Re: TYT TD-9000D for VARA FM
#VARAFM
If the radio is transmitting and the RMS is responding, then the interface is working.? I would suggest turning the audio levels down (may have to use the Windows Sounds and Sound Settings apps) and then use the autoadjust in Vara FM to fine tune.

Winlink VARA FM 3.8.4 on Raspberry Pi4B- TUNE hangs ON - must kill with Task Manager
#VARAFM
I am running Windows 10 for Raspberry Pi4B and VARA FM 3.8.4.? When I try to TUNE the soundcard ( Signalink USB) the PTT led comes on and the radio triggers but will not release with the CLOSE button.? I have to go to Task Manager and kill the process.
Is there a version of VARA FM for the ARM64 that I need to run instead of the x64 or x86 versions?? I dont know where to find it.
Thanks. |

Did you get the call sign for this VARA FM Gateway station from your Vara FM Winlink session channel selection list??
?
Assuming you're operating in Snohomish WA, I see lots of VARA FM stations within 20 miles of your CN87wu grid square.

I set up my Winlink Express system using the CN87wu grid square, and I didn't see K7NWS-10 on the channel list, though. Neither is it listed anywhere on the VARA FM "RMS List", as of 2/17/25.

Here's the best prospects I see on the channel list for the CN87WU grid square:

No I didn't.? In my case it is simply a plug and play to change radios.? I didn't change the drive level from the DRA-36.? The response from the VARA pings to a couple of local digis was virtually the same with both radios.? ?I Bought the THD-9000 as a test/backup for my DR-135 but I later got another used DR-135 (which is now out of production). Bob, I have been using VARA FM with my DR-135 and also a TYT TH-9000D. I added the 9 Pin D connector to the stock TH-9000D with the same DB9 pinout as the DR-135.? I have two TYT TD-9000D low cost Chinese radios and am having trouble getting them to work with VARA FM.? I thought I had this working with the Repeater Builder RIB ALINCO 9600 and the DB9 adapter cable, but apparently not.? Note that the RIM ALINCO 9600 works flawlessly with the Alinco DR-135. I have set this up on at least five units with no issues.? The TYT DB9 adapter cable from Repeater Builder is built correctly pre my continuity checks and the pinout information I have.? the TD-9000D will transmit to the gateway and the gateway responds, but VARA and Winlink do not connect. I can see receive audio on the DB9 pin 3 with a scope.? Same RIM ALINCO 9600 and computer with Winlink Express and VARA FM? that works on the DR-135.? Tried both narrow and wide.? Is anyone here having success with the TYT TD-900D? |

You are correct about the FT-991A internal sound card system not having the audio bandwidth to fully support VARA FM 'WIDE" mode, but keep in mind that VARA FM RMS Gateway (and P2P) stations configured for VARA FM WIDE will connect with VARA FM NARROW client stations.
?
Your recommendation to connect the USB sound card to the "9600 packet" audio pins of the 6-pin mini-DIN "data" port doesn't apply to the FT-991 and FT-991A radios, however...
?
When connecting an external USB sound-card rig interface device to the FT-991 / FT-991A radios, ops need to be aware that the mini-DIN6 'RTTY/DATA' connector on the back of the FT-991A does not have a dedicated "9600 packet" audio output signal, as is commonly available on the 'DATA' connector of other transceivers.
?
On the majority of radios with a mini-DIN6 'DATA' connector, pin 4 is a wide-bandwidth audio output, direct from the FM discriminator circuit. On the FT-991A, pin 4 of the mini-DIN6 'RTTY/DATA' connector is configured as the RTTY "SHIFT" input, for direct FSK keying.
?
When connecting an external USB sound-card rig interface device to the FT-991 / FT-991A, receive audio must be taken only from pin 5 ('DATA OUT'), regardless of whether the system will be used for VARA FM WIDE or VARA FM NARROW operation. Unlike other radios, the FT-991A can switch the signal routed to pin 5, depending on whether the radio is set for '1200 bps' or '9600 bps' data operation.

Icom -IC320
Hello,
?
I am trying to set up mobile Icom IC-320 radio and West Mountain Rigblaster Nomic sound card to work with 2m RMS Winlink and VARA FM.
?
The RMS Express program causes the radio to transmit and there are a sequence of "modem" sounds which are picked up by the 2m Winlink gateway. But there is "no connection"? I had a similar experience trying with a Baofeng UV-5R.
?
Has anyone had any success/experience with an IC-320 radio?
?
Thank you

Re: When starting VARA USB Keyboard wont work, only with TENTEC Jupiter as the radio
I would suggest looking at the USB device driver(s) for your hardware. I'm not talking about the standard stuff that comes in via Windows Update. Get the model number or serial number of the PC/laptop, and go to the manufacturer's website and look for hardware drivers. I've had cases were there was an updated USB driver and it did not get published via Windows Update, but applying the updated driver resolved the problem I was having. I really believe your issue here is low-level, down at the device level.

A gateway will run at full speed without the need for a license, per Jose.
However, when using Vara to send or receive your own email a license would be required to get the same effect.

Not sure how he accomplishes that but whatevs....
