How to contact Group Owner?

I've had an email from Ian Adam, who was on the old Yahoo Group years ago, and has now got back in contact. He has successfully signed in, but if he tries to send a message it gets stopped for approval by the admin, but that never happens. This has been going on for months. I relayed a message to the Group Owner, but that has not generated a reply to either of us, or any other action.

Who is the group owner, and how do we contact him/her? How many other would-be members of this group are in the same situation?

Of course it is possible, in light of recent events, that the Owner is no longer around - so then what happens?

If anyone else is similarly stuck please contact me direct. I'm not in a very good position to deal with this, but I'll try.

Does anyone know who the group owner is and how to make contact other than through the Group links?

Keith,
Is the owner of this group Martin Pinckney?
If so I may be able to come up with a couple of email contacts.
I was intermittently in touch with him over the last few years but have had no contact in the last several months.

It sound like this is a "new user moderated" situation where a first post needs to be approved to reduce illicit accounts and spam. I admin a couple other io groups and I have no idea what recourse there is if owner is no longer active. Owner can assign alternates, but if that wasn't done...

I'll investigate and report back if I find anything.?

I have just emailed the following message?to the OWNER email.

Good day. It has been noted that new user's messages to the Unimat group are not being approved and we are seeking the original or alternate owners.

You may have been designated an owner of the group without your knowledge.? Please check out the group for more info and feel free to email?me back if I can help in any way.

I looked into the group owner forum and there is no clear process to establish a new owner if a group gets "orphaned". Groups can have multiple owners established so hopefully somebody was set up as an alternate owner and either didn't know or forgot about.

I suggest that everybody?who can log into the group via browser and see if they have admin access and maybe we can find an alternate owner of the original owner is indeed inactive.

Martin Pickney does appear to be a co-owner from messages in the archive
/g/Unimat/message/33

The other (original) owner seems to be named Marcus the the screen name Emgee Radian?

I hope we can get this sorted...

I'm not an owner or moderator of this group, but am designated to be able to post anytime. Got a "P" icon next to my name in the list of members. I don't have any access to any of the admin functions. I'm pretty much constantly logged into GIO since I co-own or moderate several other groups. I'd be willing to moderate if you folks can find one of the owners or moderators able to set those privileges, as I'm in and out of GIO constantly looking at my own groups. I'm a co-owner on Metal-Shapers-and-Planers, Mini-Lathes, Mini-Mills, 4x6bandsaw, Miniature-Machine-Tools, and 3D-Printing-for-Metal-Hobbyists, and moderate on atlas-craftsman, multimachine, and southbendmanual groups.?

I do not have a Unimat of any sort, despite wanting one and looking for one for a long time, so I don't post much here, and if I found one now, I'd have a hard time finding space for it, despite how small they are! Though I'd try! ;) I do currently have 4 other lathes, and 3 milling machines, if you count the 3-in-1 machine as one of each. If anyone has a Unimat that they'd want to trade for an HF 7x10 mini-lathe, fairly well equipped, I could be talked into it, probably. :)

I didn't remember if this group was still a free group, or upgraded to Premium. Did a very quick search of messages, and It was upgraded, and Martin is one of the co-owners. Unless one or more of them turned off their group messages, or changed email address, all co-owners & possibly moderators should be getting the owners emails. And sooner or later, GIO is going to want to be paid again.

I think I'm going to do a Role Call of my groups, and make sure everyone is alive and responding. I was a member of several of James W. Early's MLXXXXXXX mini-lathe groups back in the Yahoo days when he passed away unexpectedly. There were no other owners, and no moderators with elevated privileges, Yahoo was not at all helpful, and the groups eventually died, too. We all lost a lot of good info, as well as a good friend and great resource.

I'd hate to see that happen here, though having had multiple medical problems with my wife and self in the past 13 years that I've been active on Yahoo and Groups.io, I can certainly understand how such things can happen.?

I now have three contacts with the same problem. The third may have given a clue: he is trying to use this group via the old Yahoo group. I don't know if that group even exists any more or how much access it gives to Groups IO. I will look into this further with them. I think the simplest answer is for them to start again with this group and forget about Yahoo.

However, this does not explain why I got no reply when I emailed our Group Owner.

Yahoo now, AFAIK, is just a website reposting news from other sources. It's sometimes useful if a site is paywalled. Groups was utterly trashed.

We have now taken down all user content from the Yahoo Groups website. However, we will continue to accept users¡¯ requests for their data until January 31, 2020, and will ensure these have been fulfilled prior to deleting the data.

For additional support, users can email YahooGroupsEscalations@... and our team will troubleshoot any issues.

Apparently the mail system still works but I never used it.

Well, I don't seem to be able to get any further forward than identifying that there is a problem and it is probably due to our Group Owner(s) not being currently active, for whatever reason. If someone who has more direct contact with Groups IO can raise the question of what to do next with them, we? might get somewhere. Obviously, if new members cannot participate fully the group will simply fade away.

When the great upheaval happened the MZ group I'm on struggled to transfer over, but then did by some of us contributing to the cost. The guy who actually did the work then put down the first twenty contributors (including me) as owners, or something like that. Now I know why.

I'm now up to four people who have tried to join in recent months and have found that their messages are not getting through because they are still being moderated. They all seem like reasonable people with something to contribute, and it is a pity they are not able to get more involved.

What can we do?

Old Toolmaker have you had any luck tracking down Martin Pickney?? Does anybody here know who Marcus is??

They seem to be the only owners and without them, I am afraid the group could be orphaned. I will dig deeper in GIO to see if I can ID a contact who might be able to help.

Ok, I posted the following to the Group Managers Forum and to the GIO support email. Fingers crossed.

hello GIO owners!

A group I am a member of but not an owner of seems to have lost the two owners that current members are aware of.
/g/Unimat

Emails to [email protected] are going unanswered and new member contributions are not getting moderated.

I have looked for resolutions for such abandoned groups but have not found any process for addressing this matter.

Any help is greatly appreciated as there is a bunch of great information archived in the group and many members willing to assume administrative responsibilities.

best regards

Here is a response on Group Managers forum to a recent query about a similarly orphaned group.

Randy,

Is there any way to have the group transferred to me as the
owner.
There is no established procedure for making a new owner of a group. It is incumbent on the group's creator to promote additional owners, or risk that the group will become orphaned in the event of their own incapacity.

If there was only one owner, and that person cannot be reached, then your options are very limited. If there is a possibility of another owner existing, or a moderator with more permissions than you have, you might try sending an email to the group's +owner address a time or two to see if you get any response.

Failing that, you can contact [email protected] and provide all the details in support of your request.

This is the sort of contact we need. If the worst comes to the worst would it be possible to transfer everything over to a new group, as was done to set this one up? Then we could make sure there are plenty of owners, or whatever is needed, to ensure continuity in future. The problem than would be shutting down the old group (this one) so that we didn't finish up with two running side by side.

This may not go through as I don¡¯t recall having posted to this group in the past. A search for Martin Pickney turned up 10 people by that name in the USA. One is recently deceased; Martin J Pickney, residence Baton Rouge, LA, passed away on 3 May 2021. Where did this groups Martin live.

My memory says Florida...
Search Martin Florida...

The Search results confirms Florida is correct... but I am worried...I hope someone can find him.
As anyone in the group of closer proximity, I'm only finding one Martin P business contact at Marco Island....

I am a co-owner of a couple of Groups.io and our largest group has multiple owners so there are no succession issues
if I have an early exit stage left...

I do hope the owners of our Unimat group will choose other member to moderate and a potential owner,?
as it would be terrible lose the history of the group's posts.

That was Martin Pickney. Do you still have his email address? I don't. Even checked my paypal account.?

I did a search in my Paypal, It was Martin Pinckney at?mdupreno1@...? on November 2 2020.
