Re: Mistery Unimat 3 with interesting modifications
Look at the Mini-Mills group, which I own, and can send you an invite to join, if interested. They have a few things about add powerfeeds to mills, which can be applied with a little skull sweat to lathes. They tend to use a coupler that can disconnect the motor from the feed screw when needed for hand positioning. Ought to be some stuff like that in the 7x12 mini-lathe group. I don't think my mini-lathe group has much of that info, but it does have a bunch of modifications for 7x mini-lathes by Ralph Patterson. Some of that might be a good inspiration for you, even though 7x machines are much larger than the Unimats, even the U3.? Bill in OKC William R. Meyers, MSgt, USAF(Ret.) Aphorisms to live by: Good judgement comes from experience. Experience comes from bad judgement.? SEMPER GUMBY! Physics doesn't care about your schedule. The only reason I know anything is because I've done it wrong enough times to START to know better. Expect in one hand, expectorate in the other. See which one gets full first.

Yes, so do I.
But it is rather a hassle to use.
Belts (o'rings actually) stretch too easily and slip, interrupting the cut.
Even if you use the right OEM spec. ie: 2-222/N674-70
Are you looking at a servo motor like those used for turning the U3 to CNC duty?
Or something like a Johnson type RS-555/775/895 with gear reduction?
?
It would have to be an arrangement allowing manual use of the carriage feed when not in use.

Re: Saw blades for the Emco Unimat jig saw accessory
Saw blades for the Unimat fret saw are available in most big box stores such as Menards and Home Depot. ?Also known as coping saw blades.

Re: Mistery Unimat 3 with interesting modifications
Neil,? many thanks for the link to the mags, this is something I have been interested in doing for my U3 that i am restoring although I do have a Emco power feed on mine but you have to change the belt around to change direction so have been drawing up a way of fitting a DC motor to it to get left and right movement, and I also came across another article in one of the mags for fitting a camera to view the lathe whilst working it (eye sight getting as old as me now).
?
Many thanks to all that found this information to help us very pleased.

Re: Knife tools
John,
I understand your approach to tooling and that works for you and is great.
I on the other hand enjoy grinding tools and making cutters. Different strokes for different folks. The only cutters I buy are spiral flute end mills and taps& dies.
I also grind my own single flute cutters used for engraving.

Re: Mistery Unimat 3 with interesting modifications
If I've done it right you should be able to download both mags here. If not, I'll have to try again!! The link expires on Nov 29th. Neil ----- On Fri, Nov 22, 2024 at 10:44?AM Clive via <cliveadams23=[email protected]> wrote:

Re: Mistery Unimat 3 with interesting modifications
Julius and John,? You're welcome to the articles. The PDFs are of individual issues so rather than trying to screenshot the articles it's easier to send the whole issue - who knows; there might be some other articles of interest within the PDFs . . .? Don't want to sound dense but how do I email individual group members . . . ??? Clive |

As luck would have it ...Indeed ...
The issue with the "Unimat 3 Split Nut Lead Screw Clutch" article is from 07/2005 (#107 p.44) and issue with the "Friction Dial Handwheels for the Unimat 3" article (photo I posted) is from 02/2006 (#112 p.17).

That said: would it be too much to ask for a scan of just those articles?

Re: Honing turning tools
In Trade School I learned how to grind a lathe tool free hand on a pedestal grinder. I still use this skill today. We learned to hand grind to within one degree of angle and maintain a single facet. Practice is all it takes. I also was taught how to grind twist drill bits by hand. Learn this skill and you will never need a cutter grinder.
All things are possible!!
