Unimat Belt Source
Does anyone know where I could purchase new urethane belts to fit my Unimats?
I do have urethane belt stock but I would need to build a jig to weld some new belts up. That would entail making a jig to hold the stock and slide the two ends together while it is heated.
Is there a design I could follow to build such a jig?
Ideas are welcome.

I am very happy with belts from www.unimat-vintage-lathe.com This fellow has a lot of other stuff on his site, too.? Especially how to pack a Unimat so it won't be damaged in shipping. Charles E. "Chuck" Kinzer

I made a belt joining jig by cutting a vee groove in an old pair of pliers, heat the ends then close the pliers together,? works nicely, then use flush cutters to trim the doughnut at the join. Amazon is your friend. They sell 10, 15, 20, and 25 packs of premade belts.
Look for 227 and 341 buna-n O-rings. I bought the 227 in 1/8 width and the 341 in 3/16?width

Doug has sold me quite a few parts, belts, and a manual. Good guy to deal with. Kindly answers silly questions, too! Bill in OKC? William R. Meyers, MSgt, USAF(Ret.) I bought my belts from Doug Feistamel some years ago and have had no reason to think about them since. That said, I needed some new belts for my bicycle rollers a while ago and decided to have a go at it myself. I think I decided to just wing it before going to the trouble to make a jig just for this and ended up clamping one end in the vise, holding the other an inch away, and playing the propane torch in between until it looked ready to squash together. I'm sure it would have been cleaner with the hot knife technique, but I had a couple of feet extra and nothing to lose. Works fine. The Uni belts, being much smaller, would require more care, I guess. Tim in VT |
I make my own belts from 4 mm diameter PU endless material. The correct length is important, as the belts vary in length depending on the material used.
I use green PU material that has a roughened surface.? It is welded by bringing both ends to a doughy state with a fire torch and then pressing them together with a prism until the material has solidified. The bead is then cut off with a small electronic side cutter. It is important that the belt is then left to rest for at least 24 hours so that the cross-linking of the material has enough time to bond. Greetings Bruno ?

Hi Bruno,
?
Assuming that you live on this side of the pond as well - Europe - where do you order your PU material, who is the supplier??
?
Many thanks in advance,

Hallo Herman,
?
These belts are quite a common article.
?
I bought them from Supplimax.eu
?
This is the website:
?
Ik herinner me niet meer welke diameter ik kocht, maar eenvoudig te bepalen door de afstand tussen de opstaande zijden van de riemschijf te meten en liefst niet inspannen om wrijving te vermijden. |
Bruno,
What type of prism are talking about?
I am having a problem visualizing what the prism looks like.
Thanks, Dick
