Concerning #1, It could be because the response from the RMS Gateway is sending more data than what the client sends when starting a connection... i.e. an acknowledgment of the first transmission. What it actually being sent I have no idea. Then the gateway will send out a string of text such as "Welcome to blah blah gateway' or whatever the sysop chose. Basically the data to call a gateway is very simple, but the response is more complex.
