unimat 3d model project
Hi, I just joined the group recently.? Also pretty new to the unimat stuff but I'm already enjoying this lil machine (db200/sl1000).?
I noticed some of the accessories are pretty hard to find and pricey and it made me think, why not get everything all modeled up and ready to make from scratch when/if necessary.? Has anyone started a similar project already?? I searched the group and found a couple conversations that were similar in topic, but none lead me to a link to any actual models.? Apologies if I missed one somewhere.? If no, anyone interested in working on it with me?? I was thinking like a github repo or something with step files of everything. I don't have all of the accessories (yet) but I'm going to start modeling up everything I have soon.? |
I really don¡¯t like the way github works, but I think you are on the right track. I¡¯ve been collecting 3D Unimat stuff as I find it. There are models of the tailstock and other parts available. I just searched the various sites for ¡®unimat¡¯ and some generic terms like ¡®vise¡¯ to turn up existing stuff.?
Keep us posted with your progress, hope it works out. I¡¯ve been looking for the standard Unimat tool post (the block) and so far all I have found is a drawing. That is good enough for that part though, it is so simple.? There are dial indicator holders of several varieties out there too.? Good Luck! |

Yea I use 3d printing a lot in the shop.? I just realized how I phrased my post and left out that one of the reasons I wanted to see models of the OEM unimat stuff is I use that a lot on my sherline machines, not always to make a clone of something they make, but for building my own accessories off of.? It can be pretty handy and sherline does a decent job at having models of a lot of their things.?
I'm probably going to get started this week.? I figure as long as I nail the critical dimensions, holes, machined surfaces etc, there's some flexibility in the body/painted surfaces since they're casts. Now I'm off to search thingiverse, for some reason I didn't think to look there for unimat things haha |
Something like that is what I was hoping to find for the sl1000/db200 (not even sure what to properly call this machine still).? But if its not something that's out there I'm willing to put the time in, just didn't want to do it if someone else already had lol.
Another user pointed me to the files section here.? I overlooked that section entirely.? I'll get things posted there as I go, hopefully get some feedback and see if my dimensions are correct compared to others and maybe some others can fill in some missing pieces that I won't have yet.? |
Rick, tell us what parts you are looking for.?
I¡¯m going to start a 3d printing thread where we can discuss parts and materials and maybe link to the files section. If it is OK with the management, I will start uploading models to the files section and pictures to the photo section. Yesterday I finally found the DB tailstock files. I have no idea where they came from because they have cryptic names. I knew I had saved them but couldn¡¯t find them. So, they are now renamed as what they are¡ tailstock housing and tailstock base. There is a good drawing of the quill in the files section. I¡¯m still looking for the hand wheel lead screw drawing.? |
LOL, on my iPad. I went to get them from the source so I could link to it and cannot find it. Luckily I had saved them and found them again with their cryptic names. I have now uploaded them to the 3D model folder in the files area.

I see that Carl originally posted a link to the source files for the tailstock. I would have never found them without his help.

Hey Guys, I'm late to this thread but I also would like to register my interest in a 'archive' of 3D models for unimat accessories ! I don't own one myself but go have an ax minster Sieg C0 Baby Lathe so with the right scaling or editing of the model many accessories could be useful to me also ! However I would be curious to know what file format everyone uses ? I suppose its STL if its purpose is for 3D Printing and with the right conversion that can be edited into almost any file format you could need but having trained in CAD I know that not all models are made equally. Perhaps not an issue if your just converting to STL and printing but if your converting back and then trying to edit said model then problems may arise :/ Still Interested however. I have only access to SketchUp and FreeCAD however although I would love to have free 'access' to Fusion 360 its just too pricey. Inventor 3d likewise and even Plasticity is too expensive for me :/ Kind regards, Paul

The models I'm doing I'll export as step files probably.? Not sure how many accessories I'll get done but I'm aiming to at least get the base machine fully modeled up.? Partially for my own amusement, partially to help make accessories later.?
Does fusion 360 not have its free tier anymore?? Most of the paywalls come in on the manufacturing side, modeling side was pretty wide open on the free version last I checked. Thanks for the link to the tailstock!? That was actually the part I most dreaded haha.? Between that and Rowan's drawings this is a huge head start for me.? |
Beware of the tailstock. I started working on it and it is TINY¡ less than a millimeter in all directions. Just a dot when imported into Tinkercad. Now I need to figure out how to scale it properly. I actually like it better than the original, since it has flat sides. I was going to make accessories to fit it, but now I don¡¯t know what to do. I need to work out the center to center dimension of the ways and top of ways to center of quill and go from there I guess.?

Just to follow up on my previous posts in 'Watchmaker Spindle Play", I've finished my work on cleaning up the Watchmaker Spindle I was working on.? Several people requested that while I had it disassembled, to take some pics and make some drawings.? Well my son is a Mechanical Engineer and while visiting me several weeks ago, while I had the spindle apart, he completely drew up 3D CAD models of the WW watchmaker spindle and sleeve.? He needs to do a little clean up work and will send me *.stp and *iges files along with drawings.? When I get them will post them in the files section.? Hang tight, cause it might be a little while before I get them.? He is up to his neck in work right now, and on the road a lot soo... if it's not work related, it ain't happening right now.? But promise when I get them will post them.?
