That's exactly?what they are. There is a piece missing, which is the doming block (or blocks, in most cases).?

A full new set at Harbor Freight is less than 40 bucks. I would not pay much for this incomplete set.?

Looks like they could be for beating metal to a dome shape… but I have no idea. They were pictured with a lathe so probably metal-working related.

Re: Off Topic measuring units

I may disagree, 0 is the temperature of your perfect whiskey, 100 your perfect tea!

Later the scale was redefined against water to the scale that we know now.

Some very interesting points here, but I should make some observations.

With temperature, Fahrenheit’s scale was based on the coldest temperature that he could achieve using a mixture of salt and ice. He then decided to ‘pin’ an upper value as an average human body temperature which he called 100 (from my school days) or 90, later redefined as 96 (Wikipedia). Why these values? Who knows. Later the scale was redefined against water to the scale that we know now.

The metric system used a centigrade temperature scale based on Anders Celsius’ work since neither 10 nor 1000 would suit particularly. It was not named Celsius because his temperature scale was upside down! 100 degrees was ice and zero was steam. After Celsius died Carolus Linnaeus suggested inverting the scale and both versions existed ‘in hardware’ for a while until Linnaeus’ version won the day. In !948 it was formally renamed the Celsius scale.

All the temperature scales were highly imperfect because boiling and freezing points of water are irrevocably affected by the ambient pressure. Calibrate your thermometer up a mountain and it will be wrong at sea level.

Some units have a ‘fixed’ reference point below which you cannot go:

Temperature: Absolute zero

Pressure: Perfect vacuum

Mass: Perfect vacuum (I’ll leave you to work out the rest)

But from those reference points the magnitude of the units can be any size that is accepted by convention and usefulness.

What I find particularly interesting is that as our ability to measure has improved, our ability to comprehend and use these improvements has diminished. How many of us use a caesium clock, know how to use Planck’s constant to measure mass or Boltzmann’s constant to measure temperature?

Bring back the thumb I say!

Yes, the spindle height is greater. But it does use some of the same accessories. I don't recall which ones.

Hello Manuel:

Welcome to the group. I am ashamed to say my only language is English. I know just a bit of French, and really should learn Spanish, as many of my neighbors speak it. I just turned 70 and worked as a toolmaker / tool design engineer and then retired from Bosch. Sorry, your photo didn't come through, perhaps try again.

Looking forward to more of your stories.

Carl.

Re: Headstock spindle spring

Hello Martin:

I never use the spring even when using the Unimat as a drill press. 6mm is just too much stroke to give up.

I have looked at boring a hole in the head stock for an internal coil spring.

As an aside, I have the sensitive finger drill chuck for 3mm and smaller drills. ( I've drilled 0.2 mm holes in steel with it ) It has an internal spring, that I remove because I like the feel better without it.

Well, I think Carl you are referring to lathe use. I don't use a quill spring on the Unimat I use as a lathe.

I have a separate one set up as a vertical drill press / mill. I think it would be a little awkward not having the quill spring on that machine.

Re: Opinions Sought (Cross-Posted)

I had that nameplate on a previous SL in England. I don't think it is anything unusual.

Tenía esa placa en un SL anterior en Inglaterra. No creo que sea nada inusual.

Re: DC Motor for unimat SL

Yes, I used a 130 W motor, and that was fine. The difference between 120 and 130W hardly matters.

I use a 12v 120W motor for my SL and it's more powerful than the original motor.

24v DC x 120W should be more than enough power, unless you're really pushing the SL.

My question is would the 120W scooter motor do the job or do I need the 150W version?

Gracias, Senora! Tried to do that on my phone, but kept getting error messages about too many words. Finally gave up. After about 2 minutes of troubles. I was having a rough night.

And the greeting used up most of my Spanish. Once upon a time I had more, but it seems to be evaporating out of my remaining brain tissue.

Does the Compact 5 take the Unimat 3 accessories that fit on the bed? ?The prism looks to be the same profile.

Re: Opinions Sought (Cross-Posted)

I think in a previous response I included the below link to a page of Unimat name plates from the Unimat section at lathes.co.uk.

If the subject is name plates, you might send them a good photo of yours, and of their lathe, so they can add it to their site.

On their home page near the bottom, is "Make Contact".

Also, if the question is about the name plate, could you provide a close up photo.
