon, May 27, 2024, 7:01 AM John Dempsey via <johndgex=[email protected]> wrote:

Excellent suggestions from posters.? Also do a search on your setup.? It is not uncommon.? CAT control will need to be a separate interface since Signalink doesn't provide that? (channel selection) unless you're doing that manually.? Another demon in the mix can be rf on the cables.?? I've used Palomar kits with success if you don't have a stash or not familiar with the challenge.? An exceptional USB cable is also necessary.? It should have ferrites on both ends and shielded.

I have ordered cables for radio control based on input from another op who uses VARA HF with his TS-480. I am beginning to believe that radio control (CAT control, rig control) of some sort is a necessity for VARA HF/Winlink to work.?? I've been searching for a week to find a fix, all to no avail.? Perhaps this is it! I tried wrapping my USB cable several times through an FT240-31 toroid, but that did not solve the problem. Thank you for your reply.? Sooner or later we will find the fix.

Steve, thank you for the reply.?? I tried the USB cable that I received with my WinKeyer USB, and I know this cable works.? Using that USB cable did not solve the problem. Jason at SIgnalink told me to make sure the jumper from SPKR to Pin 5 was installed properly.? I removed and re-stabbed it, so I believe the jumpers are OK.? I may end up ordering the wired module for the jumper connections. Tnx es 73, John N5CM

Cat control will have nothing to do with you not having any RX audio this is a Signal Link Issue. You say you have TX as you can adjust power out via the Signal Link So my guess would be you have the RX jumpers in the Signal Link incorrect Or a bad USB cable.

Thank you for the reply. Settings for Signalink are USB AUDIO CODEC for input and output. Settings for system sounds are Realtek Audio. 73, John N5CM

开云体育Which is the DEFAULT sound device(s) according to Windows? Should be the Realtek Audio, not the USB AUDIO CODEC. If you plug the USB into a different port, Windows tends to assign the 'new' sound card as the Windows default. On 2024-05-29 12:14, John Dempsey via groups.io wrote:

As I understand it, Speakers (Realtek Audio) is the default device in WIndows, and USB AUDIO CODEC is the default communications device.

Have you tried a different USB port or a different Signalink USB? To me it sounds like something is intermittent along the USB port/cable line since you were able to key up the radio in a tune, but the missing sound card error pops up.
Also the TS-480 has a squelch knob on the lower left side of the radio, so maybe your audio is squelched and don't see anything on the VARA VU meter. 73 John Denison KD5YOU |
开云体育also remember to turn usb power setting to stay on, not to turn off to save power. Bill On 5/29/2024 6:00 PM, John Denison via

Nothing yet, Ken, but I haven't given up. I have ordered cables to enable rig control on my TS-480 through a USB port on my computer.? I have downloaded the ARCP-480 software from Kenwood.? My cable should be hre on Tuesday 06/04/24. I have numerous searches for a possible fix, all to no avail. I'm now of the belief that rig control may be a necessity to run WInlink/VARA-HF on the 480. 73,? John N5CM

John,
?I have been running Winlink with VARA on my TS480HX for years now without any issues. I also use VarAC and other digital programs with it. I don't have a SignaLink but use a DRA-100 as my interface. My question to you is what cable are you using to interface the SignaLink to the rig? Is it the 13 pin or the 6 pin din for the rig? I know this might be a shot in the dark but thought I would ask.? JIm Ebner, N8JE |
Jim, I am using the six pin connector that plugs into the DATA connector on the TS-480 main body. 74, John N5CM
