Re: unimat 3d model project

Just to follow up on my previous posts in 'Watchmaker Spindle Play", I've finished my work on cleaning up the Watchmaker Spindle I was working on.? Several people requested that while I had it disassembled, to take some pics and make some drawings.? Well my son is a Mechanical Engineer and while visiting me several weeks ago, while I had the spindle apart, he completely drew up 3D CAD models of the WW watchmaker spindle and sleeve.? He needs to do a little clean up work and will send me *.stp and *iges files along with drawings.? When I get them will post them in the files section.? Hang tight, cause it might be a little while before I get them.? He is up to his neck in work right now, and on the road a lot soo... if it's not work related, it ain't happening right now.? But promise when I get them will post them.?

Re: unimat 3d model project

Beware of the tailstock. I started working on it and it is TINY¡ less than a millimeter in all directions. Just a dot when imported into Tinkercad. Now I need to figure out how to scale it properly. I actually like it better than the original, since it has flat sides. I was going to make accessories to fit it, but now I don¡¯t know what to do. I need to work out the center to center dimension of the ways and top of ways to center of quill and go from there I guess.?

Re: unimat 3d model project

The models I'm doing I'll export as step files probably.? Not sure how many accessories I'll get done but I'm aiming to at least get the base machine fully modeled up.? Partially for my own amusement, partially to help make accessories later.?

Does fusion 360 not have its free tier anymore?? Most of the paywalls come in on the manufacturing side, modeling side was pretty wide open on the free version last I checked.

Thanks for the link to the tailstock!? That was actually the part I most dreaded haha.?

Between that and Rowan's drawings this is a huge head start for me.?

Re: unimat 3d model project

Hey Guys, I'm late to this thread but I also would like to register my interest in a 'archive' of 3D models for unimat accessories ! I don't own one myself but go have an ax minster Sieg C0 Baby Lathe so with the right scaling or editing of the model many accessories could be useful to me also ! However I would be curious to know what file format everyone uses ? I suppose its STL if its purpose is for 3D Printing and with the right conversion that can be edited into almost any file format you could need but having trained in CAD I know that not all models are made equally. Perhaps not an issue if your just converting to STL and printing but if your converting back and then trying to edit said model then problems may arise :/ Still Interested however. I have only access to SketchUp and FreeCAD however although I would love to have free 'access' to Fusion 360 its just too pricey. Inventor 3d likewise and even Plasticity is too expensive for me :/

Kind regards,

Paul

Re: Machining 3d prints

Forgive me for all the replies, I sure wish we could edit posts. I know this is not a forum, oh well.?

Yes, Rick, I agree. I think that many of the parts for the machine could be printed or made of softer material. I am considering making an entire tailstock, just because. I¡¯m looking at making the quill out of aluminum. Aluminum quill in a PLA+ headstock. The screw will be steel I think, again, just because.?
Lots of the projects that the little lathes make are made from brass and aluminum, and for me, now, plastic. Should be a good fit.?

Oh, another note on the thing I just made. That is a standard Unimat cross slide lead screw and hand wheel. Because I had it. I did order a 5mm lead screw and nut for this but decided to use the Unimat part. A few changes in hole size would allow the nice little chinesium lead screw to work.?

Re: Machining 3d prints

Yea chonky prints tend to do that.? petg resists that (for me) better than pla just from better bed adhesion, but its not as rigid either.

You might have inspired me to try some 3d printed parts on this machine.? From what I gather so far its fairly weak so 3d printed tool holders/posts might be more than sufficient.? My machining hobby in general started years ago with a mpcnc (mostly printed cnc)

Re: Machining 3d prints

Eric, these prints are my first experiments with PLA+. I needed it for another project that requires more strength than regular PLA. The specs for PLA+ really don¡¯t exist apparently, each maker doing his own thing. But it seems to be consensus that the plus is much stronger. And this thing is solid plastic, no air space at all inside. ?

Re: Machining 3d prints

Oh, next to install the threaded reinforcements and the threaded inserts for the gib screws and make the gib.?

Re: Machining 3d prints

Thanks Rick.?
That whole thing was an experiment. I¡¯ve always wanted a compound rest for the Unimat and they are just stupid expensive. So, this is headed for that goal, to have a relatively cheap alternative to the metal one. (Unimat 3 part)

The only reason I had to machine these was because the printer and I conspired to have them warp on the bottom. All the other surfaces shown are as-printed. The bottom should have been that good also, but I messed up the printing parameters. The top of the moving part on the tool is the ¡®bottom¡¯ of the print, hence it got machined also.?

Stay tuned, I want to print the new top part that will include 0AX quick change tool holder points.?

Re: Machining 3d prints

Looks great!
Almost seems like Delrin with the machining marks in it.
I have used PLA but never PLA+ I'll have to look into the differences.

Looks like a good start.

Please stop the off topic nonsense. I am trying hard not to be nasty about this.?

So, the left hand tap came today and I made more plastic fuzz by finishing the bottom of the main part. I think this thing can be useful, but I¡¯m not sure what for.?

Re: Machining 3d prints

No idea why I called that a vice.? smh

Re: Machining 3d prints

I kinda like the idea of machining 3d prints to true them up.? That vice looks great!

May turn up some useful stuff.?

Re: Need Unimat DB/SL parts or accessories?

I¡¯m looking for the dimensions of this tailstock part. So far, no luck. The threads are 5mm and 8mm x 1 left. I need the diameter of the area where the bushing goes and lengths of each of the areas. Also, there is a ¡®bushing¡¯ in there.?
If someone finds the drawings or can measure an existing set of parts it would be appreciated. I can¡¯t find my original tailstock!?

Re: unimat 3d model project

Oh wow, Roman if you're still out there, your drawings are fantastic and I thank you.? Just got to the cross slide one and this is the level of detail I was wanting to have to model the full machine up with.

Re: unimat 3d model project

lol I just finally spotted Roman's drawings/files too, those will be a big help.? Sorry guys, not sure why I'm struggling to internet so hard on this subject.

Re: unimat 3d model project

LOL, on my iPad. I went to get them from the source so I could link to it and cannot find it. Luckily I had saved them and found them again with their cryptic names. I have now uploaded them to the 3D model folder in the files area.

Er, I'm a dummy and really failing at looking through the files section, just spotted them
