The original meaning of the word connoted just onwards in time or in space, for example “the illness progressed until he died”. ? Perhaps the more apt quote for our times might be “ The computerization of all things progressed until the creation of Artificial Intelligence”.

Re: Another Unimat SL listed on Shop Goodwill

A word about communicating to such seller about how to pack...

At Doug Feistamel's site here:

He has a comment "SPECIAL NOTE:? Shipping the Unimat".

He points out that a lot get damaged in shipping because they were safely disassembled and packed when new, but when assembled bad things can happen.

Doug suggests telling the seller to disassemble it to ship it like it was intended to be shpiped.? I doubt very many sellers will really want to do that even if asked.? However, it might be a good idea to at least tell them to pack it so tightly that it CANNOT move.? Because if it can, when handwheels and such strike something, like the inside of a wooden box, the machine will get damaged.

Re: tailstock end of Unimat alloy bed...

Back in the Day, Tom's Tool Store used to sell a kit with the extended ways and a cut off tail stock section. I think it was mostly extended for wood working and not metal. We sometimes forget the they offered a lot of model building and wood working accessories for the unimat, Table saw (2 versions), Wood lathe rests (2), Lathe dog, Lathe tools,Jig saw(2) Planer, Shaper etc.

arguably, one could accomplish a similar result using the extra-long Unimat accessory way bars and place the tailstock on the other side of the end-of-bed.

I have made several sets sets of way bars from Thomson linear precision ground and hard chrome plated. I made a special fixture for drilling the cross holes with carbide spade drills to bolt down the way bars. I will probably follow though with this as soon as I get my shop relocated and set up.

Re: tailstock end of Unimat alloy bed...

I don't have, nor have I ever seen the extended way bars? from Emco, but I made a replacement set of way bars from chromed 12mm linear guide rod, and cut them down to match the original way bars for the 1st Unimat. I've got a pair of 600mm long, 12mm? linear guide rods coming. Should be here Wednesday. I'm not going to be using the full length, I don't believe, but it won't hurt me to have a bit more stock for my pile, either. I believe I'll see if I can get 12" between centers. IIRC, I used 300mm linear guide rods for the stock-sized ways. Just using extended way bars hanging out loose at the end might be OK, but I knew where a cut down bed was, more or less, and it's on it's way, too. They're maybe not as rare as I thought, but they're not in production anymore, either, so didn't want to cut another one down. Photo I took of my SL after I fit the new way bars to it, and before I cut them down I could move the ends of the bars pretty easily. For just parking the tailstock, that's probably alright, but I'd like to be able to use it, if possible. Still might not work. As Andrei noted, the 12mm way bars aren't the most rigid things in the world.?

So we'll see if it's practical. And if not, I've got spiffy new way bars on the DB, as well, and it didn't cost me a great deal to figure things out.?
