I too have setup to use a 24v motor with power supply and speed controller, I turned a new end plate for the motor to fit it to the motor bracket and I also made a new 3 step pulley to fit on the larger shaft size it's all still in the making at the moment but it is looking good so far. The motor was a NOS from a friend I had to replace the screws as when fitting the new end plate they came up short, and not been able to find out the rpm of the motor yet but will do soon. Another small problem I have is the shaft is 11mm so when bored out of the pulley it does not leave much to lock onto the pin going through the motor shaft have to find another way to do it. The controller I found on Amazon built it into a box and works well but it does not give out rpm only %. Phill    ?

My motor was playing up on my Unimat, so I fitted a 12v motor I had laying around that fit straight onto the bracket to get the lathe working again.
I then got a 12V 150w MY6812 scooter motor. All I had to do was add a hole on the front plate for an M5 nut and it fit onto the existing bracket.
A simple speed PWM controller was added and now I have a nice quiet Unimat. I 3D printed the pulley as I didn't want to modify the existing one.

It seems like a motor that size defeats the point of a little lathe like a Unimat, being bigger than the lathe itself. I don't care for the size of the motor on my Taig, and am considering smaller alternatives.?
On a Unimat I'd think a small 1/12-1/15hp universal motor as you often find with watchmakers lathes would be a good choice. You can often find them for around $50 and they are suited to using a speed controller, like the HF one mentioned.?

I have been running the 24vdc for years without any problems. I also switched years ago to white Buna O rings for drive belts. Cheap and I like the fact that if they need to, they can slip and save the unimat or tooling. But as of today I have not had any belt slippage using them. ?Jeff

I found two of the packages, one is " -339? Oring 70 DURO WHITE FDA NBR" and the other is " -334 ORING 70 DURO WHITE FDA NBR". These are a standard size 3/16" cross section O rings. The company name on the packages packages that I have is Jet Gasket & Seal. I got white at the time, they also come in black and red. The important data is the size -334 and -339 , and Duro 70. I got two packages of 5 and I am still using the original one. ?Jeff

I inclosed a O ring Standard chart that you can down load. I checked the Jet Gasket company's web site and I am not seeing the white O rings, they do still sell the black ones and they are $3.68 for 20 of them.

Ok, I am on a learning curve right now. It looks like the color is important, the industry uses the color of the O ring as a code to tell what it is made of. I got lucky years ago when I ordered the white ones. Here is a link to what the colors mean.

Maybe color coding O-rings would help avoid something as erroneous as placing an EP O-ring where a nitrile O-ring ought to be. The industry's answer to this was to designate black for nitrile, brown for fluorocarbon, red for Neoprene, rust for
Silicone, blue for fluorosilicone, and purple for EP.
The FDA designation means that it can be used in manufacturing places where food or drugs are processed because the Buna-n material is safe and does not leach any chemicals.

The FDA certification will make them more expensive, but at $3.68 for 20 of them, I doubt it's all that significant! I identify as a cheap bastrich, but even I won't worry about that! ;)

I got belts from Doug Feistamel at his site at
At the bottom of his home page, he describes his belts in detail saying they are polyurethane.? They happen to be orange, but it should be noted that the "industry standard" for O-Ring colors is not a hard and fast rule.? And the ones from Unimat-Vintage-Lathe don't seem to be a standard O-Ring anyway but a purpose designed belt that happens to look just like an O-Ring.
I consider these to be top quality belts.
I used to design instrumentation for deep ocean applications and used many O-Rings for sealing purposes.? There are many materials and "durometers" (hardness) and there are plenty that would not be suitable for a Unimat drive belt.? So, if you just buy some O-Ring, it might or might not be suitable.

I have some of the very old OEM ones, they used two different types, one was a twisted "fibre" tope like and the other was a similar to a mini V belt. The mini V belts look like a O ring and are rounded on the top, but they have a slight flat sides to form a V on the inside.? Jeff

And the ones from Unimat-Vintage-Lathe don't seem to be a standard O-Ring anyway but a purpose designed belt that happens to look just like an O-Ring.
I consider these to be top quality belts.
I used to design instrumentation for deep ocean applications and used many O-Rings for sealing purposes.? There are many materials and "durometers" (hardness) and there are plenty that would not be suitable for a Unimat drive belt.? So, if you just buy some O-Ring, it might or might not be suitable.

I have some of Dougs belts and also some from Toms Tool Store. Both are great quality. I bought the O ring first and experimented with each one, All worked great. I was hoping the the O rings would slip a bit if needed to act as a safety feature, I would rather have them slip then break something else. So far no slippage and they are easy to put on and remove. I have several Unimats and since I converted two of them to the 24vdc motors years ago, I rarely change belts. I also remove the belts when not using the lathes. I have inclosed a photo of the earlier belts that Unimat used. ?Jeff
