Is it possible to separate Unimat3 from SL/DB
Can the Unimat DB/SL forum be separated from the Unimat 3 Forum? Even though all are technically Unimats it is sometimes difficult to follow as the discussion is mixed together. Just wondering!

There are hash tags set up for the group to tag U3, U3 motors, and DB200, but I'm not seeing much evidence they get used. I don't? have any idea how to use them, for that matter.? I normally read and reply to the groups I'm involved with through email in my browser. So I don't know if the hash tags can be used through email or if you need to be on the group website to use them. I will have to look into it and find out, but that probably isn't going to happen today.? I got much of my workshop space back a couple days ago, and I'm moving stuff back in there and trying to get it all set up.? Bill in OKC? William R. Meyers, MSgt, USAF(Ret.) There were two Groups.io groups for Unimat 3: One is Unimat3. The owner seems to have died? No one can add anyone etc it seems. I set up Unimat-Three as an alternative. I guess I should invite the other Unimat3 group members to move and add some more moderators to it. Any thoughts? Personally I¡¯m fine with it the way it is, and I wouldn¡¯t want to move to a different forum. I¡¯m a U3 owner and user.
?
Trying to split the group might be decisive and counterproductive in the long run, and many of the discussions on machining aren¡¯t specific to any model, or are of interest to owners of any model.
?
So my vote would be to ¡®leave as is¡¯. It¡¯s not ideal but perfectly workable. BTW I use the forum through the web (browser) interface, where you can easily view all the groups.io groups that you¡¯ve signed up to. |
I¡¯m obviously a late comer to the party, but this is called the ¡®Unimat¡¯ group, not the ¡®Unimat DB/SL¡¯ group¡ and the Files, Photos etc contain loads of documents, over many years, pertaining to every sort of Unimat.
?
So I don¡¯t really understand how a split could be beneficial.
?
Maybe there is some underlying ¡®history¡¯ that I¡¯m not aware of¡ ? |
there did use to be a unimat 3 group as well as this one, but it sort of died a death when nobody could contact the group owner.

Splintering the group is a sure way to kill both versions, or at least cripple this one and kill the U3 variety.?
If there were a million users, it would work, but there are barely enough users now to get a few messages per day. Just look at the group stats.?

actually now I look I find 2 unimat 3 groups, neither active with posts, so probably best to just leave things as they are, as we certainly wouldnt want to confuse matters with a third group, neither of the above seem to have posts, and on one the last post is querying whether there was a moderator / owner

¿ªÔÆÌåÓýHello,?For my part, it¡¯s more logical (and productive) to keep Unimat 200/SL and U3 united. Notably, the contrary will result in increased duplication of identical posts, fractured archival information and a loss of synergy... Hashtags have a section to themselves in the web interface menu - here is a screenshot of all of them for those using email only. As you can see, they aren't much used judging by the number of topics tagged with each one.
?
They could certainly be used more to flag that a post is about a certain model, but I suspect that folks will still wander off topic (in any possible direction!). That's certainly not unique to this forum - it happens on all the other ones I'm on as well (groups.io and others)... irritating / annoying if you're trying to get answers, or focus on specific areas, but really just the rich tapestry of life, and the interaction of well-meaning folks. That's enough philosophising for now!

Hello:

I am also a late comer, at least in comparison with the people who have been around since the Yahoo days.
That said, as a Unimat 3 owner I fully agree with the quoted opinions, to which I would like to add mine for the board member's consideration:
?
Keeping a bulletin board working and in order takes work, work that is usually not seen and most times not appreciated.
It requires dedication, patience, a great deal of common sense and a cool head.
ie: the stuff that usually comes with life experience.
?
I say that both as a member/former member of many groups I have benefited from / contributed to since ~1996.?
?
Dividing the Unimat group will only add more work to what is needed now to keep it running.
ie: just the sharing out posts into different categories would be a mammoth sized task.
?
In my view, the nature of (what we could call) the Unimat ecosystem is not a very populated one, the main reason being that Unimats (of the type we deal with here) are no longer manufactured and as a result have a steadily decreasing user base.
?
I think that it's closest cousin (Sieg C0) is no longer manufactured as a unit either, but I am not sure.
Quite a few Sieg C0 parts are still available and will fit perfectly well in the U3 but with prices close/equal to Emco U3 prices. ?
eg: carriage screw replacement
?
It is inevitable that the number of Unimat users / contributors to this board will eventually get to the point of being too few to justify its existence.
Just look at the statistics cited in the post by @Peter ashby.
?
I believe there is strength in numbers so I'd say that we should try to make the best of that.
?
One thing I would like to suggest:
?
From what I gather, the Unimat 3 group is all but dead in the water, don't know what happened to the (!) Unimat3 group.
Being a moderated group, there have been no new postings to Unimat 3 for the longest while.
They are stuck somewhere, awaiting moderation from an inexistent moderator.
?
Unimat group management might want to consider contacting groups.io management (must be someone to talk to somewhere) to see if all posts Unimat 3 group can be moved to the Unimat group and then close it down for lack of activity.
?
Best,
?

I also do not have a problem with keeping it as is. most postings will list what model it is for anyways. And many of the postings are about using the lathes and that can apply to both models. ?Jeff

Thanks Bill,
At least I am not alone. I don¡¯t have a clue how to use hash tags or what they are.
Frankly, I prefer the old system. But that is just my preference.

I have been a member of all three groups way back when they were yahoo groups and I believe the moderators of both U3 groups disapeared. So members decided to migrate to just the Unimat Group. I know that some of us have Sherlines as well as Unimat 3/4, SeigC0, Combi 218, As well as the DB/SL variants. We can all learn something even if it is the other type of lathe. Believe me when say this group is well mannered, informed and respectful unlike some others I'm on. As someone said it ain't broken. |
