I am working a deal whereby I may actually get a Unimat SL, which would be cool as heck, but that's going to take some time, too. At least then, I'd have real reason to be a member of this group. I joined because a) I have wanted a Unimat for a long time, and b) because techniques that work on a small lathe will work on just about any lathe. The first lathe I actually laid my hands on after a 1 semester class in high school, long ago, was a Harbor Freight 7x10. Compared to the Unimats, they're a giant, but compared to the sorts of lathes you find in a real machine shop, they're still tiny.

Since I got that 7x lathe, I've also acquired a few others. I got an Atlas TH42 (10x24) lathe in good working order, and a South Bend Heavy 10L restoration project that led a hard life, and that I'm working on fixing. And my brother bought me a Smithy CB-1220XL 3-in-1 machine that I'm in the middle of getting back in running order. I also started another class in machining. Over 6 years ago. Not quite finished, but I've only been going part time for most of that time. The classroom lathes make my 10L look like a small lathe, and it weighs over 1000 pounds.?

Why do I need a 5th lathe? It's a sickness! ;) Somewhere here I have a photo of a 9mm Lugar barrel that Mert Baker made on his Unimat. I want to be able to do stuff like that! While you can use the same techniques on a bigger lathe, it's sometimes harder to do stuff on a small lathe. You have to take shallower cuts, and slower feeds, so things take more time. The bigger lathes will let you brute force it, where the smaller ones take finesse.?

Has anybody tried emailing xpylonracer@...??

They are an owner and were active in GIO as recently as late October, but it doesn't seem that they are engaged with this particular group.?

There are 3 owners of that group.??has been active on Groups.io as of at least late October.

The sixth lathe is the one where you know you have enough. Don't ask me how I know.

Before the Yahoo group shut down and before switching to groups.io, I downloaded all of the posts and pictures in case the group did not change over. But a lot of water has gone under the bridge since then. Do I still have it all, maybe?

Wow, I only have 3 lathes, although I'd like to get a small native metric machine for threading.? I'd like to say that I don't have the disease, but then I'd have to ignore my collection of oscilloscopes (Mostly Tek, numbering around 70)

Good morning Keith,

I too have been trying to join this group for a couple of months, and have my first post stuck at New Member Moderated.

?

I also have had no response whatever to various attempts to contact anybody.

Subject: [Unimat] How to contact Group Owner?

?

I've had an email from Ian Adam, who was on the old Yahoo Group years ago, and has now got back in contact. He has successfully signed in, but if he tries to send a message it gets stopped for approval by the admin, but that never happens. This has been going on for months. I relayed a message to the Group Owner, but that has not generated a reply to either of us, or any other action.

Who is the group owner, and how do we contact him/her? How many other would-be members of this group are in the same situation?

Of course it is possible, in light of recent events, that the Owner is no longer around - so then what happens?

If anyone else is similarly stuck please contact me direct. I'm not in a very good position to deal with this, but I'll try.

Does anyone know who the group owner is and how to make contact other than through the Group links?

?

Good afternoon,

?

I too have been trying to join this group for a couple of months without success, my first post is still at New Member Moderated.

?

Looking through the records it appears that Martin Pinckney is indeed the owner of the group.

?

His last active post was April the second this year. I do not know Martin and have never conversed with him but I find that very concerning.

?

Does anyone know if he is ok?

?

As an aside, GIO say they are too busy to answer any communications from anyone except group owners.

?

kindest regards,

?

I now have three contacts with the same problem. The third may have given a clue: he is trying to use this group via the old Yahoo group. I don't know if that group even exists any more or how much access it gives to Groups IO. I will look into this further with them. I think the simplest answer is for them to start again with this group and forget about Yahoo.

However, this does not explain why I got no reply when I emailed our Group Owner.

Hello again to all members

This evening I received an email from a new member whose application to join the group had not been authorised, this really is a cause for concern as reading the
posts it seems he is not alone in this situation, all I can do is apologise to those concerned and try to contact Martin to find out what his current situation is.

There are no posts awaiting moderation so if you have applied to join and have not been added to the group if you apply again I will as Joint Owner moderate your message.

I am owner of several iO groups and check in at least twice a day to view my groups, I had noticed on several occasions messages were awaiting moderation on this group but
that is true for any fairly active group whose membership is growing so didn't look in.
Since I appointed Martin as co-owner I have had my messages from this group set to Special Notices only so had not been aware of any problem, I will change my settings
to receive all messages for the immediate future.

It is only fair to await Martins reply before taking any other action such as appointing Moderators or Joint Owners, however that may have to be considered as I don't want to be
fully active on this group for health reasons.

Regards, Marcus

I run a few (very quiet) groups here so you can add me as a backup too for worst case scenarios if you wish?

Hi Neil

No he is not an owner or moderator.

Hello I subscribed the group about one year ago but??I was unable to joint the discussion for this problem. I hope now to be part of the community.
Best, Federico.?

Hi Frederico

You were approved for membership back in July which is the reason you were able to post pictures in the Photo section.

Looking forward to your input to the Group.

Marcus

I'd like to have a Unimat partially because it takes a great deal of skill to get good work out of one. If I can do good work on it, it will prove to me that I'm a better machinist than I was when I got the first lathe, which gave me a great deal of trouble. Only the 2nd class showed it wasn't the lathe that was at fault. When I got the Atlas TH42, I kept the HF 7x10 because it's a PITA to tear down from one project to do another one that you need right freaking now! It's a great size for pins and screws, and such, bushing and bearings, and the like. The Atlas is vintage 1946, and still in better shape than I am, and nearly a decade older. It also uses much of the tooling I have for the HF, and will handle longer and wider material. The SB I got for several reasons: South Bend lathes and shapers were what I first learned on in that high school class. I loved them, and wanted one of each! I'd commented on that on another board, and my friend Bill Hinkle though he could make part of my dream come true. I'd already bought a Lewis shaper from him for a really good price, and he had this Heavy 10L in his barn, and had realized he wasn't going to live long enough to fix it. The modern version of the Heavy 10 goes for about $10K these days, and a decent running 10L on Ebay is usually $3K or more. I got it for less than $1K. It does need quite a bit of restoration, but the bed looks unworn, and it included the taper attachment, two 5C collet closers, and both normal and turret tailstocks. The taper attachment and turret tailstocks both go for upwards of $400 on Ebay. I've had it for about 2 years, now, and about 1/3 of the pieces have been de-rusted. It's probably going to take a few more years. My brother bought the Smithy for me, I think it's his subtle hint he wants me to make some stuff for him. ;) And if I ever win the lottery, I will buy a brand spanking new Monarch 10EE. Just because. And a better shop to put it in. :) In my dreams!?

Beyond that, I can probably live without more lathes. Though I've known a couple of folks who had dozens...

And envied them, too!

Hi Keith

Ian Adam is an Unmoderated listed member from 2009 so there should not be any problem with him uploading messages.
