SL U-90 Motor Wiring
Hello everyone,
Completely here and tried to post last night already (I'm not sure if it's stuck in moderation, if so - sorry for the double post - or if it just didn't go anywhere). Yesterday I took my unimat home to be able to do a few bits and bobs on the balcony, and decided to finally remove the sketchy switch and lamp that someone wired in to the cable. Doing this I realised that the cable inners were very brittle and thought I'd best replace the whole cable. Opened the motor (which also had been on my to-do list for years) and was greeted by the cables inside it having been held together with electrical tape!.. I have no idea what goes where now. Picture to give you an idea:? Does anyone have a schematic for the motor or can give me a hand? I'm currently limited to things I have around the house (semi lockdown) and can't go looking for an alternative solution. Many, many thanks, Geoffrey |

Right.
I've got a few more questions at this point. - The little red lead coming from the capacitor (1.) connect to the earth/ground, right? - Is this little "lip" (marked "??") here for anything specific or is it just fairly random? - I am right in assuming that the two black wires connect to the brush holders too, together with the capacitor, yes? Haven't figured out which goes where yet. (I'm assuming the last owner had used the correct cable colours for pos/neg.. Anyway, it used to work!) Many thanks in advance! Geoffrey |

开云体育I will try to take a pic of one of my partly disassembled motors. In the meantime here is another pic by the OP of the other photo: |

开云体育1 the little red lead from the? capacitor connects to ground....seems to be soldered to the motor case. Correct, the case is earthed from your mains supply cable. 2 My motor does not have a "lip" there. Don’t worry about that. 3 the two black wires from the cap do connect to the brush holders. The two bigger black wires have clips on their ends and do connect to the brush holders: If those two bigger black wire go to the field coils then that is correct. Difficult to know which of the bigger black wires goes to which brush holder. If when you run the motor it goes in reverse then just swap those two bigger black wires ?over. I will try to amend the drawing I sent to clarify the connections. Will send it later. ? Bernard ? ? From: Pete

开云体育YELLOW dotted wires are your thicker black wires from the field coils to the brush holders (reverse these if the motor is turning in the wrong direction). BLUE dotted wires are the black wires from your capacitor to the brush holders. Which wire goes to which holder makes no difference. RED dotted wire goes to your motor frame which is earthed (grounded) via you mains supply cable. ? The two BLACK squares are your brush holders. ? Hoe it’s understandable ........ Bernard ? ? ? Hello again,
?
Many many thanks Pete & Bernard!
?
Sorry I didn't get back to you earlier, I got way busier than I had expected last week and didn't get round to doing everything that I wanted to.
?
I've wired most up now, but I'm very unsure where that I'd best attach the ground wires to the case? Ideally somewhere, where they don't get into the way of anything.
I've also never soldered anything up to something with no "direct mating area" if you know what I mean (I've done wires, obviously, and PCB boards but never a bare piece of metal).
?
I'll try to find a good spot and will let you know how it went!
?
Cheers! :) |

When I restored mine late last year I had to do a lot to the motors internals to bring it back to spec...

The screw on top of the case at the rear is what I’m on about, inside there is a bit of metal “u” shape that that screw and internal nut lock holds it in place to keep the power cable away from the rotor, subsequently the earth cable, and the brushes housing connecting cable also wraps around the screw, when tighten it holds all the earths ( brushes and mains) while the u shape grips the power cable, I hope that explanation helps more... if you no longer have the screw there it’s an easy thing to replace, the U90 motor dose not have an air vent, it’s a limited run motor (8 mins of use to 10 min cool down) only the unimat 3/4 came with the air cooled fan rotor. 开云体育Hello Lio: I use my drafts person's electric eraser to clean commutators. I use the gray eraser meant for removing ink. Notice
the grind marks from dynamic balancing. A better quality
motor. Carl.
