Thanks Keith, that¡¯s really useful information and opens up some distinct possibilities. A Googling I shall go!

Somewhere I have a set of change wheels for inch threads on the Basic (also a 1 mm pitch lead screw) and clever things are done using 17 tooth wheels. It gets very close to the correct pitch - last time I calculated it the error was something like 0.1 mm over the length of the lathe. Unfortunately the gears are 0.75 Mod, which is not common, so sorting out further pitches is a problem. I can't find the charts at the moment. On another lathe I saw lots of pitches using a 19 tooth wheel, but that was for making metric pitches with a ?" pitch lead screw.

A quick example: with a 1 mm pitch screw (25.4 tpi) using a drive of 17:18 gives a pitch of 23.988888 tpi - near enough for 24 tpi, certainly for a short length of engagement. Playing with the numbers should yield other inch pitches. Allowing for a compound gear somewhere in the drive should make many more pitches available. The game is to find lots of pitches that only require a limited number of wheels.

Hi SMJ

I use the Unimat 3? as a? 3d? jig holder? and my jig is in a 3D solid format using? my 3D program , but it should b great to also? have the whole? thing in the? 3D !!

I have a 3D cad/Cam? program PIC 3.3 based on the ACIS? core? (using the *.SAT extension )? that do not support step , do you have the possibilities to export the? fantastic U3 files in that format , (using SAT version 7 works )

It should be? great? to use the native solid model instead of the stl? version that I can import (see attached files )

Is that something that You can help? me? with ?

That's great Peter, thanks very much.

Threadcutting on a Unimat 3

Please excuse the flurry of messages from me - symptomatic of an enthusistic newbie I think!

I've been intrigued by the various threadcutting messages and docs, particularly the solutions as alternatives to the 150.250 Emco Threading Attachment.

Some questions...

1) I really like the ingenuity and versatility of the simple 'nut and bolt' concept (example are the 'Mert Baker¡¯s Unimat Theading Method' message thread and the 'uni-threading.pdf' on the last page of the 'Files' section). I have a Unimat 3 though, and this design looks to be intended for the earlier Unimats with a sliding quill feed. Would this work on a Unimat 3 by slackening the headstock locking bolt? Or would there be too much play? (I've also seen the 'Simple thread cutting on a Unimat' pdf but this requires a threaded hole in the work).

2) If 1) isn't possible on the Unimat 3 then the 'change gears' style system (as in 'Unimat 3 Threading Attachment' pdf) would be the option. Ideally I'd like to be able to cut imperial threads as well but (as I understand it) this would require a 127 tooth wheel, which at MOD 1 couldn't possibly fit on a plate between the headstock and lead screw shafts. I suppose it would be possible to make a set of wheels at a smaller MOD (with a different plate design). Has anyone got imperial threading working on a change gear system, and if so, how did you do it? (I don't have a 3D printer BTW).

Thanks,
Peter

Thanks Mike, I have seen (and downloaded) the PDF but there are some dimensions missing from the drawing (and I think I read that some are wrong - radius instead of diameter or suchlike). Having the file in a DXF format would be great, hopefully someone has Autocad or a similar weighty program and can do an export.

I saw a post of yours with the finished components laid out on top of a printout. To a novice like me this is a great help and aid to understanding the finished parts. Do you have larger versions of the photos by any chance? I've been reading all the various 'threading' threads (ha ha), I've had a good rummage in 'Files' and also perused 'Photos' (but not dipped into all the folders there).

Thanks,
Peter

Re: ALERT eBay¡¯s Latest Attempt to Fleece Buyers and Sellers

All human enterprises seem to have some "bad apples."? And in the case of eBay, I'm sure many have seen inaccurate listings merely because the seller didn't know anything about the subject matter (such as model railroad engines)."? I've been burned once by a deliberate scammer.? A couple of times something innocently not as described, a couple of times something badly packed.? And even a couple of times where a dishonest buyer scammed me (and I certainly DO block them.)? I have dealt with over 4,000 other eBayers, have almost 5,000 feedbacks (buyers and sellers) which means something north of 5,000 transactions since some don't bother to leave feedback.? I would consider the percentage of malfeasance, at least in my case, as an exceptionally low percentage.? In fact, I find it amazing how well eBay works since eBay is wide open to everybody with a vast range of skills, or lack thereof, and wildly different levels of business acumen, or lack thereof.

But most everybody who transacts a lot on eBay will have some anecdotal story of grief.? Just like somebody will always have a shipping grief anecdote (USPS, UPS, FED EX, take your pick).

As a buyer, what I like about PayPal is that they will go to bat for me if the seller doesn't respond to an issue; PayPal's entire business model involves keeping me happy, especially by protecting my credit card info, so I will continue to use them and pay the fee. EBay's business is facilitating transactions, and yes this includes protecting credit card info; but it is not the one and only reason for their existence as it is for PayPal. It looks like eBay is trying to muscle back into the payment territory it left to PayPal when it was spun out.

Can't comment as a seller. I tend to use Facebook groups specific to whatever the sale item is and where many of the buyers are geographically close by, so we can meet in person somewhere (coffee shop), the buyer can evaluate the goods, and pay if he likes them.?

Re: ALERT eBay¡¯s Latest Attempt to Fleece Buyers and Sellers

You can use eBay AND pay by PayPal for a purchase on eBay.

Usually, eBay significantly favors buyers over sellers (one of the complaints sellers have about how eBay has evolved.)? But I can't comment on a particular case I don't know about, and I also don't know if the buyer escalated the issue within eBay.
