Re: Quill Feed Gear?

Thanks to all for your input!

Re: Quill Feed Gear?

I think the small black removeable gear wheel comes with the fine feed, the handle comes with the mill. So someone somewhere is missing the gear wheel for their fine feed.

Re: Quill Feed Gear?

Then the two pieces bolt on to the side of the milling head to provide the fine feed, like this:
?
?
Loosening the bolt allows rear of the silver portion to move upwards, which disengages the fine feed gearing.

(On mine a previous owner has epoxied a piece of hex profile stuff into the front adjuster, which works very well actually. Saves an allen key falling out, and easy to use a small spanner on it).

Re: Quill Feed Gear?

Yes it is it goes with this bit.

Note the reason for bushing out the head stock as well was to enable me to bore out the carriage from through the headstock leadscrew hole. I moved the carriage up as close to the headstock as I could get it then clamped it. I then drilled through from the headstock leadscrew hole with the lathe held vertically with a pillar drill ...thus keeping everything nicely inline.

Sorry....... this should show what you are interested in?

The leadscrew in operation has an extra bit on the other side of the bush collar, which I have slotted and added a clamp to. This provides a nice way of adjusting backlash. Again not for the faint hearted. Its a bit sad in a way the unimat has been under covers for several years unused....perhaps time to pass on. (I live in Brisbane Australia)

Re: Unimat Sl/DB Lathe Adjustable Handwheels/Dials

We have talked a lot about handwheels and Unimat leadscrew conversions.? Here is one that I got from someone's collection.? It belonged to Charlie Brommer, who made model train parts as CHB.? This has been made into inch, using what looks like 1/4-20.? There is a tapped steel block attached to the side of the carriage, and one on the crosslide.? I imagine the idea was that it might be reconverted at some time.? Otherwise you would need to try 5/16-20, which is unusual.
?
After looking at all of this, my conclusion is that if you want inch, get a Sherline if you can at all afford it.? Check the site each month for discounts.? Sherline heads come in threaded or collet.? The vertical column is superior to the Unimat.

Yes I did do a replacement threaded lead screw as part of a threading setup that I made. Not for the faint hearted ! I ended up bushing both the carriage and the headstock. I now have 4 leadscrews two metric(1mm thread pitch LR and RH threading) and two imperial with similar threading. The "normal" thread is a LH 1mm pitch. I needed a RH thread to do threading due to direction reversal.?image0.jpeg

The bushes were made out of "oil-lite" note the notch on the edge of each bush which ...with a small allen screw located the bush in the carriage.

We have gone on for some time on this subject.
Are there photos/instructions anywhere as to how to convert the lead and cross-slide screws to inch type?? The Unimat lead screw is 8mm.? Do you use a 5/16 replacement with an odd 20 thread?? Or do you have to go with 1/4-20 and make threaded plug adapters?? ?Has anyone here done this conversion and can provide details???
?

Re: Unimat Sl/DB Lathe Adjustable Handwheels/Dials

Do the same with the cross slide. Then all will be in sync.

Better yet,
install an Imperial lead screw and matching nut to be absolutely on the money.

Hi Gang:

I remember the consignment area and have bought and sold stuff there. It was different from the clearance area.

Here is a map of the Expo Center:

Grounds Map

The view is south at the top.

You enter by the Main Entrance, to the left is the West Hall that has had live auctions in the past. They say the auctions will be totally "on line" this year??

The Center Hall has food, Little Machines and Village Press.

The North Hall has vendors around the walls and display tables with compressed air for model steam engines. One year they had the RC boat pond too. Lots of Unimat supplies, watchmakers lathes and cutting tools.

I'll a little fuzzy on the East and Southeast Halls. One was Consignment Sales. You follow the path and pull the stickers from what you want, pay on the way out. The other hall may have been what I call the clearance area. It was just pallets of mixed junk. Pick up what you want and take it to the check-out table where they give you a low ball price. (I never said "too much" to their offer) The clearance area may have been in the pole barns??

In the connecting hallways I saw a pallet box of magazines, free for the taking.

The BrightBill Barn and Arena had more displays, live steam trains, vendors and the "Dirt Pile" where 1:12 RC trucks and construction equipment built an interstate interchange over the two days.

So lots more to see than I can even remember. This will be my 5th visit!

See you there!

Carl.

The show opens 9am Friday.? Now if you want to buy junk from consignment, be there early to get the best bargains.
In Vendors, the Little Machine Shop is there.? If you want something specific, call them.
