Thanks for the idea, but the AGC is sitting just above minimum.
I woke up last night, and realized my problem must be noisier bands on the lower frequencies.
So, I turned on the speakers this morning, and confirmed that's my problem - noise showing up as audio input on VARA (I knew I'd feel stupid).
Now, I just have to figure out how to clean that up.
