Part of the secret of Gun drills is the cooling. Not only does it cool the tool tip, but it aids in the removal of the chips. It is the buildup of chips that contributes to a twist drill wandering.

What diameter hole was it? If it was relatively long you need to make sure you have a good quality drill. For very long holes you might need an unusual drill type - I think worm drills can help, also

Loosen off the head stock and the tail stock clamp a bar in each chuck then lock the head and tail stock take out the bar and try a cut. Phill
