I have built a small Quick Change Tool Post for my Unimat

I like to occupy my thoughts with things pertaining to the Unimat instead of reading about all the political BS these days.

That would probably be a good thing to to for most of us, these days. It would probably drop my blood pressure 10 points. Bill in OKC? William R. Meyers, MSgt, USAF(Ret.) The only reason I know anything is because I've done it wrong enough times to START to know better. Expect in one hand, expectorate in the other. See which one gets full first.

There's no reason I can see where you couldn't make it on a Unimat. I have the drawings, and it's in my project queue. I do have two Unimats, so intend to have one set up as? lathe, and one as? mill, which should speed things up a bit. Even so it's not going to be a quick project. I expect to try hacksawing some of the waste out instead milling all the dovetails out entirely. If I can't hold tolerances with the hacksaw, it will slow down the roughing quite a bit. I've only used much larger lathes and mills to this point, so I could be mistaken. But I do have a riser block, so I should be able to work larger materiall than the stock Unimats. Mine are alloy, a DB & SL. I do know my way around hacksaw and files, and many of the old machines were built with those and the odd chisel... And I have learned a bit of patience over the years. ;)

mill constructed the dovetails by making a separate plate with the bevels and then attaching it to the body with hefty screws. He did the same sort of thing for the tool holders. This removes the need for a mill and dovetail cutters, and on a micro-lathe should be plenty strong. Peter, you are correct,I didn¡¯t machine the small QC Toolpost on the Unimat but it can be done on the Unimat. I still have the cutters I used. It definitely would slower on the Unimat. I had a surface grinder when I made the prototype and I used machinable prehard 4140 Steel.

Elliot, there is nothing wrong with laminating the QC Toolpost and I have done just that many times in my 50 year career. It works just fine. There is more than one way to skin a cat so to speak!

Way back in Trade School one of my projects was to chisel a keyway in a shaft. It was tedious but it turned out great. That was the old way of getting the job done.
I am happy I had that experience.
I have a lot of good memories of the old days. That old training served to build a source of inspiration that can be recalled and applied to projects today. Reminds me of the old Blacksmith in the town I grew up in. I will never forget watching him work at his forge and shoeing horses. Man I must be getting old.
