Re: Unimat 3 belting tightness
There is a formula for correct belt tightness. I can't remember off hand, but it is something like, belt circumference minus 10% This will change between different manufacturers and different grades

Unimat 3 belting tightness
Hello: I make the belts for my U3 from *?* 5mm green textured PU, material I found on Aliexpress. Works fine and slips much less since I turned a new spindle pulley in Al to replace the lousy

Re: Show us yer boring tools!
If you have inserts with dull edges or chips, all you have to do is touch the top surface to a diamond composite wheel. If you apply a small angle, you can easily create a razor sharp edge and top

Re: Show us yer boring tools!
I think I have said before, in relation to drilling tungsten, the guys at Guhring recommended using HSS with cobalt in the alloy as it takes a sharper edge. So if you see toolbits with cobalt, grab

Re: Show us yer boring tools!
You need to turn at higher RPF when using carbide inserts and you need to take a more aggressive cut for the carbide to do its job as intended. That being said, many mini-lathes use carbide to good

Re: Show us yer boring tools!
I have found for years that Carbide inserts are "dull' compared to properly sharpened HSS. My old shop teacher from 50 years ago used to show how a newly hones HSS bit would shave a sliver from your

When I first got into lathes, ie. first Unimat.? ?I purchased a set of "Carbide" tools in 1/4" shanks from Harbor Freight, actually two sets one short shank and one longer shank.? I also purchased

Thanks Bill for the reply. Purchasing the indexable cutters was just laziness really, to ¡®get started¡¯. I doubt if I¡¯ll attempt sharpening them. Of course one thing leads to another (it seems to

Re: Show us yer boring tools!
Peter, you can sharpen the carbide inserts, but that defeats the purpose of buying them for most people. Which is changing out the worn or damaged carbide inserts to get your cutting edge back where

Re: Show us yer boring tools!
Tamra, if you're buying high speed steel tool blanks, they will not lose their temper when grinding. They can supposedly be run red hot and still cut, though I've never tried it. I do grind by hand

Re: Show us yer boring tools!
Thanks Tamra for the replies and the detail, that's useful. I've bought a small diamond cup wheel specifically for this (I'll try it on the U3 spindle), but also have a grinder from my woodworking

Did you try sharpening it? Tamra

Re: Show us yer boring tools!
I haven't made a boring tool, I usually buy my tool bits, with the exception of 1/12th scale turnings. It is easier to grind the tool bit for micro turnings using a? 1/8" tool bit and stacking two of

Re: Please, show pictures of how you attach dial indicator to Unimat DB/SL.
I think he was talking about the extended 8mm cross-slide guide rails in the picture that are used to mount the dial indicator, not the 12mm main rails.

Re: How to mount faceplate to spindle? Screw directly or mount on backplate?
You will want a small relief the length of the shoulder on the spindle.

Aren't the guides 12mm? going down to 8mm will turn it into a spaghetti lathe... ________________________________ Sent: Thursday, August 3, 2023 12:10 PM To: [email protected] <[email protected]>

Wish I'd seen these before I cut down the 8mm linear guide rod I used to replace the rails on my carriage...? But I do still have one Unimat that hasn't gotten the new rails yet. So all is not
