Re: New or pre-used
开云体育Hi Peter,That looks like a great steer, as for me restore means get back in service.? I'll search out the 24v options. Many thanks, John 8 Nov 2024 07:24:42 Peter Brooks <peter@...>:

Re: New or pre-used
Unless you are going for a frozen-in-time completely accurate restoration I’d use a 24v (most likely scooter) motor. You’d need a transformer / speed controller as well but the motors are quiet, powerful enough and don’t have a duty cycle.
?
They’re readily available (ebay for instance), and there are lots of posts on this forum about them. I used a 150W one - it’s great! |
Re: Unimat motor
Hi Dick, Could you please describe how you use the 24v motor and Unimat to do power tapping? Just asking for a friend... Cheers, James

The beauty of this is that I now have variable speed and directional control as well as a very quiet motor. Direcinal control allows me to use power tapping on a production basis.
I will never go back to using a U90 motor again. For years we used to power tap holes using ?Bridgport vertical mill do to tapping.
Same principle here.

New or pre-used
I'm looking to restore my SL, but need a motor.?
?
PJToolmakers comes up top in a web search for new motors, but everything on their site shows out of stock, the same as three years ago when I emailed to go on their waiting list.? No reply to contact form, can't find a phone no or business address.
?
Is PJT the only UK source for new motors?? Are they UK?
?
There are motors on eBay, but what am I getting into with pre-used?!
?
Observations welcome. John |

开云体育I have a picture of that tool holder and blade in my 1980 Machinex 5 accessory catalog.? It is part of the Machinex 5 tool system designed by American Edelstaal for the Machinex 5 lathe.? My lathe came with the complete tool set including left and right tool holders, boring bar, inserts and wrenches.? Re: Emco-Lux adjustable tool post/adjustable lantern post
It looks very similar to the "Lantern" or "American" style tool posts that were installed on probably millions of lathes in the USA in the past century. They work very well for most people, and are more versatile than a tool block or QCTP for some operations. There are quite a few things the tool block or QCTP are better for if you're doing production work. IMHO, any well equipped shop should have both.? The proper Lantern style has a dished washer and rocker to fit it that allows adjusting the angle of the cutting edge to the work. That's both advantage and disadvantage. You don't have to grind tools to specific angles for different materials, but it's also very difficult, or more accurately impossible, to get a repeatable angle. If you're working near the limits of the lathes material size it's of great benefit sometimes, but it can also greatly reduce rigidity.? All my lathes have, or will have both by the time I'm done. My Atlas TH42 came with a lantern tool post missing the rocker. I filed one out of 7/16" (11mm) keystock. It's not perfect, but works. New or NOS rockers for that lathe are currently about $25-$30 plus shipping on ebay.com. A piece of keystock in that size is half that or less. For a Unimat sized lantern tool post 6-10mm keystone should be less costly in money... YMMV! HTH! Bill in OKC? William R. Meyers, MSgt, USAF(Ret.) Aphorisms to live by: Good judgement comes from experience. Experience comes from bad judgement.? SEMPER GUMBY! Physics doesn't care about your schedule. The only reason I know anything is because I've done it wrong enough times to START to know better. Expect in one hand, expectorate in the other. See which one gets full first.

Last September, one of these was for sale on Ebay and Mr. Pete has one video () explaining how he went about adapting an incomplete such tool post. Apparently, this "Emco-Lux" toolpost has never been very common - I never saw one thus far, and references are isolated - like .

Re: Unimat motor
So you have the U90 motor.
A wiring diagram can be found here...

This page specifically mentions marking upon reassembly and reassembling the case the same way it was assembled originally.

There is a complete topic on this site about wiring the U90.

Re: Unimat motor
On AC motors just reversing the power wires will do nothing except potentially exposing you to an electric shock because you reversed the line and neutral wires (This is not necessarily an issue on cords with non polarized AC plugs).
?
There are several types of motors used on Unimats, it would be nice to know exactly which type of motor you rebuilt.
?
Generally...
The only way I know to reverse the rotation direction is to reverse the wires to the rotor armature winding (the brushes).
Did you disconnect and reattach any wires inside the motor?
?
In the picture below the brushes would be located between the field windings (marked W1, W2, W3, W4) and the rotor armature (marked Rotor and Rotor1).

Ron, there are members with good knowledge of electricity and electronics.?
I was able to point to the short because I had?a motor that did the same and I had to dump it because the rewinding fees were more expensive than buying a replacement.?

it still runs CCW.? Any advice would be appreciated.
