Hi John,
On the back should be a 6 pol miniDin connector for use of a audio-interface.
I did look to a Kenwood manual and it says that only a E version (Europeen?) has that connector and the A (American?) version not.
In the manual you see on page 7 a pinout of that connector and on page 58 how to setup for 1200bd/9600 bd.
For audio-interfaces I have great sucsess with interfaces of:
Avoid interfaces with transformers and VOX for the best results.

Carol, The challenge with the FT-891 and VARA FM is VARA FM would only work on 10 m and 6 m bands.? In most regions, there are very few VARA FM RMS gateways operating on 10 m and 6 m bands.? There are many other transceivers which would be better suited for use on VHF/UHF bands.?
What are your personal goals for use of VARA FM and what bands are being using in your region?

"new" TM-271- HOW TO CONNECT
I took a chance and purchased one of the Kenwood TM-271 online from China with the intention of adding the data connector for use with VARA.
I have the radio, but the circuit board is nothing like the ones in the posts that show how to do the connection and the PC board is not like the one in the 271 service manual.
The chassis has the notch for the cable and the radio includes the menu options for 1200 or 9600. ?
Has anyone figured out if / how to make the connections in these radios?
The manual is in Chinese only.? I downloaded the Kenwood manual, and the menu items are all the same.?
It programs with the Kenwood MCP-1A or with Chirp, and both report that it is a 271.?
Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Yes. ?I use the internal sound card. ?It won't support FM Wide but I'm OK with that. ?Took a bit of work to figure out all the menu settings. ?But there are several web sites with advice on digital configuration for the FT-991A. ?I use the rig for Field Day mostly, and mostly operate WSJT-X on HF. ?But the settings are the same. YES! I have been using it successfully. I use the data cable along with a separate sound dongle plugged into my laptop.? SABRENT USB Type C External Stereo Sound Adapter for Windows and Mac. Those hints were anticipated though match my initial settings.? Double checked, actually triple checked then still no modem audio exchange.? Hardware issue would be considered if it weren't for? VARA HF, FLdigi, and WSJTx HF working just fine.? The issue is isolated to VARA VHF at the moment.?
Oh yes, and confirm the return to mic for voice.? I don't use voice at the moment as I am functionally deaf.??

I use FM Data mode for VARA FM on my 991. Set audio input for that mode to USB in the menus then you don't have to keep switching back and forth when you use FM voice. Once you get it working, save to a memory.

You confuse bauds and bit Per seconds. Gaussiam error are for a given electrical change in the signal Per seconds. The goal of modulation like Vara is to put a maximum of bits in each electrical change. So the throuhput in bit Per second is a lot higher than the bauds rate
I use the Alinco DR-135T for my RMS Gateway station and it easily runs VARA FM Wide using a Masters Communications DR-50 interface.<IMG_1158.jpg>
