Re: Sherline Versus Unimat
I have both SL/db and U3 models. I also have long bed 16” Sherline with factory dros.? You can add 1” riser blocks at head and tail and cross slide. This then almost swings 6”. I have this setup.? Full sets of ww8 collets and closer are available.? Sherline is my choice for best.? On Sun, Dec 22, 2024 at 9:58?PM OldToolmaker via <old_toolmaker=[email protected]> wrote:

Basic Sherline is marginally more expensive than U3 in like new condition (to make fair comparison), but Sherline has better motor and drive train already.
Once you start adding accessories U3 will cost you more.
An underappreciated feature of Sherline is Morse Taper in both head and tailstock, which adds world of possibilities, such as inexpensive third party CR collet holder, etc.

Just looking at options between Unimat and Sherline Lathe. Which one is better for small work? I have the Unimat. The Unimat is no longer produced. The Sherline is still produced and has an active following in the micro machining realm. The Sherline also
has all kinds attachments and is quite expensive.

Re: Jewelers Loupe Head Band?
Being short sighted I found that all these magnifiers did was to cancel out my glasses (about -4,-5) so I got a pair made with plus lenses (+2,+3) with all the astigmatism dealt with, and they allow me to do really close work, but are no good for looking around the room. Cost less than a decent magnifier though. |
Re: Jewelers Loupe Head Band?
I like the clip on watchmakers eye glass magnifier the best. I used that extensively when I worked as a Toolmaker. The magnifier can be quickly flipped up and out of the way when not in use.

Re: Unimat 3 Mill/Drill Attachment Question
FWIW, my recent experiences on eBay are if you put a watch on an item, or let it sit in your shopping cart, you will often get a reduced offer. I find it most often on "But it now" with "Make offer." They know you are interested, but for whatever reason, aren't buying or making an offer. The reduced offer is often better than what I may have been considering.
?
I do it, watch it or put in cart, most often with items I would like to have, but haven't moved into my need to have category.? Then if the price is closer to what I'm willing to spend, I make a purchase. If it's something like this item where I'm not 100% sure I know what I'm getting, I often don't make the purchase. |
Re: Unimat 3 Mill/Drill Attachment Question
I think you’re right Peter, it was probably just a short term offer.?
They come up all the time on eBay.?
?
cost a matter of production scale I imagine.?
after all Blocker 4 F-35’s will only be 80 million as opposed to the first 1000 units costing over 100 million per! ?
?
which I had paid attention, I probably would’ve bought one. … the Uni accessory…?
?
He makes good stuff based on past purchases.?

Re: Unimat 3 Mill/Drill Attachment Question
I thought afterwards maybe they had made somebody a short-term offer type listing…
?
Seems a lot of money though considering you don’t get a milling head, but I guess everything is expensive these days. I wouldn’t like to be running a business in the current financial climate. |
Re: Unimat 3 Mill/Drill Attachment Question
This is a Unimat 3 vertical milling and drilling attachment.

Re: Jewelers Loupe Head Band?
开云体育If you use the optivisor then take a look at the Quasar Lighting System. It fits over the front of the lens plate & has a LEDs top & bottom on each end & the centre. It gets rid of shadows very well. I had to
see a dermatologist some years ago & he was using the
optivisor. I did find that the wires sometimes pulled a bit so I put a plug & socket on - eBay has ones for DC power connectors that have screw connections if you don't want to solder but they are quite big & clunky. It also allows me to plug into a plug pack if I am working at the one place for a long time.

Re: Unimat 3 Mill/Drill Attachment Question
I think this is a milling column / mount assembly manufactured (or at least marketed) by jjg-tools in Wales. They have a range of U3 add-ons, ball turners and the like.
Looks like you would still need the U3 milling head from an original assembly, so it appears to be an ‘upgrade’ for owners of the original equipment. ?
After recent discussions it would be interesting to know what the play is in the alignment (groove) feature. |
Unimat 3 Mill/Drill Attachment Question
I have a discount offer from an eBay seller for a mill/drill attachment I put a watch on just to see what it would go for. It's different from others listed and I don't know if it's different item with the wrong name, or simply missing components the seller may be unaware of. The price just dropped to $200 USD from Pounds with $44 USD shipping. Appreciate the education.
