Hi Gang:
High heat when drilling or counter sinking is a symptom of lack of cutting clearance. I always drill the clearance hole before the counter sink, most are not center cutting.?
Center drills are available with the same cone angle as flat head screws.

I bought some K&S brass bar and found it was a pig to drill. A bit of a job to start off, but after a bit I got it to work fine?
I now have belts for any combination including the power feed

I've bought more than just belts from him. Good guy to deal with, and answers questions by email quick! I've spent a couple hundred dollars with him, and consider every dime of it well spent! Got just about everything I could need to completely overhaul both of my Unimats.

i happened on one of these, gov surplus. It had Nevada Bureau of Mines stickers and under that is carved USBM Spec. It is fan cooled, 3450 rpm capacitor motor. I am wondering if the pulleys are different to achieve the same spindle speeds or if these turn slower (just posted about o-ring sizes and mine may have been different). Also hoping this is a 100% duty cycle motor. I saw the? capacitor motor is listed as standard on the earliest DB200, below link. Mine looks like a later model due to the centering pin for the headstock (rather than the slot and key). Perhaps there was a special run for the US government?

I hope to have it finished soon, just working on jig to assemble all the little pieces in a perpendicular manner.? Who wants a wonky brass bed?? Not me! It is hot & humid for the next 10 days so I don't know if this is going to get done with this weather.  Tamra

Hi Tamra, no I gave it a quick sharpen with a diamond hone but no difference really... The screw head is a about 8mm across, so it's a fair bit of metal to take out.
The brass gets hot enought to scorch the plywood I was supporting it with, I thought for a minute I was going to have a fire!
So I'll buy a new countersink, a single flute one if I can find it. I've had plenty of experience countersinking wood but metal is something else. Quite a surface area I suppose.
Your tiny brass bed sounds like a tricky job!? I hope you'll post a pic when you get it finished.
(Funny story - we had a doll's house years ago, and had bought some bits and pieces for it, including wallpaper printed on A4 sheets. A friend asked 'Do you cut it into strips to hang it?' Ha ha ha, we've had many a laugh about that over the years :-)

I sent a replacement that did.? Almost a year later the lost package came back with a return to sender marking.? So about 100 sold.? None lost.? Many people (including me) still use it.? I have? some aluminium tool plate discs 12" diameter, I got them on ebay when I needed a 12" pulley, the seller was a local company to me that made roulette? tables, when I went to collect my 10 12" discs? 1 1/2" thick, I couldn't help but notice the 24" discs in their scrap bin. The aluminium tool plate has been machined flat from the factory, as evidenced by the machining marks on the surface. So if I were in need of a flat surface to mount my unimat, that would be the route I would choose, mine is currently mounted on a section of worktop, which is plenty? flat enough for my usage. Peter?

I wanted a different motor for my taig, and older, quieter motor, as I'm not exceptionally fond of the Marathon Motor that I have..and the seller was a kind retired (from the AF) machinist... we had a fun conversation about tools and he assumed that I was buying for my husband... and he mentioned his son has some Unimat accessories... we got on the conversation of surface plates; He asked me to follow him and he said what is the idea size?? and I truly think 12x18 is the perfect size... I was gifted one this past Wednesday.? It needs a vat of rust remover, but it was actually 12x18!? So no machining cast iron will be in my future, but a large qty of rust remover may do the job. I wanted cast iron for a magnetic dial indicator --- this one is steel, so no aluminum plates are in my future at the present time. I hope to be back to using the Unimat this week. Tamra
