ER 16 collet chuck Unimat DB.
#db200
In my search for a collet chuck device for my Unimat DB, I have unfortunately not found what I was looking for. The problem is the ES collets, which are almost impossible to get. I have made my own collet device for ER 16 collets. I first pre-machined the basic body from 42CrMo4 heat-treated steel on the large lathe. Both the fit for the holder and the taper seat for the collet. The thread was turned in the same clamping as the collet taper. I then set the headstock of the Unimat to the collet taper and turned it on the small Unimat by only a few 1/10 mm. this way the taper runs with a maximum deflection of 1.5/100 mm. I bought the clamping nut from the Chinaman.
You can find the pictures on my homepage.

Re: "Basic Technical Information" U3 book?
There are a lot of older books on lathes and milling machines that are of use to folks using not very modern machine tools. HSS is a relative newcomer to machining. It's only been around a bit over 120 years or so... Before that, high carbon tool steel was the way to go. And HCTS makes for much sharper cutting tools. Not so good for tool steels, but very good for softer metals, like aluminum and brass/bronze. Search for Paul N. Hasluck, for example, on Archive.org, and you'll find a treasury of information. On the newer books, I use several of the downloading sites to check out materials on machining, and then buy hardcopy books of? the good ones. John R. Walker has a pretty good one called Machining Fundamentals. I've got the 1973 edition, which I believe is the textbook my first machining class used my senior year of high school.?

I have learnt an amazing amount from this forum. I had not encountered collets before and now I can't remember the last time I used my chuck. Also, I have been heartened to read about grinding tools in HSS. I remember the baby steps I took during my time at the grinder. I soon realised there was a queue behind me. Later I noticed that the rest of my class were using it with trepidation. Then, guided by posts in this forum, I don't fuss over the cooling to grinding ratio and bash on to get the right angles. I made some large scale wooden examples to guide me, and others, when I taught school kids laterly.

I have my father's copy of "The amateur's lathe" by Lawrence H Sparey, published by the Drysdale press in 1948, the year of my birth. I would commend it. Re: "Basic Technical Information" U3 book?
James, one other option is Microsoft OneNote. Do a screen capture of the text, Mozilla's new PDF reader has one built in, and paste it into Microsoft OneNote, then use the built in Object Character Recognition (OCR) though Microsoft now simply calls it copy text from picture. Here is one I did some time ago.

Re: "Basic Technical Information" U3 book?
Hi Keith:
The big
change from the 1930's to 1960's was carbide tooling. It took
more horsepower than flat belts could transfer and the shift to
"V" belts began. Also carbide didn't like stopping in a cut, and
would chip the cutting edge.

OK, now I see the content (in whatever language) I see this
is NOT the same as other EMCO publications - it is more of a

of the lathe, but compressing into about 50 pages what was
covered in about 300 in my school textbooks! For those who know
very little of these things it would give a hint of the broader
subject. I tried feeding pages to Google Translate, but it won't
work with scanned PDFs. It might work for JPGs or other such
files.
?
When I was at school in the late 1960s our metalwork master,
Jack Part, gave me a textbook to read while I was off ill, and
asked for my opinion of it. I reckoned it was very good,
especially compared to the 1930s books we had up till then, so
he ordered a set for the class. I often wish I still had a copy,
as the technology was modern for its time, just before modern
techniques such as interchangeable tip tools and NC methods were
coming in, so just the right level for our the home workshops.
I'm not sure that modern textbooks are as useful, but it would
be worth looking around for something covering general workshop
techniques.

Amazing! Thanks for posting that, and so quickly!
To push my luck, in the back of DJ Laidlaw-Dickson's "The Book of the Unimat" the bibliography lists these two titles:
"Emco Unimat Basic Course Instruction Manual" "Emco Programmed Exercises Emco-Unimat Small Universal Machine Tool"
Anyone have scanned copies of these too?
Thanks again!

Does anyone have a copy of the book "Basic Technical Information and Practical Applications of the Unimat 3"?
?
I saw it in the "HobbyProducts_(NeilsCompressed).pdf" catalog from the files section, but can't find much at all about it online. It seems to have only been mentioned once in this group.
?
If anyone has a PDF I'd be grateful. Or if you have a physical copy, I'd be interested in helping you get it scanned.
?
Thanks!

Re: "Basic Technical Information" U3 book?
I've looked through the PDFs I have found over the years - I think they are all in the Files section - and I don't see it. Looking through some old pictures there is a not much clearer image of it which reveals it was an EMCO publication, so I would assume it is much the same as the various instruction books/booklets they released over the years. The biggest of those has an overall description of the lathe, and some basics on how to use it, and similar instructions for various accessories. Then it has parts lists for everything, and the diagrams show how they all fit together. I think the one you are looking for is the same thing, maybe without the parts lists, in a fancy cover. It's definitely a lot thinner than the usual instruction book.

I don't say give up looking, but the various publications you can find in the Files should give you a pretty good guide to the Unimat 3, along with other small lathes. I suspect this extra one will not add to the sum total of your knowledge.
