Unimat Hand Crank
Was a hand crank standard issue with the original Unimat???
If not, I will need to produce one for my Unimat.
In the past I made one for my 7x16 mini lathe.

开云体育Hi: Some folks have made a hand crank for the spindle, make thread cutting easier, but slower. It should be easy to make one, just thread it M12x1 to replace the spindle nut. Do provide a way of clamping the thread so backing up does not loosen the spindle. I made this hand crank for a small drill press to make tapping easier: Carl. On 3/28/2025 8:12 AM, Quinn Golden via

What I am describing is hand crank for the Unimat main spindle to facilitate low speed single point threading. I have used this same method on my 7”x 11 mini lathe. I use a threaded rod for a thread master.

Maybe just a lock nut? Neil On Sat., Mar. 29, 2025, 5:56 p.m. OldToolmaker via , <old_toolmaker=[email protected]> wrote:

He's talking about hand-cranking the spindle to avoid crashing the cutter into the chuck while threading a shaft or screw. Like the mini-lathes, with a stock motor it's far too easy to have the Unimat lathe turning way too fast for comfort when threading to a shoulder. Hand-cranking gives complete control over the process at the cost of speed.? William R. Meyers, MSgt, USAF(Ret.) Aphorisms to live by: Good judgement comes from experience. 开云体育Hi Neil: There are only about 10mm of exposed thread with the standard nut off. My VW Bug had lock nuts on the front spindles that were split and had a clamping screw for closing the split. That is how I would build a spindle crank. (also that is how I clamped the hand crank on the drill press pulley) Perhaps a 12mm x 25mm x 150mm bar of steel, tap one end for the spindle, leaving enough to slit and add a clamping screw cross ways. Then I would tap holes for a hand knob ever 15mm from the other end. Use the far end for power and near the spindle for speed. Carl: PS: I seldom
single point thread, I keep a stock pile of threaded rod. On 3/29/2025 10:51 PM, Neil Morrison

This was a suggested design from a group member - don't know if it was ever constructed - based on the threading idea of Doug Collinge.

And Collinge's original article on threading with the UNIMAT DB/SL -

OK so I can see how you could tap with that, but how would you Single Point??

开云体育I always do single point by hand on the Unimat. It is slow, especially if threading steel, but the parts we’re making are usually so tiny that the overall time isn’t that long. Not as bad as having to make a piece over because you screwed it up. LOLBest Regards John On Apr 1, 2025, at 11:32?AM, Andrei via groups.io <calciu1@...> wrote:

You can also use a nut and bolt having the desired thread lead. Metric or Imperial your choice.
