Re: Yaesu FT-891: Has anyone used this radio for VARA FM?
Thanks to all for your responses. My intent is to use the radio in emergencies. On Thu, Jun 20, 2024 at 10:02?PM ve3smf via <ve3smf=[email protected]> wrote:

"new" TM-271- HOW TO CONNECT
I took a chance and purchased one of the Kenwood TM-271 online from China with the intention of adding the data connector for use with VARA.
I have the radio, but the circuit board is nothing like the ones in the posts that show how to do the connection and the PC board is not like the one in the 271 service manual. The chassis has the notch for the cable and the radio includes the menu options for 1200 or 9600. ? Has anyone figured out if / how to make the connections in these radios? The manual is in Chinese only.? I downloaded the Kenwood manual, and the menu items are all the same.? It programs with the Kenwood MCP-1A or with Chirp, and both report that it is a 271.? Any thoughts would be appreciated. KA9CAR |

Yes. ?I use the internal sound card. ?It won't support FM Wide but I'm OK with that. ?Took a bit of work to figure out all the menu settings. ?But there are several web sites with advice on digital configuration for the FT-991A. ?I use the rig for Field Day mostly, and mostly operate WSJT-X on HF. ?But the settings are the same. YES! I have been using it successfully. I use the data cable along with a separate sound dongle plugged into my laptop.? SABRENT USB Type C External Stereo Sound Adapter for Windows and Mac. Plug and play No drivers Needed. (AU-MMSC) Took some experimentation but it¡¯s working and working well.Randy West Palm Beach Amateur Radio Group? Jupiter Tequesta Repeater Group? Re: Yaesu FT-891: Has anyone used this radio for VARA FM?
Carol, The challenge with the FT-891 and VARA FM is VARA FM would only work on 10 m and 6 m bands.? In most regions, there are very few VARA FM RMS gateways operating on 10 m and 6 m bands.? There are many other transceivers which would be better suited for use on VHF/UHF bands.? What are your personal goals for use of VARA FM and what bands are being using in your region? ? 73 DE VE3SMF ? Specification: Specifications |
Re: FT-991 (non-A) FM
Thank you Chris, Noel, and Larry
Those hints were anticipated though match my initial settings.? Double checked, actually triple checked then still no modem audio exchange.? Hardware issue would be considered if it weren't for? VARA HF, FLdigi, and WSJTx HF working just fine.? The issue is isolated to VARA VHF at the moment.? Oh yes, and confirm the return to mic for voice.? I don't use voice at the moment as I am functionally deaf.?? Any more ideas anyone?? I take silence as a no.? Thanks again, Phil / K4PO |

Re: FT-991 (non-A) FM
¿ªÔÆÌåÓýI use FM Data mode for VARA FM on my 991. Set audio input for that mode to USB in the menus then you don't have to keep switching back and forth when you use FM voice. Once you get it working, save to a memory. Chris, VA1PYE On June 19, 2024 4:45:29 p.m. ADT, Marvin Penepent <pilot-1@...> wrote:

FT-991 (non-A) FM
Hey all you FT-991 VARA FM ops,
I surrender, my FT-991 based VARA HF works as expected.? My issue is with VARA FM audio throughput.? Transmit keys, but no audio passes either way.? Since HF audio works what is the FM mystery setting that this OM just can't seem to sort out.? It would seem to me the setup would be identical though it appears not so. Anyone using the plain FT-991 on VARA FM?? I need you audio setup menu settings, please. Thank You, Phil / K4PO |

¿ªÔÆÌåÓýEhhh, no. Not to put too sharp point on this bit of trivia, but ¡°bauds¡± is not English. It¡¯s ¡°Baud.¡± And not ¡°baud rate¡± either. Any wireline communicator ¡ª a breed facing extinction, to be sure ¡ª ?understands that the term baud is defined as the inverse of the unit interval ¡ª in DC signals. Old Teletype veterans understand that a 75 baud signal is called that because the unit interval (minimum length of a Mark or Space) is 13 msec. Likewise, a 45.45 baud signal has a unit interval of 22 msec. This matters (or used to matter) because it was a way of expressing the maximum DC signalling speed a given communications path could support ¡ª to provide an acceptably accurate square wave (a rise and fall time of something less than thirty percent of the unit interval) required a bandwidth of roughly five times the circuit speed, useful data when designing multi-channel (Mux) radio systems. These days, not so much. Modern modulation techniques have rendered the term obsolete for all but the most devoted Teletype and Kleinschmidt fans? This has nothing (Nothing! Said Sergeant Schulltz of Stalag 13) to do with data rate. ? To drive this completely into the ground, imagine a time clock system which receives its instructions from a central timing source ¡ª a master clock ¡ª and distributes the time-of-day pulses to the slave clocks throughout the building by means of a twisted pair of wires. Every minute, the master clock sends a pulse of 110VDC down the pair to move each controlled clockwork one minute ahead. The pulse is 12.5 milliseconds long. By definition the data rate is one bit per minute. The signaling occurs at eighty Baud.? But I could be wrong. ¡ª?
