Re: Optimizing VARA FM and an ID-4100 with a Digirig

Living in a valley within a larger valley, I've found, depending on the distance or obstacles between you and the gateway, you may need a different configuration of your sound settings for each of your gateways. ?I also operate two gateways a very close distance from my QTH and have very different settings when optimizing VARA FM for them from my shack. ??
?
For my personal gateways, since they are about 300 feet away, I have my main dual bander on an antenna switch and going between my outside antenna, and a dummy load.? I use the dummy load to access my personal very nearby gateways. ?For all the other gateways, I use the outdoor antenna.? ?For all gateways I regularly access, have a log of my sound settings for each remote gateway.? I reference this list to adjust the sound levels prior to using that gateway.? To get the levels, I use VARA FM's Ping features SNR value. I will adjust my output levels to maximize the SNR of the particular gateway I am using, and use my microphone levels to maximize my receiver's SNR.? I keep this list of settings associated to the individual gateway next to my radio so I can reference it when I switch to a different gateway. ? For the remote gateways for which I'm the sysop, I use this technique to keep them optimized to work the best with the primary EOC that it is designated to serve following the sound levels adjustment I just discussed.
?
Adjusting levels per gateway can be a bother, but I run a Winlink Net and usually download over 100 messages for it, so I prefer to be at the optimum for my chosen gateway. ?Doing this, I find I often find that with line of site gateways, I can periodically get VARA FM's speed level 13 (25210 bps) running on low or medium power settings.?

Optimizing VARA FM and an ID-4100 with a Digirig

After a few false starts, I got this setup working following instructions here:
?
Make sure you read the part about PTT settings. I missed that part initially and couldn't get the ID-4100 to key with PTT set to VOX.
?
Now I'm looking to optimize my throughput but I'm not quite sure how to do that. Below are some excerpts from my VARA log (both HF and FM - the HF part was for RX comparison):

?
Is it normal that VARA FM doesn't record S/N?
?
We are literally across the street from each other so I am not sure if part of it is that we're saturating the other's front end or not.
?
I do have at least one entry in the VARAHF log where HF Rx is 2682 bps. While that file doesn't record frequency, it does record S/N and 2682 bps was with an 8.2 dB S/N. So band conditions have to be just right to get 1/3 the throughput on HF that I get on VHF. It was probably also a SHARES HF frequency where there's just not a lot of noise.
?
Is there anything I can do to optimize my VARA FM setup so I get a better throughput on my end?

Something has changed since your first attempt.?

Possibly a Windows update has "stepped" on your sound control-panel settings. Make sure you have "Enhancements" ?unchecked/disabled, on the "Playback" tab of your transmit sound device, on the Windows sound control-panel, and look for any other sound settings that mey have changed since you had the system working before.
?
Check again, with a monitor radio, that you're transmitting audio bursts at increasing levels through to the ?end of the VARA FM "Auto Tune" sequence. On the VARA FM window, confirm that the needle on the 'VU' meter is between the 12:00 and 1:00 position when you're receiving noise, with the squelch open. This receive signal level is affected by both the "Recording" level on your Windows sound control-panel and the volume setting on the radio.?
?
Since your DR-185 doesn't provide the wide audio bandwidth and flat audio-frequency response necessary for effective VARA FM WIDE linke, we see more reliable operation if you set the VARA FM modem to always operate in NARROW mode. You'll still be able make solid connections with gateway stations that are configured to operate in WIDE mode... they'll automatically to NARROW mode during the negotiation phase at the beginning of the data communications session.

Re: Linux installation

Looks like Vara HF can be installed from the Pi Apps menu once Pi Apps is installed. Seems to install a bunch of dependencies along with Vara HF... but Winetricks seems to need frequent updating.

Well, I'll let you know if I make any progress (with running VarAC on my Clockwork Uconsole being my ultimate goal). I have to travel this weekend, so there might be a in my responses.

It will add a bunch of libraries. This is necessary because VARA.exe is a 32-bit, not a 64-bit application. It should also add wine32 package automatically. If not, check at winehq how to do that.

You are almost there. Then you have to create a wine prefix containing 32-bit Windows system. There are some good hints here:

The last thing is to install VARA, for instance copy VARASetup.exe into disk_c in the 32-bit Wine prefix and run something like
WINEARCH=win32 WINEPREFIX=<path-to-your-win32-prefix> VARASetup.exe
?
I have to start VARA with both WINEARCH and WINEPREFIX set, maybe if you follow the instructions from the answer at askubuntu (delete ~.wine and recreate it as 32-bit prefix) you could do away with only the WINEARCH variable.

P.S. two observations
1. starting from this week I cannot connect to any VARA RMS... Not sure what's the reason, it seems VARA is pretty quirky
2. I wanted to install VARA on a chromebook that I bought second-hand, with 16 GB eMMC disk because it can last up to 10-12 hours without charging - ideal for emcomm and other outdoor activities. Due to the necessity of installing wine32 I had to buy another chromebook (which lasts only up to 6 hours) but with 32 GB eMMC, because the minimal installation with wine32 takes about 17-18 GB (the system, hamlib, JS8Call, wine, wine32, vara, pat).?

There was a solar storm I believe on Wednesday but that wouldn't affect VARA and not ARDOP.

Re: VARA HF not connecting in excellent conditions

P.S. tested with OE3XEC, OE5XIR, DB0BES, SR3WLK, HB9AT on both 80m and 40m. The RMS is heard clearly and most of them respond immediately to the first buzz. Connection cannot be established, though. I also tried OE6XPR which uses the same frequency as DB0BES, 3600 KHz (maybe I am wrong, did not take notes, but I tried different RMS callsigns of RMS's sitting on 3600, there are about three or four in Central Europe).??
Interestingly, after unsuccessful attempt in VARA I switched to ARDOP and immediately completed a session with the same RMS that previously failed.

VARA HF not connecting in excellent conditions

Hello,?
?since about Wednesday I seem to be unable to connect to any winlink RMS using VARA HF. I can hear the initial "CQ" packet (connection request or whatever it is), swift response from the RMS, then a longer FSK packet sent from my VARA, then some relatively short response from RMS and starting from that moment I can see and hear only my station repeating REQ (it flashes in VARA panel when it is being transmitted) and after about 5 retries the connection fails on timeout.
Is it possible to see in some debug mode what do actually the two stations talk about during the initial phase? Not knowing what is going on is frustrating.
I have tried a number of RMS on 40 and 80 meters, both in the afternoon and in the evening. Their signal is strong without QSB and in the headphones it sounds "normal".
?
Thank you,
Jindra

it only shows the incoming (receive) signal.

The beacons and initial connections will always be at the slowest/simplest modulation mode. Then based on experience and amount of errors encountered, VARA will gradually increase signal complexity and speed on the following data blocks. This will cause more complex constellation patterns with more phases and amplitudes to start appearing.

The VARA Modem adapts to the signal path by changing the modulation scheme depending on conditions. Data is sent as a series of symbols, and each symbol can transmit on or more bits. The constellation diagram is an average of the states of a series of symbols. For BPSK, carries changes phase 180 degrees so you have two possible states in a symbol, i.e. one bit. This shows up as two dots 180 degrees apart. A faster display would show a thin line between the dots as the phase transitions between symbols. QPSK has four states, one in each quadrant (90 deg apart), thus two bits per symbol. 16QAM changes both amplitude and phase to map four possible states in each quadrant, 16 states total, or four bits per symbol. The data is coded so that all possible states show up nearly evenly over time. This helps keep the signal evenly spread over the available bandwidth.

This is similar to the LTE used in 4G cellular.

Thanks, that's great to hear. Really appreciate that. Hey, I was looking up 73 Linux. Does that install some of the Wine applications as part of the script?

Thanks again for your time

I need to slow down, lol.? You will need to install winetricks also, and then use winetricks to install the VB6RUN from winetricks' "Install a DLL component" section.? And, if you don't see Wine in your Linux start menu and you want it in the menu, you'll need to install wine-desktop to get it in the menu.? That's all what worked for my Linux Mint machines.? There's other ways of installing all that, but it's what worked for me.

1. Install Wine 9.0 or newer from whatever online walk-thru you can find on Google.
2. Install Winetricks
3. Install VB6RUN using Winetricks
4. Install wine-desktop if WINE doesn't show in your start menu
5. Install VARA
?
Also, I just saw where VarAC does indeed run in WINE.? Here's their page on it:
