Union Hacksaw Frame

I acquired an old Union hacksaw frame some years ago having a wood turned handle. I like the feel of the single wood handle. The saw frame is shorter than most modern hack saws but is very well balanced and is comfortable to use. In use it feels like a fret saw.

I have one of those, it is the 10" model. Simple to make blades for it, Just cut off a modern one to size and drill the hole.

Some years ago I went to a proper village fete, where there was a stall selling second hand tools. I picked up a small Record vice for ?5, and also noticed a bunch of hacksaws - five for ?5. At the time I thought - who needs five hacksaws? But halfway home I realised - don't keep changing the blade on your saw when you need it to be coarser or finer - just have, say, three hacksaws with coarse. medium and fine blades, just sat there ready and waiting. I went back the following year and they were back on the same stall again, so I bought them. Three for me, two for my brother. One was a pistol grip eclipse, but the others have straight handles like the Union frames. The pistol grip is better for cutting through bars and such, but the straight grip is better when cutting at angles. Also the straight frames can take 8", 10" and 12" blades (I think), the same type as I was brought up on at school.
