Re: Axminster/Sieg C0 Baby Lathe Compound Toolpost ?
A common "weapon of choice" is a machinist's protractor.? It is one of the typical items you might find in a machinist's tool chest. Square head: Or Round head: You reference surfaces on the tool post to other parts of the lathe, work piece, whatever as needed to determine the angle.? It is usually a good idea to use these on Chinese baby, micro, or mini lathes in any case because their markings are notoriously inaccurate anyway. Once you can set an angle using a machinist protractor (and there are other angle measuring devices out there and some of them more deluxe) you could set it to zero and carve in a zero mark. Hey guys, another slightly off-group post. Sorry. It is lathe related though so please forgive me ! :) So i have an Axmisnter/Sieg C0 Baby Lathe and it came with a compound toolpost that is supposed to allow you to set it for cutting tapers, chamfers etc. You basically need to remove the existing toolpost and put this on on in its place. Its simple enough to do as the toolposts for these lathes are secured via a simple tee nut. The compound toolpost locates in a circular recess above/in the t slot and rotates around this pivot point. However while there is a, kinda, index of the degrees screwed onto the rear of the toolpost dovetail there is no corresponding 'Zero' mark on the crosslide to set the toolpost too ! So how do i set it up to some arbitrary angle like 25 degrees ? Its available on the index but what do i reference it too ! ? Hope someone can help. Cheers and Kind Regards.

Re: UNIMAT 3 Watchmaker precision package
I wonder if the Unimat tool rest came before or after the WR Smith tool rest.? I don't know when the WR Smith T Rest was made, or when Sherline started selling it... before my time with a lathe.
No unimat 3 for me... Nice group of tools Herman - congratulations on your new acquisition(s). ? And...I had no problems downloading the photos from the first post :-). Tamra |
Re: UNIMAT 3 Watchmaker precision package
Herman,?
The flipover tool post with the adjustable height I picked one up at a sale, I was told it was off a Pultra 50 lathe together with three tiny micrometre's, a two way tool post and an angle gauge, I have to try fitting it to my Unimat yet. I also found two small rotary tables in clean condition another job to do. A box of gear wheels I don't know what they are from or what teeth they are, I have a lot to do. Regards Phill? |
Re: UNIMAT 3 Watchmaker precision package
Glad you found them, Phill!
?
BTW - Ebay currently has a that is not the UNIMAT 3 accessory but one that looks a lot like it, except for the base which in the case of the UNIMAT 3 accessory is mounted directly on the bed, whereas this one has a post that is height adjustable. Seller is based in MN, USA and selling price is US$ 80.?

The files are there, just a level up. Sort by created date and they're the newest files in the list (until someone else uploads something, anyway).

UNIMAT 3 Watchmaker precision package
Good day,
A few weeks ago I acquired a number of items of the UNIMAT 3 Watchmaker Precision Package that seems to have been introduced around August 1983. Along with the watchmaker disc, the hand toolrest and the colletholder (without the Schaublin/Wolfensberger or Bergion B8 collets .. ) came a number of pages in the? EMCO style that shows the 4 items included in the watchmaker precision package, plus exploded views of each item.? I scanned these pages and put them in this? new folder - UNIMAT 3 watchmaker precision package Now still looking for the single toolholder, which I might probably just as well try to produce myself.? |
Re: DB/SL Belt Sizes?
Thank you, good information, however I am not mucking up my soldering iron when I can buy silicone o-rings on ebay for ~$10 for two 5 packs (seller oringsandmore). After buying many o rings in the wrong size, here are the -227 and -237 o-rings on my lathe (no slow speed attachment to try, sorry).
The 1/8" 3.2 mm cord (-2xx) seems to fit better than 3/16" (recommended above (-341). I also included a picture of it with a -241 (same diameter as -341, what it came with) only using two pulleys. My large pulleys are od: 8.6 cm spindle, 4.2 cm motor. I stopped the spindle with both configurations (having trouble with tailstock tension) and the belts did not slip. |

Keith - where can you get tiny (.5mm tip) centre drills in the UK please? I could do with one when drilling and reaming .97mm holes in small train wheels.I only use Dormer or Guhring for precision work like that, and they're not cheap. I had a look around and came up with Ebay (UK) Item 115952491255 (cheapest), 126419613824, 165136650221. These are all 0.8 mm tips, which will be less likely to break than 0.5 mm - as I have discovered. Also at Cromwell tools: ? (0.5 mm) ? (Sherwood, 0.8 mm) And the ultimate collection from Drill Services, from 0.3 mm on up. The prices look steep but the common ones are not so bad. See the range: When I was trying to drill accurate 1.0 mm holes in brass I found it best to start with a 0.9 mm drill and then follow with a good quality 1.0 mm drill. This gave a 0.99 mm hole, which just needed a light cut with a hand reamer to get a nice fit. When I tried to drill the right size (since the drills always cut oversize) I tried 0.96 and 0.97 mm, but the hole size depended on which size of brass bar I was drilling. Doing it in two stages gave much more consistent results, and the second drill does not cut oversize. I may have 0.96 & 0.97 drills spare if you want to try them. Contact at keithsangus (at) gmail.com for further discussion of you like. |
Re: Countersinking brass
Thanks, just ordered one (and a gear puller). I'm not too worried about delicate, the last job on the Unimat involved drilling .4mm holes. Paul B.

Re: Unimat DB200 Adjustments
I discovered my problem and It was the hand crank. It has a nut on the end that likes to wind off. I will come up with a solution.
