My first Unimat

My dad gave me my first Unimat about 50 years ago. It was given to him by an old guy. My dad considered it a toy. It had all the bells and whistles. I still have it today and it stills serves me well.

I can see how somebody could consider it a "toy" compared to how many other machines are constructed.? Many hobbyists have never had the chance to use some high end precision machinery so they don't know what that "feels" like.? But this "toy" brought machining capability at an affordable price to a lot of model builders and, I'm sure, some professional shops that might have also had larger machines.

Like most "combo" machines, it tends to be less staller than individual purpose-built single function machines.? But having even a minimal milling capability, or drilling capability, as examples, is a huge step up from not having any at all.? And at least a step up from putting a milling attachment on a lathe cross slide.

But unlike some other low-cost hobbyist lathes from "back in the day", the Unimat had a very long run.? It may have cost a bit more, but provided way more capability meaning it had a very good value (a different thing than just a good price).

And it's hard to argue with results.? Some amazing work has been done.? Some of it was Bob Darwin making masters for model railroad detail parts for the Kemtron company who made lost wax castings.? Here is a photo that shows his recommended tools from an article he wrote.
