Walker County ARES is trying to setup VARA FM to be able to use Winlink on their 991-a radios. I have been looking online for help and checking videos, I do not own a 991-A, out but there is plenty on HF but not FM.

Do you need a different cable from the USB cable that is used for VARA HF?? What mode do you select? This is a couple of the questions that I have.

They are hosting two Boy Scout Troops in a couple of weeks and would love to be able to show them how this works.

Thank you for any help.

Re: VARA Continues To Show It's Overwhelming Superiority Over AX.25 Packet

I have set up a Vara RX Igate only station. Wa5luy-11. The station is running Ui-View with Vara connected by the VSPE software on a Dell Optiplex 330 computer. The sound card is a DRA 30 connected to the same radio and antenna that my Direwolf Wa5luy-10 is running.
For the road trip test, I think that will be a good shootout between the two modes.
?
Setting up the VSPE software was done with Stephen's, WA8LMF , instructions. I did have to use the last software listed for legacy computers. Also, I had to use com port 4 instead of 8 as suggested.
?
73 and good look on the trip.

If your looking for a API for VARA, you probably need to ask the author/owner.? This is not open source.

Can't finish Install. 'Setup' freezes

After installing and ‘run as administrator’,? I can’t run ‘Setup’.?? When I click ‘settings’ and ‘setup’, the program freezes and the app screen greys out. I have to go to Task Manager to kill the app.?? Same behavior with both VARA-HF and VARA-FM.?

The? “Vara HF 4.7 Quick Guide” is no help since I can’t even get into the Setup.

Jose, EA5HVK, said:

Check if your antivirus is rejecting the TCP ports in VARA.

????????????? I recommend you to ask in this group to other VARA users:? /g/VARA-MODEM/topics

How would I ‘stop the modem’.?? My antivirus/firewall? (BitDefender) gives no notifications and shows ‘vara.exe’ as allowed.

The ‘.ini’ file shows “TCP Command Port=8300”

Other apps such as HRD, WSJT-X, etc. work fine.

Please advise.? Windows 11 (up to date) and FTDX-10.

You'd do better to move your questions to a new topic... something like "Getting VARA FM to work with a FTM-200 and SignaLink". The title of this topic ("VARA FM level of integration with top radio brands") is really unrelated to what you're trying to accomplish.
?
I will say, though, If your transmit audio level is set too high or too low, the station you're trying to connect to simply won't respond at all.
?
Since you have a hand-held you can use to monitor your transmit signal, it's fairly easy to test whether you're "in the ballpark" with your transmit level settings. The key to getting a reasonably good transmit level setting is to use the VARA FM "Auto Tune" feature.
?
If you re-submit your question on a more suitable topic, I can give some really good guidelines on using a separate hand-held with the VARA FM "Auto Tune" feature, to diagnose your issue.

Many ops have reported good results using the IC-705 for VHF/UHF FM data-communications with Winlink packet and/or Winlink VARA FM.
?
However, as discussed on the "IC-705 on VARA FM WIDE?" topic, on this (VARA-MODEM) , the built-in USB sound-card system on the IC-705 doesn't have the audio bandwidth, on the transmit channel, to support full-throughput VARA FM WIDE operation.?
?
This built-in USB sound card limitation is the same for all currently available "all band / all mode" transceivers, from any manufacturer.
?
Currently, the only way to accomplish full-throughput VARA FM WIDE operation with any VHF/UHF FM transceiver or "all band / all mode" transceiver is by using an external USB rig-interface device such as the Masters Communication DRA- series, digirig mobile, or (black transformer) SignaLink USB, interfaced to a "DATA" connector on the radio. These USB rig-interface device support a transmit audio bandwidth of 6kHz or better.?
?
Unfortunately, the IC-705 doesn't have any "DATA" connector, so there's no way to connect an external USB rig-interface device (or 9600bps packet TNC, or PACTOR modem) to this transceiver.
