I'm also late to the party. But hope that this helps. Enclosed are my settings for the FT-991a for Packet, VARA FM, and VARA HF. Like others I'm using a Toughbook (CF-30 in my case) connected to the 991a's USB port in the back (no external TNC).

Please let me know if you have questions. I use an FT-8900r for my weekly WinLink checkins. But can switch over to the 991a if it'll help.
